Spore: General / Re: Spore -- Creating The Ultimate Species?

there probably is no cap on the size of the creature, rather a point limit.  and if you use all your points to make it really big you might not have enough left to put some arms or legs on.  it's possible but then again, steve did mention how Will had creatures with dozens of legs and beaks, etc.  although he was using cheats...

Console Games / Re: GAMECUBE SUCKS
« on: March 19, 2005, 12:21:55 am »
how come xbox and gamecube both have refernces to rectangles in their names...very original.  and the only reason i think gamecube isn't as popular is because it releases the SAME games for every one of its systems.  it's either mario, pokemon, kirby, zelda, metroid, sonic, etc.  there probably are some awesome titles for it but it just seems like a "kiddie" console compared to all the adult-themed games out for other consoles.

and i have to say the best system has to be the playstation 2.  it's not a huge CUBE or BOX especially since they released the new slim version (my pride and joy).  i like it alot because it has backwards compatibility with my ps1 games (and ps1 was the first console game out so i have quite a few games for it).  who knows, maybe if gamecube could play some of my sega or nes games i would buy it.  you can connect online quick, easy, and for free (you don't have to subscribe a service like xbox).  and the controls are awesome, most of the games on the n64 only used about 2-4 buttons and the controllers had about 9+ buttons on them.  and again, it just has most of the popular titles on it.

disease (if it's even a part of the game at all) won't be introduced when you're an organism or even in the tribal stages.  if you look back on human history, diseases evolve with technology.

it's legal if you own the game, the same goes for music and movies.

yeah but that completely ruins the surprise of finding an alien race on another planet.  you would already know what is looks like...unless you mean downloading custom creatures on fan pages like custom creates in Black & White?

That said however you could create an aggressive race bent on destruction and get friends (or strangers) to download them into their worlds to see how their civilisations handle your race invading.

I don't think they will let you choose which creatures you can download...from the sounds of it, the program loads creatures at random.

And since the game apparently moves at your own pace, you could just stop playing and go online to challengs someone to an RTS-like battle online once you've created a city.  The game would have to check that both players are at the same level though.

Podcasts / Resident Evil 4
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:44:37 pm »
Steve,

In your review of Resident Evil 4 you mentioned that the cut-scenes would sometimes have action in them requiring you to stay alert or something dangerous could happen to you.  You said this was the first time this has been done in gaming but doesn't Dino Crisis on the PS1 have the same thing?

Other than that your review was impressive and I never realized that the gamecube had some of the best games available on it, and after listening to your podcast it made me want to go out and get a gamecube and a few games.  If only I could afford it  :-\.

These aren't really questions about the game, rather some ideas about certain aspects of the game.

Breeding
Someone asked before if it's possible to mate 2 creatures to create a third species.  I'm sure if that was a feature in the game it would have been emphasized in the demo like all of the other major aspects.  But think about it: if a human mates with an animal it doesn't create a third species...that would be like skipping thousands of years of evolution.  And if they do have some cross-breeding feature in the game how would you go about executing it?  The larger creatures just want to eat you, and if you somehow manage to breed with a weaker creature you just get an overall weaker creature in return.  I just don't see any benefits in this.

Gameplay Speed
I was wondering, since there are other competing species on the planet, can they evolve quicker than you if you take too long?  What I mean is, If you spend large amounts of time editing your creature, and just goofing off, is it possible that the other species colony could become highly advanced and destroy you before you have a chance?  Or do you think the other species will evolve at the same rate you play...

Space Travel
This sounds really cool in theory but I'm not really convinced by the screenshots.  Will the player be able to fully control the UFO and just free-roam?  Or will you simply click on a planet to visit and the UFO flies there by itself?  Another cool concept would be having space wars with several planets (I can still dream  :-\).

Oh yeah and you think the architechture or your city/vehicles will influence the design of your UFO?  Or can you custom edit the UFO as well...  We could have cube shaped UFO's like the Borg  ;).  Just too bad we wouldn't be able to assimilate other creatures, although that would certainly make for a great expension pack- assuming they don't actually use the phrase "assimilate" or "borg" to avoid copyright infringements...

Aquatics
Somebody asked (on the podcast I believe) if you can keep your creatures amphibious throughout the whole game...Well I was thinking about this alot and I noticed Steve mentioned in his podcast that all of Will's creatures had legs, but the render of various creatures on the front page shows a shark-type creature...And remember how you can build cities underwater via bubble?  What if you can have amphibious creatures that live underwater in bubbled cities like the Gungan species of Star Wars?  And regarding space travel, does anyone else remember that the Xindi Aquatics (Star Trek) were amphibious creatures but still flew around in spaceships?  These are all really wild ideas but interesting.

Humans & Reproducing
I wonder how the game's engine will handle humanoid creatures.  Think they'll be pretty accurate, like have our general speed and dexterity?  I was planning on making some human-like creatures at first but then I realized the color engine would probaby make them look wild, not to mention how creepy it would be to see two humans with no private parts humping each other.  I guess the creatures in this game don't actually have sex though, since that would involve desiging both a female and male creature, or at least designating an organ for reproduction....

I thought the movie was awesome even though it had an R rating (was that one curse word worth it?), plus alot of stuff on TV pokes fun at religion (Simpsons, MadTV, Buffy/Angel, and that's just public TV) so who cares about sacriligious jibberish.
