Title: [RG] The Pentekonterus
Post by: Gnoll on November 11, 2009, 09:55:56 am
These creatures live on the forested planet of Kuuruk. They can easily be recongnized as the heaviest creature on that planet. There are other features of their system that you should know.

EDIT: Merged with Kosmosis thread. http://www.kosmosis.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fauna&action=display&thread=25&page=4

Star: Kaivik
Star Type: Class-M Yellow star in early stages of life.
Planet #1: Kuuruk: You may find it strange, but this is the home planet of the Pentekonterus and surrounding species.
Planet #2: Kiivck: A ball of ice rich in minerals, it could be considered a wasteland, but for the foreign mining station. Nobody knows who placed it there.

Size: 11,347km in diameter
Average Temperature: Mild
Liquid: The liquid water is within the central ocean and the newly formed eastern sea, the southeastern swamps, and several large lakes in the north.
Average Terrain: Forest, with occasional plains, swamps, and one ocean separating the two main continents. This was formed during a recent volcanic disturbance.
Density: It has an average-density atmosphere.
Composition: This atmosphere consists of 15% argon, 35% oxygen, 45% nitrogen, and 5% trace gases..
Geological Conditions: The supercontinent has split into two, seperated by the old ocean and a small sea in the east.It has a liquid iron outer core and a solid nickel inner core due to fusion with a nickel-based protoplanet during formation.

Main Species: There was once a sapient species on this planet, but all that is left are the ruins of tents. Also, the Pentekonterus.
Native Animals: Pentekonterus, several prey species and competing predators.
Imported Animals: None
Native Plants: Swamp trees, deciduous broad-leafed trees, and aquatic flowering plants.
Imported Plants: None

Structures: Ruins of small villages, a monolith left by Zorikanian xenobiology ships, 3 nations worth of cities.
% Urban:  3 (the remaining ruins)
Spaceports: Yes
Imports: Nothing
Exports: Nothing

Other notes: This planet is ripe for colonization.

Notes on the Pentekonterus:
Size: 15' long, 4' tall
Armor and weapons: Clubbed tail, claws, powerful jaws, size, physical strength.
Personality: Feirce towards less intelligent species, but fear those more intelligent than themselves and will act gently to avoid conflict. This is part of their social order, with the alpha male or female being the smartest, not the strongest, individual.
Colors: Red scales with yellow markings all over their backs in no particular pattern.
Special powers: SEE SECOND PAGE
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/gec05/CAS%20Icon%20Gallery/SCC_geoambler.gif)
These creatures are purely terrestrial.
SPACE STAGE, YEAH!!!
Other notes: Their main prey lives in the forests, with other prey items inhabiting the swamps. They tend to shy away from the central ocean. They have had contact with scouting droids before, and gained their fear of those more intelligent after unsuccessful attacks.

Some extra biology info:
Diet: Carnivorous
Reproduction: Method Unknown
Hunt success rate: 67%
Gender Dimorphism: None
Lifespan: 50-70 Earth Years
Other: They seem to dislike wading, and cannot swim, which may be why they avoid the central ocean.

May I make a reccomendation?  Perhaps you could try filling out the creature classification outline made by Darth Grievi a while back.  It's great for helping to flesh out your creature.  As said before me, it looks like your creature has quite a bit of potential.

http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=11004.0 (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=11004.0)

That said, I am dubious about the fact that you are introducing them as still being in the creature phase.  Keep in mind that pretty much all other races in our RP galaxy are well into the space phase, so I'm not sure how you would be able to RP with the Pentekonterus at all.  Just something you may want to think about.

Would you mind telling me what kind of star is Kaivik, exactly? Because I don't think you know too much about stars or nuclear fusion. I can't think of any kind of violet-colored star. Also, you're saying that magma is released through ocean vents after being converted into gas? Magma is rock so hot it's liquefied. That's right, liquid rock. The only way you could turn it into a gas is if it was very near a star or was in some other position of unbelievably hot temperatures. Hydrothermal vents release various minerals mixed with superheated water.

