Spore: General / Re: Spore + Robot Chicken = ???

I just hope they don't hold back (or aren't held back by EA.)  Robot Chicken has to take Spore to the extreme.

By extreme I mean penis monsters... BUT BETTER.

Galactus wangs?

Spore: General / Spore + Robot Chicken = ???
« on: May 11, 2009, 12:15:27 pm »

I have no clue what this is about but, knowing that Robot Chicken is involved, I can guarantee it will be CLASSIC! (Classic in sing-songy d-bag voice)

Warning: Hatred for Robot Chicken, Adult Swim, Spore, Tie-ins, Marketing, Money, and/or Puppies will follow this post.  You have been warned.

Spore as an adventure game?

Isn't that what Spore Adventures is trying to accomplish?

I think the target audience is lost with Spore. You get people who want gameplay and ones who want creative freedom.

But I want both!  Even with GA mixing things up, it doesn't really seem to do what I hoped Spore would do in the first place--what no game has ever done for me.  I am still looking for that game that gives me total creative power but works with AND AGAINST that creativity to give me a challenge and a unique story.  The gameplay in Spore is weak (except Cell stage.  That RULES.) but the creativity is strong and only grows stronger as the creators get more inventive.  Even GA doesn't seem to utilize that creativity much beyond giving players a wide choice of icons that don't act much differently than any other.

I just wonder if the Sims 3 will use Spore content in some way.

I would love to see that.  I'd like to see some sort of free program that could take Spore PNGs and re-render the contents as a plain mesh with a pattern that could then be ported into Sims 3 or other games for use.  In Sims 3 you could have statues or dolls/action figures.

As for stand-alone Spore games, I am curious about Creature Keeper as the intimate nature of the game may really satisfy some non-gamers and even gamers who really like their creatures and want to interact with them rather than indirectly as them.  However, what I'm really looking forward to is a Spore racing game.  That might be possible in Galactic Adventures so I'm looking forward to that.

I'm just excited to see what people will do with it.  Maxis didn't make a very good game with Spore but they did present us with very excellent tools.  I think it was Mike Krahliuk (aka Gabe) on Penny Arcade who said Spore looked less like a game and more like something to make a game with.  Seems Maxis is taking that to heart.  I know I should get excited but... I'm excited again!

I'm never hyping for a game again.

I learned that lesson with Black and White.

I should have learned that lesson, but...  Anyway, Spore is still better than that dreck.  And yet Fable 2 seems to be a real knockout.  Fourth time's a charm I guess.

I'm not sure it will really "fix" the game but in The Sims it's usually the first and/or second Sims EP that completes that game so I'm looking forward to this.  I hope Circuit City stays in business long enough for me to use the gift card I got for Pre-ordering Spore.  If it does then I will enjoy the low-low price!

Good EP or not, I'm really looking forwards to extra parts.  The game stuff is just there to justify the price.

The game seems to be fine now but I don't know what I did right or wrong.  I'll let you all know if it acts up again.

Spore: General / Spore suddenly corrupted?
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:34:32 pm »
Maybe not corrupted but something's wrong.  I haven't installed the last patch (it won't work but I'm not concerned) and I don't have any mods, but suddenly, just as I'm heavilly using Spore again, the game is acting oddly.

First, my creations have blurry pictures on Sporepedia.  Just today I've found that my trick of raising all the graphics levels to max before saving a creation suddenly won't work.  The pictures of my creations look WORSE than they do at base levels.

Second, the copyright notice won't go away from the bottom of the screen.  Especially during the actual game this is upsetting because the graphic disables any buttons it appears over, thus making the game very hard to play.

Does anyone know why this is happening or what I should do?  I have no plans on reinstalling the game unless absolutely necessary.

Spore: General / War: What's the best way to do it?
« on: December 26, 2008, 04:27:25 pm »
I used to hate space stage but now I'm enjoying it after starting up a brand new space game with some new rules for myself:

1. Do ALL of the "training" missions first.
2. Always have 100,000 spore-money-thingies in my account.

However, I've broken both rules.  I'm not worried about the 100K thing as I now have enough colonies to recoup the costs (Another tip: Don't even bother settling on T0 planets.  I find T1s, hopefully with animals, and I get money from the get go.)  The training missions are a different story.

