Question about starting planet (potential minor spoilers)
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:59:17 am »
I'm expecting the game tomorrow though, but I am wondering about something. Does anybody know if it is possible to start on a planet that is also the moon of a gas giant? Those moons of gas giants in other pics look about as big as normal planets, so the possibility is there.

What I'm asking is if anybody knows whether this can happen.

Darn, it would be damn cool though. At least we can colonize those moons.

You always start in a generic star system which has a couple of planets, a moon, and a gas giant. You start on a T3 planet, otherwise you could run into a dead end at the Civ stage (not enough spice; T-score not high enough to support proper cities; etc).

Not really, in theory they could have moons that are T3. And a moon of a gas giant could be the same size as a terrestrial planet

all the starting systems are sort of scripted

you have your home planet...with a moon...another t2 planet with no spice

and then some other planets

this all has a reason that i wont spoil

Your planet also needs to meet certain terrain criteria. There needs to be enough contiguous land to support decent civilisations.

I'm sure such things can and will be modded in the future, though. I mean, within reason, obviously.

What I'd love to see is a "no storyline" mod, which not only removes all the nonsense quests you get for the overall plot, but would also allow you to choose/specify the type of planet you begin with.

I was a little disappointed by not "selecting" my homeplanet, but now getting deeper into it and seeing why they set it up the way they do is awesome.

Plus I've had starting systems with gas giant moons, just not started on that planet.  You can't always get what you want.... <insert harmonious vocals here>

Sometimes those gas giants are so big in your sky, I guess you could pretend that it was the moon of a gas giant. I don't have any problems with the no possibility of that as I was just curious about the whole thing.