This looks like it has some potential, but please do your science research next time. And don't forget to read the topics that say "Read Before Posting!"

I'VE GOT IT!!! Please, from now on, before posting, read these edits:
Kaivik will now be a Class-M Yellow star in early life.
Also, The hydrothermal vents: GONE. I;m going to have plate tectonics after all, but slower than Earth's. (just as a reference)
Finally, that wierd thing with the energy consumption of Kaivik? NIXED. I really need to stop watching so many wierd and obscure sci-fi anime.

I'm glad that you're listening to scientific reason. I would truly hate to inadvertently start a flame war, and maybe we can become good friends.

I would think that the supercontinent was formed millions of years ago by shifting tectonic plates. Earth used to have one supercontinent called Pangaea, but it split into the modern continents. No continent is permanent unless the planet is geologically inactive, and that might mean a much weaker magnetic field, which would mean increased solar radiation, which would mean an extremely low chance of life developing.

Speaking of which, how about you try and make these Pentekonterus very unusual? Like, make them really different from familiar terrestrial life in a few ways. Maybe they can see in x-rays, or eat rocks or something strange like that.

Yup, finally updated again!

Ok, so here's some of the other creatures on Kuuruk!

Ukuril:
They're the Pentekonterus' main prey, and are often seen wandering the swamps in herds. The Irriuth also eat them.

Irriuth:
They compete with the Pentekonterus for food sources such as the Ukuril, and hunt from the tops of trees using the helium sacs in their tails. The pores allow them to intake or expel helium and control their altitude.

Rawksus:
They basically serve the role of scavenger all over the planet. They will descend on Irriuth kills and basically wreak havoc on anything that stands between them and their next free meal.

??? (most commonly known as Rorthoks, but other names are used.)
These are the terrors of Kuuruk's seas, and although more lightly built than the Pentekonterus, they are one of the reasons why said terrestrial carnivores avoid the ocean at all costs.

Skurivin
(http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj310/StickBomber/Squivin.png)
These freshwater/marsh hunters do not use brute strength or swooping dives to kill their prey. Instead, they use their strange appearance as a weapon. Any animal that sees them will go into a panic, which is then aided by chemicals that the Skurivin shoot from their spitters. The prey will effectively be scared to death, as the chemical stops the heart soon after it is used.

Of course you mean a poll RP, right? And by the way, this is a pretty big project for you. I mean, you'll be needing to do some serious researching on evolution, tribal life, and the works. Just look at the Ropidians! Now that's what I call a good RP. Good luck to you, monsieur.

You wanted evolution, you got it!
This is the Perteron. It's one of the Pentekonterus' earliest ancestors, just out of the sea. It came to land to get away from all those nasty fish-things that are now extinct, but replaced with equally nasty OTHER fish-things. And crocodile-things. Anyway, so the Perteron evolved a little chemical-shooter on its head to break down the tough plants it ate before biting down. Later, the chemical would go into the teeth, and eventually, disappear as their stomach acids grew stronger. They found this was also useful against predators and thus became Kuuruk's first successful amphibians.

Want moar?

Weapons-grade acidic vomit? Nice! ;D

Also, yeah, it would be great if you made a summarized evolutionary line, with only major changes being shown. :)

Post by: Gnoll on December 29, 2009, 11:56:33 am
(http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj310/StickBomber/Pekronker.png)
This was the next step: The Pekronker. It ran through the grasslands and ate the leaves of low, scattered trees. Now that it was fully terrestrial, it gathered in small herds.n The chemical that broke down the tough leaves was now incorporated into its saliva, so no more acid-shooting. But now, it could hold its own against all but the absolute top predators... which could swallow it whole. So, these guys managed to do some amazing things:
-Survive an ice age
-Survive when the planet tried to superplume itself 3 times in a 17-million-year span (including the recent one, the planet has tried to self-destruct 7 times. :P)

Well, I got more animals, including some sea life, will upload soon.

