Spore: General / Re: Today is the Day!

If you're to believe everything you read / hear then it would seem that Spore won't be out until the end of tis year or even next year (2009!).

This seems to be the norm though for games these days or maybe just the ones I follow. I'm sure when I first heard of Spore it was slated for an end of 2006 release!

Actually, i've just checked the FAQ I started at the top of the forum and it was indeed slated for fall of 2006. Still it's easy to see how a company can underestimate by 18 months to 2 years (potentially), the same happened to SWG and is currently happpening to AoC / Warhammer.

Still it means more time to get it right I guess.

Wow, Spore, been years (literally) since I looked at this. Just turned on an old laptop and this site was in my favourites, what were the chances of me popping in on an important day.

I see my FAQ is still there, it must be well out of date by now ;-)

Ah well good luck with the announcement. So many things have come along to drag me away recently, been waiting for AoC and dabbling about getting into MetaPlace. I'm sure Spore would still be cool though.

Hello to anyone who may remember me.

Spore: General / Re: Will our board be flooded with n00bs?
« on: May 14, 2006, 01:05:57 am »
The whole thread makes no sense (oooh a double negative), as there are always n00bs joining and this is a good thing because if there wasn't this community would die a horrible death. Remember, we were all n00bs once. Besides the more people that come here the more exposure to Spore we get (though I can't think of much more better we can get then having Will on board and posting).

And you know this because you are working on Spore?

My guess is that is not true but I am willing to accept I am wrong ;)

I know next to nothing about programming and software development but I do know enough from experience that there is nothing stopping them from releasing a demo / editor or what ever you want to call it which has limited functionality. Lots of games have had cut down versions / demos released that gave you a taste without giving too much away and I am sure they can do the same with Spore.

Spore: General / Re: Regarding the Release Date

It's things like this that make me wish games weren't announced until they were in playtesting.  I KNOW that this game will be worth it but there isn't much else out there that gets me excited.  A new Zelda doesn't come along every day and I can't afford to buy a 360 for Obliviion (and wouldn't buy one if I could.  :P)

Why can't you buy Oblivion for your PC?

My guess is it's old but if you are willing to make some sacrafices on graphics then it will run quite happily on an older rig. My PC is an Athalon 2 Ghz, 1 Gig ram and a ATI 9800 128 ram video card and it runs fine for me.

What about everyone else, don't they deserve a hello too?  ;)

I am sure there will be a sudden increase of activity now from people (including me) who have been hidden away just lurking and a lot of new members but let's remember (this isn't directed at you personally aquaman, infact it's now even related to the topic but I thought I'd throw it in here) that Will is a busy man and own't be able to answer every question so don't get upset if he doesn't.

Now if he could just answer every question in the questions for the devs thread that would be great  ;D

(Guess I better tidy it up at some point, it has been a while.)

Oh and hello everyone.

It is true that this has been discussed a million times (well at least twice) but let's face it since this forum has been around for what over a year now and we've only had really the same info to discuss then these things are going to happen. I expect in reality every thread has been repeated in one way or another over the past year but unless new posts are made then this board would die a horrible death.

New info is starting to trickle out now so hopefully it won't be long before there is a lot more to talk about.

As for the topic, I believe that there may well be some sort of censorship in place on creatures that get uploaded autmoatically thus meaning that although you will be able to create what you want, it won't end up on other people's planets via a download though you may be able to manully send stuff to friends.

How it gets censored though I have no idea because we could be potentially talking about thousands and thousands of creatures.

Not sure why anyone thought it might be out this year, it's always been on the cards for next year, most likely around fall.

Any new info is great though.

Bah should have seen that this was dug up from the past before reading the article and trying to work out how a May issue was considered new.

Spore: General / Re: What game(s) are you playing while waiting for Spore?
« on: September 19, 2005, 11:35:48 pm »
Ultima Online.

It's old but still beats the other MORPG's out there for playability habds down. I've tried EQ, EQ 2, SWG and AC2 but none of them lasted.