I think the last training mission before the story really begins is the "war" mission.  Aside from hating war in general, be it imaginary or real, I find the war parts really hard to play.  Wonky controls aside, I'm playing on a just-below-minimum-specs computer that really has trouble processing the action.  I often find myself getting blow-up without being able to do anything about it.  After trying one war I decided to ditch the mission and let my assets build.  I've got some decent colonies now and I can easily earn $500,000+ without leaving my empire.  I also have two sidekick ships but they often get blown up before I can heal them, even when my computer can process the battle correctly.  All of this is on Easy mode in which Space Game is supposed to be a breeze.

So here's my question: What strategies should I take to finally finish my war mission?  Is there a weapon I should grab first?  Or should I just upgrade everything and keep trying the mission until I beat it?  In my other space games I know that war can really open a nasty can of worms so I'd like to not only beat the war mission but also make sure I can wipe out the entire enemy empire before they know what's coming.

Spore: General / Re: "Creation Culling" on Sporepedia
« on: December 26, 2008, 04:13:02 pm »
No no no!  And not to the culling but to the WHINING!!!  This is a perfectly fine procedure and I say let it go forward.  There are so many safety checks on this that nothing popular will be gotten rid of, just stuff that everyone, EVERYONE ignored.  Read what Maxis said, people.  While a handful of forgotten gems might get lost, someone will re-upload them if they're good enough.  Stop complaining over nothing.  They need to make room for new objects, not old stuff that no one liked!

Spore: General / Re: SPORE Creature Sculptor (Action Figures)
« on: December 23, 2008, 04:29:12 pm »
I had actually expected the price to be in the 100 - 120 dollar range.  As promising as the technology is... it is still quite rare.  Couldn't even buy one from Futureshop or best buy if I wanted to and had the money.

You said it before me.  I think $50 is a steal.  Will I be getting one?  Not yet.  I don't have too many creatures I like enough for a sculpture and I might wait to see if the price goes down but I'm just really excited that now it's available.  We were told we could get figurines and, sure enough, now we can!

However, that idea of plush toys?  That's the next level.  You know that would be super expensive but it would be so cool to have a stuffed puppeteer.

My only issues with C&C and with the idea of stuff packs in general is that publishers charge too much for too little.  New parts?  That's great, but they don't enhance the game for me.  All I see is new graphics and that does nothing to fix Spore's many problems.  However, I see no reason for other people to not buy it--except that poor sales of SPs will force EA to lower the prices to a reasonable level.  While this might seem like complaining--okay, so I am complaining--I can't begrudge anyone to not have fun.  It's your money and you see the value in your purchase so more power to you.  I love seeing what people do with the parts and I just hope I can find C&C at a decent price.  Either that or I'll wait for the first true expansion pack, hopefully in March '09.

While Spore itself doesn't work so well as a game, I keep coming back because of things like this.  Where Spore shines is in how the developers are always finding new things to implement in games that haven't really been utilized in this industry.  I hope developers don't ignore the other advancements of Spore just because of less-than-expected sales or the DRM mess.

Spore: General / Re: The Valid Suggestion Thread For Maxis
« on: December 18, 2008, 09:26:36 am »
All I want right now is a way to block C&C creatures from downloading.  I don't have the SP, I don't want it (unless I can get it for a sensible price) and I don't like that stuff clogging my game downloads.  I can't install the latest patch either--I think it was corrupted somehow--so I'd like to block those leg parts too until I can get the patch issues resolved.

I'd also like to use the Sporepedia and have those things blocked.  While I understand EA wanting to push their product, some of us will be happy with plain Spore for a while.  There are going to be quite a few players that won't get any expansion packs but will still play the game without them.  They should be able to find things that they like and not have to deal with a big collection of stuff they can't use.  That's just a waste of disk space.