EDIT:
Finally, I got some of these up here!
This is one of the repto-arthropods. ... Imagine an insect, but it's likely bulbous in places and has an otherwise reptilian look. THis one is a beachcomber, scavenging any meat it can find and fending off predators with noxious gas. Species Name: Ralius Ramidus
(http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj310/StickBomber/CRE_-09e031ca_ful.png)
This is one of the dragworms. Dragworms have wide jaws to take in organic and inorganic matter alike, powerful digestive juices, and leg-like appendages to... drag themselves across surfaces. This one is fairly large, and it lives at the bottom of the sea, taking in iron oxides from the sand. (Guess where I got that idea from.) Species Name: Balarus Namimo

EDIT AGAIN: Here we go, another dragworm.
The Blfnasp, a shallow-water dragworm, is the tallest of the phylum.

Post by: Gnoll on April 08, 2010, 06:24:54 pm
Well, then, the Pentekonterus will be moved to the RG sans any objections.

EDIT: Here's another group of creatures. On Kuuruk, arthropods, due to environmental pressures, took on many of the roles of vertabrates. For instance:
This is Zalabur raseii, an Icthyo-Arthropod. It takes on the fish's role in the biosphere.
Then there is the:
Babilla balirus, the Primate-like Arthropod. It climbs trees, crosses plains, and has a diet of fruit, nuts, small reptiles, small birds, and Squivin. It hibernates during the excessively wet Kuuruk winter.

Here comes a NATION PROFILE! I'll import the other two from Kosmosis soon enough!

BALUVAR, THE SWAMP NATION
GOVERNMENT
Baluvar operates as a cross between a direct democracy and communism. All inhabitants vote for the laws they want passed, and the Executive Council implements said laws. All land, in turn, is owned by the executive council. However, besides being very inefficient, this system has produced rampant corruption. Only one member of the Executive Council remains true to the principles Baluvar was founded on: COUNCILOR DORUM FALTHUS!

ECONOMY
The state owns all businesses.

HISTORY
Baluvar has existed since the Balukir tribe made their way from the grasslands to the southeastern swamps in 1800 A.E.

RELIGION
While oficially atheist, Baluvar is home to a number of ancient tribal beliefs that center around nature spirits.

Here's a tip for you: You could try to color them "in the paper", before they're scanned.

And I can't tell, is that some kind of tank in the foreground of the picture, or just some kind of big attachment to the bottom of the thing?

That's pretty much a huge attachment to the bottom. I didn't really have the creative juices flowing at the time. Also, who are those two people you mentioned? Finally, I would, and it's not that I lack my supplies, but my room is a wreck and I'm too lazy to clean, organize, and put things where they belong. I'll be posting some better pictures soon.

Post by: Gnoll on September 25, 2010, 04:10:45 pm
It all began with a single religion. which centered on three major deities:

(http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/1958/tkil.jpg) (http://img571.imageshack.us/i/tkil.jpg/)

Ma'tkil, the god of earth and air. He was responsible for all that was solid, but not alive. His avatar was the Great Stone.

(http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/6628/sfiri.jpg) (http://img571.imageshack.us/i/sfiri.jpg/)

Sfiri, the goddess of fire and water. She ruled over all that was alive, but not solid. Her avatar was the Eternal Flame.

(http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1926/marvis.jpg) (http://img80.imageshack.us/i/marvis.jpg/)

And finally, their son/daughter, Marvis. Hir domain was all things that were solid and alive. Hir avatar was the Whirling Tree.

For a time, their worshippers lived in peace. However, one day, a prophet told of a bad omen. The three gods would fight for supreme power over the universe. Eventually, rifts formed between the worshippers. Those who believed that none of the gods had won remained in the central grasslands. Those who believed that Ma'tkil had won left for the southeast. They believed that he had recieved mortal injuries during the fight. However, their followers were usurped by local religions in the southeast, but the Great Stone remained a constant. Those who believed that Sfiri had won fled to the north, intermingling with local tribes. Those who believed that Marvis had won went to the southwest, isolating themselves. However, the prophets died over the years, and many ceased to believe in the gods their ancestors worshipped.

