Title: Firefly
Post by: deku12345 on April 08, 2006, 02:13:31 am
Who else here is a fan?  This has got to be my all time favorite tv show.  Its full of great characters, great acting, hilarious situations, and a well-rounded plot in a very original universe.  Unfortunately, Fox in its infinite wisdom cancelled it after 14 episodes.

You may be a fan of it and not even know it!  The movie Serenity, which came out on DVD in December, is a continuation of the series.  Joss Whedon, the creator, said he would like to make more movies, but the likelihood of that happening isn't too good.

I know some of you have fallen in love with this show just as me (and my entire family) have.  If you HAVN'T seen it, you owe it to yourself to check it out.  The sci-fi channel plays it sometimes I think, and there is the complete series out on DVD.

I saw a few episodes of this show while it was on Fox, but never got into it too much. But now the entire series is only $18...so I have no excuse not to buy it and watch.

Love Firefly, loved Serenity, have both on DVD. I was a fan of the show when it was on fox and one of those individuals who was ticked that it got cancelled, then later on totally ecstatic to learn a movie was being made. I just wish there was a way to continue the story. I've heard there's a few comic books too but have never seen them myself.

There are 3 comics, and a graphic novel.  AFAIK, they tie Firefly to Serenity.  Haven't got round to reading them yet.

For clarification: The 3 comics are collected in the graphic novel. They're not seperate from one another. So if you bought the graphic novel, you have the 3 comics.

I have a question in the comics when they curse in Chinese do they use Chinese symbols or just write it phonetically in engish?

It's in Kanji.

Can I assume Kanji is Chinese written language or something similar?

Kanji is a japanese language. Chinese would be Mandarin, Cantonese, or Hokkien.

Kanji isn't a Japanese language. The national language of Japan is (surprise!) Japanese.

Kanji is the Japanese word for the set of complex characters that were imported from China. In most cases the Japanese kanji are still written the same and often share meaning with their representation in China. The shared meaning is often in an abstract, as opposed to concrete sense. Furthermore, while sharing a common written script, Chinese (be it Cantonese, Mandarin, etc) is constructed differently and spoken differently.

The two other written scripts used in Japan are known as Hiragana and Katakana.

About 2000 Kanji are in daily use in Japan.

I was going to say it would be strange if it was strictly japanese seeing as how they speak Chinese on the show.

Thank you. You've kept me from dredging up painful memories of living in Japan and explaining how I knew all this too. :)

heck I'd watch it just for the mechanic, but anyway it is really well written, and I do hope that there will be another series

My best friend met Summer Glau [River] and he said she was absolutely gorgeous, that they'd really toned her down for the series; they felt her looks would distract from the character's psychosis in some way. He has a picture of him with her. And though I'm sure seeing him sitting next to her improves on her looks a bit, she is still insanely good looking.

So yeah, I think even if I didn't like the series I'd watch another for her. Something about a beautiful woman that's ridiculously flexible and can kick my ass while I'm standing behind her is appealing for some reason.

There was a rumor going around that Shepherd was the Alliance general that defeated Mal at Serenity Valley, but that was never verified.

too bad he got killed off in the movie, een if they do somehow make a second series there's not much chance of us ever finding out.

Whedon has pretty much said there wouldn't be another series, but there is a possibility of them making a 2nd film -- even if it ends up being one of those Made For TV things. Considering that the original series looked as good as it did, I could buy them making a pretty awesome looking TV movie out of it.

It happened with Family Guy and apparently will happen with Futurama. Maybe Fox will realize how stupid they were for cancelling the show and allow some reincarnated form to be born. I'd love to see the story continue, though it wouldn't be quite the same without Shepherd or Wash.

Weadon has said though that at this point making the Tv series again just wouldn't be the same and what with Wash dead it just ruins it even more he was the best character!

I would definitely not say he was the best character. He was quite entertaining though. I personally prefer Mal and River as characters, which is why the film was like a dream for me.

I love all the characters, but River is probably my favorite. Kaylee would have to be a close second.

"Lets hear it for the hero of Camdon!"

Jayne. The man they call Jayne...

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And he gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' lament
And he saw the Magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said, "You can't do that to my people"
He said, "You can't crush them under your heel"
So Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And he gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit sky

He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars!

Here we go!

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Written by the brilliant creator of The Tick. =) I love that episode.
