Topic: Sin City

Sort of like Sim City but with more bosoms and less police funding.  Hmmm...Trying to create Sin City using a Sim City game.  The prospect...intrigues?  Anyway, I just saw this film and really enjoyed it.  I was suspicious because Frank Miller is a crazy person who puts tiny men in Superman's ear just for fun but this was a truly awesome movie.  I know I say that many things are "truly awesome"  or "totally amazing" but I live in superlatives.  If anyone sees this movie, let me know what you think because I really enjoyed myself.  If anyone has read the graphic novels, I'd be interested to know how they compare.  Allright, off to geek out.  -leeman

I saw this flick opening night with pretty low expectations (or as low as I could force myself to make them — I was really excited about this movie) and I was thoroughly blown away.

I knew the style was going to be great, but I didn't know it would work as well as it did. The setting was a perfect mix of fantasy and realism. The characters Frank Miller puts in that setting are all way cool. All the acting jobs were top-notch minus Michael Madsen, who really disappointed me (He was A+ in Kill Bill, but every line he delivered in this movie made me embarrassed for him).

What surprised me the most was how much I loved the story and structure. I've never read the graphic novels, but I have some friends that have and they each said the movie matched up perfectly with the books (it should have, they used frames from the books for each of their storyboards).

I was also surprised by the level of violence, but I'm sure I wouldn't have been if I had read the books. But even the ultraviolence is portrayed in a very cool and unreal way that each time either made me exclaim "WOW" or burst out in laughter.

Sin City may very well be my new favorite movie. I'll have to watch it a few more times after it comes out on video to be sure.

If you can handle the subject matter, I'd recommend this movie to anyone.

I enjoyed it a lot too. The style is great, the stories are interesting and intertwine well. Hell, it's inspired me to go out and buy the books.

I would think it would be very true to the books. I read an article in Wired about Robert Rodriguez, who's the director. Apparently Frank Miller did not want Sin City to ever become a movie since he didn't think anyone could do it right, but then Robert Rodriguez showed him this 5 minute clip (or something, it did turn out to be the intro to the movie) and Frank Miller was instantly sold. That alone gives me really high expectations for this movie.

I enjoyed it, but not quite as much as others. For me I just got a little oversaturated on the violence. It wasn't like any one thing offended or bothered me, but something about two hours got a little tedious.

That said, the visual look of the movie was great, most of the performances were solid -- I never thought I'd say this, but Mickey Rourke was great. (I would agree with TheGitaroo about Michael Madsen... he seemed like he was mailing his part in), and I'd concede that even the violence was appropriate to the comic book/graphic novel milieu, and I liked the subcurrent of dark humor that ran through it.

I just finished watching the movie. I think they really overdid the gory/violence part of the movie. As one review stated, the movie was stretched too long and the violence got too repetitive. I've got to agree.

Plus, I didn't get how the plot connected. Were they supposed to be separate vignettes, or do I have to read the comics to know? Can anyone explain please?

The plot didn't connect really. It was just seperate stories which all took part in the same city with some overlapping characters. Similar to Pulp Fiction in many ways.

It was extremely violent, but yet nearly all the "blood" was white and the entire movie was in black & white. Strange how a stylized B&W movie with white blood can come off as such a violent movie.

When I watched this movie, I thought to myself, "I can't believe how a few years ago Saving Private Ryan and Gladiator were our goriest movies - look at things now!"

That's what I figured, about the separate plots. My friend says that Josh Harnett character was just there to sort of represent the evils of the city, which makes sense.

I thought that it was the first comic to film translation that actually worked 100%.  As far as the violence goes, I think that the stylized nature of it gave it extra impact, otherwise it ran the risk of becoming just another slasher/grindhouse flick.

If you like Sin City, particularly the Hartagan character, I would recommend picking up Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. His version of Batman is verrry similar.

The movie was good but tends to leave a strange taste in peoples mouths, so to speak, nothing beats the comic.

Stylistically, Sin City is one of a kind.  I am a fair-weather fan of stuff like this, but Sin City was really refreshing.  It added lots of over the top action/violence and it was done by a great cast of convincing people.

However, I felt the film was both too short and too long.  It was too short in the fact that (correct me if I'm wrong) there were a TON of characters introduced but most of them weren't expanded on.  I would have liked to see two or three movies fleshing out the characters, with each movie following a more cohesive storyline.
The movie was too long in the fact that it was disjointed.  No sooner did I stop reeling from one ending when another beginning came up and I didn't have time to sit back and appreciate what had just happened.  And, for some odd reason, about 2/3 through the movie, my internal clock kept telling me the movie should end.

Then again, pretty much everything is absolved upon seeing Jessica Alba in a cowgirl outfit.   

I think this is a movie that needs to be watched a few times to be truly appreciated (like Pulp Fiction), so I look forward to a DVD release so I don't feel to pressured ot take so much in at once.