Ok, so, I've got a timeline here based on important events. Also, I changed some dates:
BE-Before Extinction (of the Q'ualain, the predecessor)
AE-After Extinction
BC-Before Contact (with the Space Union)
AC-After Contact

      BC

220,000 BE- first modern Pentekonterus appear in the central grasslands.
19,000 BE- a great mass extinction occurs; Pentekonterus bottleneck to a small population in the grasslands. The Q'ualain evolve at this time.
5,000 BE- the first Q'ualain herders tame the Pentekonterus.
3,000 BE- the first Q'ualain cities appear in the northern part of the grasslands.
1,000 BE- the first Great Q'ualain War. The Q'ualain state of Machira defeats the state of Difsral.
200 BE- the second great Q'ualain War. Machira is destroyed by the Irilts Empire, which uses iron. The knowledge of the use of the Spear of Ruin, as well as records of the ancient religion of the Many Harmonies and Few Melodies, which revered music as the supreme power, are lost.
170 BE- [DATA EXPUNGED]
70 BE- the Great Scuttling. The insectoid races of the planet begin to plague the Q'ualain due to a virus which altered their behavior. The virus is now extinct.
0 AE- the Dusty Schism. The insectoids, having destroyed the Q'ualain, turn on the Pentekonterus. The struggle for the food chain escalates as the cities begin to crumble.
30 AE- the sapience of the Pentekonterus. Armed with knowledge of Q'ualain weaponry, they exterminate the virus' carriers, placating the insectoids.
300 AE- the Ashen Schism. The main religion splits into multiple sects.
450 AE- the Corruption. Many tribes disappear due to infighting, and the grasslands are mostly emptied.
700 AE- the Pale Schism. An epidemic reduces the native population of the northeast extinct. However, immigrants from the grasslands repopulate the area.
1000 AE- the Unification. Many tribes begin to form leagues.
1500 AE- the foundation of Kabalu.
1700 AE- the foundation of Nirbalu.
1800 AE- the beginning of the Endless War. Baluvar exists by this time.
3000 AE- the Endless War is beginning to take its toll on Nirbalu.
3250 AE- the Endless War is officially ended, with Kabalu's victory.
3270 AE- the Final Schism begins when Nirbalu attacks kabalu once again.

      AC

0 AC/3343 AE- First contact of the Pentekonterus with the Galdeen and Nymeidians.
3 AC/3346 AE- the Crisis on Kuuruk.
5 AC/3347 AE- the Pentekonterus join the fight against the Nameless Empire.

You mentioned Arrow, Hammer, and Siege class starships in the Battle for Origin RP. What are they?

Arrow-Class ships rely entirely on lasers for attack, and are in the middle in terms of speed, but have the longest range.
Hammer-Class ships use short-range missiles to attack, and are the fastest, but with the shortest range.
Siege-Class ships use heavy cannons to break down enemy ships and bombard specific targets up to an acre wide. They are the slowest of the three classes, and are in the middle of the range spectrum.

EDIT: It was supposed to say an ACRE wide.

why would a spaceship be slow? seeing how  it's in the vacuum of space. any ship, regardless of size or shape, should be able to move at the speed of any others. unless they decided to put smaller engines with less acceleration on their most damaging ships. but that would be stupid.

I'll ignore the thing about and arcing attack , which is impossible. again, the vacuum of space.

