Everything Else / Forum Modifications Proposal
« on: May 14, 2005, 10:27:30 am »
Steve, If you are listening...

OK this is a video game forum, so why do we have STARS to show our posting experience, wouldn't it make everyone here alot more comfortable to have an EXP Bar? The stars are nice but an EXP Bar would be cool. With or without the stars.

Experience Bar MOD:

While discussing some games or movies, it's hard to say much without giving alot of stuff away. I know people can just a;ert the reader of spoilers but what about pictures? If only there was some way to hide content to those who choose not to view it...

Spoiler Alert BBCode MOD:

I thought these were cool novelty MODs that would help improve and personify the forums to make it more than just Default, like alot of other forums. Anyone else have any ideas for mods that could improve these forums?

Oh yeah I know there is supposed to be a spell check function when you post but I can't find it anywhere?

Console Games / HD Era MISTAKES (XBox 360)
« on: May 14, 2005, 10:15:40 am »
Have you seen J Allard's keynote?

Here is one of his slides comparing the 3D Era to the HD Era of gaming:

3D Era:
  • Online as novelty
  • Mass entertainment
  • Wired
  • Multiplayer
  • On the disc
  • Commicates consume
HD Era:
  • Online as necessity
  • Personal entertainment
  • Wireless
  • Multiplatform
  • On the disc and on demand
  • Commicates create

Now there are a few conflicts about can XBox achieve "Personal entertainment" by having a player connect online and playing with hundreds of people? Online gaming is becoming standard for gaming which is nice, but that excludes players who can't afford or don't have a broadband connection to the internet...and that discourages new consumers. XBox is also making the mistake by having all games HD because that forces people to upgrade their entertainment systems. This limits their system to an even smaller number of consumers because people will wonder "Why should I bother spending $300 on this system that I need to pay about $35 per month to play it's games which are all supposed to be online, and a few more thousand to buy a new TV?"

Anothing thing about online entertainment more games are made in the future people stop playing the older games, so if games MUST be online compatible there may not be anyone to play with if you buy an old copy a few years after it's release.

I like offline single player titles because you don't need to rely on anybody to complete the game, and lag is not a factor.  Online should REMAIN a novelty.

If you create teams while you're playing MAdden for example al Microsoft claims is possible with the new XBox Live system, how can you be guarenteed the same people will be online when you need them? And even with current online games you need to compare countless rooms to see which one has the lowest ping, right amount of players, etc.  Also this is all very demanding for game they have to be able to make a great STORY with sophisticated GRAPHICS, all with ONLINE CAPABILITY. I don't think so!

All of this not only discourages new consumers but also discourages promising new 3rd party developers!

Edit: Added table for the lists

I wonder what religion most gamers are? I'm a devoted atheist! How about you?

Console Games / Ratchet: Deadlocked
« on: April 15, 2005, 10:32:43 am »
The video previews of this game are awesome.  This looks like a big improvement over UYA which in my opinion wasn't as good as GC.  The great thing about this series is the originality, innovation, and thoughtfullness put into each game.   Looking forward to this.

Look at this review: (11-12th paragraph), they actually said Auto Con instead of Otacon (MGS)  :)

Podcasts / Resident Evil 4
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:44:37 pm »

In your review of Resident Evil 4 you mentioned that the cut-scenes would sometimes have action in them requiring you to stay alert or something dangerous could happen to you.  You said this was the first time this has been done in gaming but doesn't Dino Crisis on the PS1 have the same thing?

Other than that your review was impressive and I never realized that the gamecube had some of the best games available on it, and after listening to your podcast it made me want to go out and get a gamecube and a few games.  If only I could afford it  :-\.

Spore: General / Insight
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:38:15 pm »
These aren't really questions about the game, rather some ideas about certain aspects of the game.

Someone asked before if it's possible to mate 2 creatures to create a third species.  I'm sure if that was a feature in the game it would have been emphasized in the demo like all of the other major aspects.  But think about it: if a human mates with an animal it doesn't create a third species...that would be like skipping thousands of years of evolution.  And if they do have some cross-breeding feature in the game how would you go about executing it?  The larger creatures just want to eat you, and if you somehow manage to breed with a weaker creature you just get an overall weaker creature in return.  I just don't see any benefits in this.

Gameplay Speed
I was wondering, since there are other competing species on the planet, can they evolve quicker than you if you take too long?  What I mean is, If you spend large amounts of time editing your creature, and just goofing off, is it possible that the other species colony could become highly advanced and destroy you before you have a chance?  Or do you think the other species will evolve at the same rate you play...

Space Travel
This sounds really cool in theory but I'm not really convinced by the screenshots.  Will the player be able to fully control the UFO and just free-roam?  Or will you simply click on a planet to visit and the UFO flies there by itself?  Another cool concept would be having space wars with several planets (I can still dream  :-\).

Oh yeah and you think the architechture or your city/vehicles will influence the design of your UFO?  Or can you custom edit the UFO as well...  We could have cube shaped UFO's like the Borg  ;).  Just too bad we wouldn't be able to assimilate other creatures, although that would certainly make for a great expension pack- assuming they don't actually use the phrase "assimilate" or "borg" to avoid copyright infringements...

Somebody asked (on the podcast I believe) if you can keep your creatures amphibious throughout the whole game...Well I was thinking about this alot and I noticed Steve mentioned in his podcast that all of Will's creatures had legs, but the render of various creatures on the front page shows a shark-type creature...And remember how you can build cities underwater via bubble?  What if you can have amphibious creatures that live underwater in bubbled cities like the Gungan species of Star Wars?  And regarding space travel, does anyone else remember that the Xindi Aquatics (Star Trek) were amphibious creatures but still flew around in spaceships?  These are all really wild ideas but interesting.

Humans & Reproducing
I wonder how the game's engine will handle humanoid creatures.  Think they'll be pretty accurate, like have our general speed and dexterity?  I was planning on making some human-like creatures at first but then I realized the color engine would probaby make them look wild, not to mention how creepy it would be to see two humans with no private parts humping each other.  I guess the creatures in this game don't actually have sex though, since that would involve desiging both a female and male creature, or at least designating an organ for reproduction....
