I mean I guess it's easier for me to say just don't go, because in Finland we don't celebrate Thanksgiving.
I mean soon it's Christmas anyway. You'll see your folks then... And I don't really get the importance of certain dates anyway. Once we pushed back celebrating Christmas for a week because it was more convenient. Who decided the exact day was so important? It's all a social construct, and holds no inherent significance.
That said, I've usually travelled by bus or train to see my family. My sister lives literally on the opposite side of Finland, so she often takes the airplane if she comes down here. I've driven to old hometown two times, it was a 4 or 6 hour drive I think? Can't say it was wholly enjoyable. I spent a lot of the time obsessing over speed limit cameras.
Dunno if those are options for you, and of course USA is a pretty big country. But I sure wouldn't want to drive there even if I had slept...