Maybe he means slower to accelerate, or a lower Delta V speed? (Am I using that term right?)
Title: Re: [RG] The Pentekonterus
Post by: Galactic-Warrior on September 26, 2010, 10:18:54 pm
Heaver mass means more engine power to make it move. Must have a lot of mass if its slow.
Title: Re: [RG] The Pentekonterus
Post by: Gnoll on September 27, 2010, 02:11:57 pm
Yep. Each has the same engines, but the siege ships are the most massive, and the hammers are the least. This was based on the nonsensical naval mechanics of Age of Mythology. Yes, that's right, I'm poking fun at that.
Title: Re: [RG] The Pentekonterus

That tiny thumbnail that's most likely on the previous page? That's the Arrow-class.
I'm basing the Hammer-class on a city bus and the Siege-class on a train. It will be hilarious. Now, what did you all think of the timeline?

Now, for a bit about those precursors I talked about...
The Q'ualain
(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/3944/ualain.jpg) (http://img137.imageshack.us/i/ualain.jpg/)

Origin and Story
The Q'ualain were part of the Dragworm class of fauna, a group that originated in the deep seas. You see, Kuuruk's life began in two separate areas, independently of each other. First, it formed in the warm, shallow pools of the planet, fuelled by lightning strikes and organic matter. However, it appeared on its own again in the deep seas, near the vents. From this second group formed the Dragworms, and their cousins, the Finworms. All dragworms have legs, which they use to drag their mouths across the sea floor. The bulbous growth at their tops allows them to breathe. The Q'ualain were unique among their kind in having lungs and arms instead of gills. As born detritivores, they cared not for agriculture. However, nothing on land found them appetizing. They began to build cities in the grasslands and forests. This was after they encountered the Pentekonterus and tamed them. As beings with hearing, smell, taste, and touch, but no sight, the Q'ualain had no words for sights. They did not write, instead using a peculiar drum system for their communications and recordings. They did, however, make strange sculptures which may have represented sounds, and many perfumes that the artists used to aid their work. To this day, the Pentekonterus have not been able to decipher Q'ualain language, except for two words: the word for "up" and the word for "pack animal." The second applied to the Pentekonterus, who served their masters faithfully until...

The Great Q'ualain Wars
Machira began the wars when it was discovered that a Difsralian sheperd had stolen some Pentekonterus from the king. This resulted in a bloody war. The second war, however, was one of conquest instead of economics. The Irlits Empire, which had abandoned the Many Harmonies and Few Melodies, attacked Machira and destroyed it. All records that could be used later were burned... or so they thought. The sculptures and many of the instruments survived, enough for the Pentekonterus to make out what they meant. It helped that a very late visitor to the temple had written down the doctrine of the religion in a script that he had invented, after discovering that touch could be used instead of hearing. This, the Blffn Script, has been translated well. Soon, however, the Q'ualain were extinct, and their final cries and drumbeats all repeated one word for hours.: "DEATH. DEATH. DEATH. DEATH. DEATH..."

Must've been pretty hard for them to record their history.

Any chance we could get an overlay/comparison of the Q'ualain's and Pentekonterus' map of the world?
Title: Re: [RG] The Pentekonterus
Post by: Gnoll on October 01, 2010, 04:02:45 pm
Maybe.

EDIT: Indeed, it was very hard. Most evidence is from artifacts or the Blffn Script, which recorded everything the writer knew about his people's history.

Sorry for the doublepost, but it's time you learn about some popular games on Kuuruk.

Demyks
Ok, so imagine the Mayan ballgame. Y'know, the one where you can only hit the giant rubber ball with your hips, elbows, or knees? Now take those rules, and apply them to a tennis-like goal. This is Demyks. Each team of four tries to knock the ball onto the other side of the court using only their tail, elbows, or stomach. It's made even harder when some of the poses you'd need for a successful return are physically impossible for most players. The absurdity is the best part. Which leads me to...

Demyyms
This might seem like your ordinary race at first, right? Well... not really. It's more of an endurance test. These races can go on for hours, days, or even weeks, depending on the stamina of the runners. Imaginee having to run a marathon with ridiculous weights and awkward loads piled onto you. Well, that's what these racers have to deal with. It's not the first person who makes it to the finish line that wins, it's the only person to the finish line. Well, that's the most usual result. Due to the species' general lack of defined gender roles, most of history's grand champions have been female. Then again, there tend to be no roles when there's almost no physical difference between a man and his wife. They literally have to ask any given Pentekonterus whether it's male or female in some places, because you just never know. Sometimes, even the Pentekonterus that you are asking doesn't know.