Korean man dies after 50 hours of computer games

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing on-line battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

Books / Re: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince!

I bought the book at midnight where I live though I hadn't actually gone out specifically to buy it. I was out drinking with some friends and got really drunk and whilst walking home saw a huge queue (about 100 people) outside a local bookshop so thought it would be a good idea to join it (as you do when drunk).

Luckily whilst I was waiting they opened up the shutters to inside the shopping centre and I found another book shop inside without a queue so didn't have to wait like most of the others ;-)

Spore: General / Re: E-mail to Wright
« on: July 19, 2005, 11:30:16 am »
Sorry for all the new topics by the community n00b13t, but i thought this was a good one. I sent this e-mail with some of the more "pressing" details of the game to Will Wright, I thought you guys might have some fun with it until (if) he replies. I'll share his response in this thread when (if) he does. I know number 11 is very, very far fetched, but it's worth a shot. Hell, I'd practically give my soul for ten minutes with that thing.

I know you must get a lot of email about Spore, and if you answer these questions, I will share them with the community at gamingsteve.com. I will be completely contented if you even reply to anything in this email, so feel free answer any questions you want in as many or as few words as you want, if you choose to even read it.

1) Will there be infantry in the tribal or city stages of the game, or are you limited to war when you reach civilization?

What do you mean by infantry? We know for a fact that for example you have foot soldiers at the tribal stage. As you advance you get better buildings and vehicles.

2) Once you get to the tribal phase of the game, will you still be able to evolve your species?

In a way yes, I believe that you could pick up one of your own species with your UFO and use the UFO tools to evolve it......or not.

3) A question about the abruptness of evolution... If I start out with a creature that looks like a koala bear, can I make a creature that looks like a whale by the next generation, or is it more of a realistic, gradual process?

The video suggests that you can make major changes however there are a set number of steps so it's gradual to a degree however you can make big changes in a short time. I would have thought though that you can't go from land to water but only the other way.

4) I believe I heard somewhere that as you evolve your creature, the planet will form to it. For example, if I make a land creature, there will be a lot of land on my home world, whereas if I make a water creature, there will be much more water.

This isn't really a question, what are you asking? We know that creatures that are downloaded are picked from a database that matches them to the planet you are on so that you don't get water based creatures purely on a land based planet.

5) Is the Maxis team aiming for a teen rated game? If so, how much are would the team be willing to sacrifice (take out, change from original, etc) to keep it on that course?

6) No offence, but is this going to be a game "designed" for expansion packs?

I think it goes without saying that there will be expansion packs, I believe this has already been addresses in the FAQ.

7) The demo looked all but finished, what aspects of this game are going to take the extra year+ that the current release period calls for?

Not sure if I understand this question, Star Wars Galaxies had a playable demo of it's game 2 years before it's released and even a part of the Space game 3 and a half years before it's released. Although a game may look complete there is a lot of fine tuning before it's in a saleale condition.

8) Will there be any amphibious creatures or vehicles? Will the UFO be able to move underwater?

The first part is answered in the FAQ, the second part is most likely no based on the answer to the first part.

9) What is the Maxis staff going to do about having inappropriate characters or tons and tons of basically the same characters (as it almost certainly will be with familiar creatures, like pokemon or humans)?

I expect the first part will be moderated but as for the second part based on what Will has said they won't do anything as the chance of having identical creatures are pretty remote but having similar ones there is nothing wrong with.

10) How complex will the civilizations get? Will there be leaders, government, corruption, trends, etc?

11) Please, kind sir, please. Would you release a beta phase of the creature editor to the public? Maybe just to me? I'll surely be unable to concentrate on anything until I am able to experience this incredible stroke of genius.

(unless they can attack your city or something)

Although there is only one sentient species there can be multiple tribes / cities of your spcies that will want to attack / trade with you on your own planet.

My feeling is that you have to conquer your own planet first before you venture into space, either thourgh trade / war or other means.
