I mean I guess it's easier for me to say just don't go, because in Finland we don't celebrate Thanksgiving.

I mean soon it's Christmas anyway. You'll see your folks then... And I don't really get the importance of certain dates anyway. Once we pushed back celebrating Christmas for a week because it was more convenient. Who decided the exact day was so important? It's all a social construct, and holds no inherent significance.

That said, I've usually travelled by bus or train to see my family. My sister lives literally on the opposite side of Finland, so she often takes the airplane if she comes down here. I've driven to old hometown two times, it was a 4 or 6 hour drive I think? Can't say it was wholly enjoyable. I spent a lot of the time obsessing over speed limit cameras.

Dunno if those are options for you, and of course USA is a pretty big country. But I sure wouldn't want to drive there even if I had slept...

I actually enjoy the hours-long drive, it's fun. But only if I'm in good enough shape. Nah the main issue is that I usually only get to see Mom once or twice a year, one of those times being Thanksgiving. We both look forward to it and are both upset when I can't make it. Thankfully this year I was able to be up there just a month ago to see everyone, so it's less bad.

here's my relatively very minor gripe: i don't really have a cold but for the last two weeks my throat has been so clogged up i feel like i'm suffocating whenever i sit down, and i have to ration out my throat-clearing so people nearby don't look at me weird

thought i was getting my first ever big boy paycheck today, it being the last friday of the month. other people working there told me it'd be today.

spent all day checking my balance. no money. i had plans! i had plans for that sweet cash. now i'm stuck with my -€0.16 until at least monday.

Oh yeah that's 100% standard. Just be glad they don;t give you a literal cheque you have to cash.

Usually your first payroll check is delayed sometimes due to admin stuff

Yeah it could even be rolled into your next paycheck tbh, I'd ask about the system if you're relying on the money sometime soon