OMG DOUBLEPOST

Shamelessly Ripped-Off Current Issue Questionnaire With An Graidient Average Terran-Ixian Pentekonterus

Feelings on homosexuality: "Well, we kind of have to ask whether someone is male or female here, so... it gets complicated. This isn't nearly as controversial here on Kuuruk."

Feelings on abortion: "We lay eggs, so that's pretty much impossible for us."

Global warming: "Dude... why would you destroy your polar ice caps? We never had those! Those would be completely awesome! It never 'snows' here on Kuuruk. How awesome would snowball fights be? Then again, you don't have the money for all that renewable stuff, whereas the Space Union provides it for us, so..."

Feeling on free public health care: "AHAHAHAHAHA! You actually need healthcare!? Oh, yeah, I forgot you get sick real easy."

Feelings on political corruption: "I feel your pain. We have to deal with that a lot. But Irbilika, he doesn't let those jerks get off easy! It's sttraight to the guillotine!"

Feelings on immigration: "OH MAK'TIL NO, not this mess again. Immigration is really wierd around here, there's no set laws, but there's an unwritten code. Unwritten laws, the ones people impose on themselves, often work the best."

Feelings on torture: "Well... we don't have that. It's kinda inmpossible to do those sorts of things to us."

Feelings on creationism: "In the beginning... we're just as confused about what happened as you are, so don't worry about it."

Feelings on the Knights of Vengeance: "The Nameless will see what vengeance means..."

Feelings on the Pentekonterus: "Wait, why would you ask me what I think about my own race? Of course I think we're awesome!"

Feelings on the Perrachi [Socialist Phase]: "Don't know too much about 'em, so..."

Feelings on the Perrachi [Communist Phase]: "What is this I don't even-"

Feelings on the Photos: "Ok, that antimatter stuff is awesome. And the Waratica mech pilots? People here write comic books about this stuff!"

Feelings on the Skrall: "OHGODPLEASEDON'TKILLUSLIKETHEPROPHECYSAIDYOUWOULD"

Essentially KitKat's law states that information pertaining to a certain thing (I.E. a creature) and in a suitable format to be easily modified, will be used to provide further iformation on a different subject (I.E. another creature.)

In a modified format, it could also be the explanation to the spreading of internet memes, as Dr. Octagonapus said.

Since I'll be leaving (for a long while) once PlanetChum is over, I would like to present part one of:

The Logbook of Epic Fail

Part 1: Descension Station

After several studies of the Spear of Ruin, it was believed that at least some of the Q'ualain had not been killed in the Scuttling, but rather, had been taken to another level of existence by the gods. Then, the Pentekonterus decided that they would build a staircase to this higher plane. The whole experiment was doomed from the start. The stone used was of poor quality, and being that they were still in their Iron Age, there was no way for this structure to be anything more than a very large staircase. In the end, it collapsed, destroying three cities. The Pentekonterus learned to never try anything that ambitious again, until...

And this is why it's in the logbook of epic fail. They built cities DIRECTLY UNDER THE STAIRCASE. Yes, any character or race I create is liable to do something extremely stupid at least once. As they say, can't make an uber monument without cracking some eggs. Or in this case, cities.  ;D

Interestingly enough, according to some calculations, ancient people, coupled with the use of well made bricks for their time, could theoretically allow humans to build a tapering tower so high that its construction would have to be postponed indefinitely, until oxygen tanks are invented. xp

People will eventually adapt to the weather on such heights, like how the people in the Andies or Shangri-La did, though it might take some time depending on which specific people build the tower, what with some civs more used to higher elevations than others.

On a related note, as pointless as building an inefficiently high tower is, I guess it might help boost development of much more advanced construction technology, I guess. Not to mention the perfect watchtower.  :D
