PC Games / Re: EverQuest II Anyone?
« on: July 26, 2006, 01:19:13 pm »
I'm on a break from MMOs for a couple month to live life ;D, but I'll soon be picking up an EQ2 account. My guildmates started trying out the changes about a month ago and they've almost univerally praised the game's direction, so I'm going to hop in with them and check it out.

I can't help but notice that there don't seem to be any tentacles in the creature editor demo.  For that matter, there's nothing that would be obviously appropriate for a wholly aquatic species, either.
At the bottom of the editor menu there's an corkscrew-shaped icon, which may be tentacles/flagia. Also, the arrow-shaped icon directly beneath "feet" would appear to be "fins."

Anyone else start dry-humping their monitor while watching the editor in the IGN vid?  :o

I get this creeping feelign that E3 Won't answer all our questions:Tthat becuase they've decided to push back, EA's keeping the lid on Spore until fall/next year and we'll ultimately get about as much out of E3 as we did GDC. >:(

PC Games / Re: New Command And Conquer announced!

I have great memories of both series and can't wait. I don't think they were overrated, to be honest.

Side note: anyone remember Emperor: Battle for Dune? Great game...
Yeah, I found Emperor on Gnutella awhile back and had lots of fun with it, shame it never really went anywhere.

I look at CnC3 this way: they're givign themselves room to work with. If they were to come out with RA3 and it sucked, the series would be forever damned in the hearts of its fans. RA2 is so revered noone would ever forgive a screwup, but CnC's faded enough in most peoples minds (thanks to that piece of dren, Renegade) that if 3 comes out badly most people will just laugh it off and start "we want RA3" threads. On the other tentacle, if CnC3's a good hit that gives new life to the CnC RTS franchise, people's expectactions for RA3 will go to Warcraft-level hype.

Or you could try to make your ufo look like Lexx. Supposed to be like a giant dragonfly, it's organic, and it looks quite a bit like..erm, something else:
Funny how flipping an image over so easily changes perception. ;D

Spore: Creation Corner / Warjen Commerce Tower
« on: March 27, 2006, 10:54:59 am »
I decided to be different, instead of showing my creature idea(s) first I thought I'd start with some buildings and such. My apologies for the tiny Paint image, but my scanner bit the big one recently. The top image is a top-down image of the tower, the bottom is side-on.

The Warjen evolved from tool-using tree-dwellers, who relied on the Tree's height to protect their homes, and used hollows in the trunks to hide supplies from the many ground-dwelling predators that abound on their world. As a result, throughout their history the Warjen have preferred to construct their buildings on large pillars or bases which elevate them from the ground. While technology has progressed these structures' height and security has become more dramatic, culminating in designs such as the Commerce tower.

The most striking feature of the Commerce tower is it's base. Taking up fully half it's 1000 Sl height, the base is completely sealed by a polished metal casing which makes accessing the interior from ground-level or climbing the walls all but impossible. There are no portals in the base's lower surface, only the 2 vent areas on the upper rim and the top of the tower are open. Inside the base are the computer server rooms, vaults, generators, and other sensitive equipment used by the merchants who own the tower.

At the top of the base is the Park, a secure greenspace. Most Commerce towers have uniquely landscapped parks, to set them off from the rest: in this example a flat, featureless grassland represents that area. The park also features the Tower's Pad, a platform for the VTOL aircraft used for commuting to land/take-off from. It can also accommodate the Commercial Dirigibles used to transport cargo or large numbers of commuters, though only one at a time. Directly underneath is the garage which can accommodate employee and guest vehicles up to a maximum of 400.

Rising above the Park are the sub-towers used by the merchants as office and meeting spaces. Like the Park, each of Commerce Tower has a unique subtower configuration, though Federal Law mandates that they all feature the finned electromagnetic air filters on the highest tower to offset pollution.

Many similar designs exist to the Commerce Tower and can be seen in most Warjen Cities. Residence towers often forsake most of the parkland for more sub-tower apartment space. Industrial towers usually have multiple pads and few or no towers, as the security of the Base is preferred for valuable resources. Ironically the real security of Modern Towers may only be skin deep, as for the past 300 years most if not all Towers are tied into subterranean sewer and utility networks.

Lol, Go easy on the Multiplayer thumbscrews, man. 2 generations of Sims games have done fine without conventional multiplayer, and considering all the groundbreaking work the Spore team is already doing I can't fault them for leaving Multiplayer off the table for now.

Don't worry too much about people not noticing the loss of the actual "game thoughts" section, Steve. Your insights from the rest of the show, game news in particular, and the side rants you trow in when a topic gets you going, provide pretty much the same info in a more dynamic format. People didn't mention it becuase there wasn't anything, other than the title, missing.

General Discussion
News + Rumors

A creature-only forum might work now but as we get closer to release I believe more people will talk about their UFOs, buildings, planets, etc etc. Getting all "creations" sepereate from the other two topics would be nice. This would be a great place for art and backstories.

General discussion would be mostly the "QA/FAQs" forum now. Later it would transition to general talk about the game's mechanics, play, and other stuff not under the other two topics.

News + Rumors would obviously be more Rumors these days, but as these are confirmed/denied by real news it would be better to have them in the same forum as the news releases rather than try and cross-polinate.
