I'm guessing you're just being amazed by females in your life playing video games? If so I have to say I feel sorry for you.

I don't find it AMAZING, but I am posting this because it does testify to the idea that Spore will be something with a universal appeal. I implied that I've found other games that also appealed to my female friends, in fact very many, but they appear considerably less frequently than those games that appeal to my male chums exclusively.

Now, have you ever considered that you, not as a female but purely as a member of a Spore-oriented (Sporiented?) Message Board, likely don't represent the average person? I myself am decidedly unaverage, and thus would be the first to admit such a thing.

Spore is supposed to appeal to a wider audience. It was designed to do so.
Part of its androgenous success is due to the way it works. The editor provides hours of creative fun. No T or M content neccessary. It has no real "male" bias like, say, most FPS or SW games have (Its true - FPS games and SW Games, with the exception of lego SW, target males in their advertising. That doesn't mean girls don't like video games. its all a matter of personal preference. Its a cultural myth that all girls dislike video games).

BTW; my younger sister played the editor. Normally she just pretends to not like anything that has anything to do with me. When I finally got her to try it, she was hooked. The moral? The fun-ocity of Spore is impossible to resist.

lol and i'm a guy and I get plain bored with css, quake deathmatch or antyhing that's just snipe, shoot, and get efficient at killing with guns.

When I saw Crysis warhammer I went like... pff all they show is explosions: where's the story, cause that's what got me a bit interested in crysis because it's "with aliens", but I havn't touched the game in 6 months.

I play portal, trackmania, and sometimes even UT or i used to play tribes 2 because they are versatile, I was always bringing people back and forth across camps with vehicles, if you can do different things than shooting in a shooter, i tend to like it more.

My reaction to girls playing spore and sims is not so surprised, it's about art, creation, and spore really homes in on that aspect. I'm more amazed by women acting all bad-ass about css and quakewars

Well... not a single one of my friends (mostly girls) don't like playing guitar hero, rockband, pretty much any wii game, spore, or sims with me.... and i'd say a good number of them own other games themselves, like virtua fighter and stuff like that. And of course a couple of them even spent hours a day on WoW... and a few with Diablo. I don't see why everyone things gaming is just a guy thing, because its not anymore. personally i know more girls that play video games than guys.

I think the fact that you create something in Spore and see it grow up helps to attact a lot of people to the game. I think people enjoy building up more often then breaking things apart. The Sims certainly prove that, although I never could get into that myself.

I like both at times, but enjoy games where I build something, like Civilization, Settlers, or an (MMO)RPG (building your character) the most.

I think it should be applauded whenever a game achieves a sense of universal appeal.  But instead it seems normally girls that don't play games don't care either way, and girls that DO like games tend to get agitated at the notion that games may need changed to appeal to girls.

I happen to talk regularly with lots of women.  Two sisters, a few aunts, my mom, wife, daughter, and sister-in-laws to boot.  None of them have been willing to sit down and try my creature creator.  However, my 2 male friends that I talk to at work have all tried it.  Unfortunately I don't have a father, brothers, or anything like that, but I really hope that Spore ultimately finds a market with a women that ordinarily would never play games.

I know I'm still trying to get members of my family to try it.

Generally, there are some things that appeal to one sex or the other, and some things that appeal to both. I like watching football, but generally, this does not mean both sexes do. Contrarily, I don't care for most chick flicks, but that doesn't mean they aren't chick flicks.

A lot more women are gaming now than 5 or 10 years ago, but it's still a male dominated(ratio-wise) hobby. I am happy when games like Spore come out. Borrowing from marijuana prevention vernacular, they're gateway games Despite being such a huge influence in my daughters life, she's never shown much interest in gaming. But when something like the Spore Creature Creator comes along, it at least gets her on the computer playing something. Slowly but surely, with the help of Will Wright, I will make her a gamer.

It seems like everytime someone mentions a study about girls and video games you get name calling and agression.
While I don't think the OP's "study" in reality can be called anything but a "personal observation" (based on a relatively small and likely unvaried test group), REAL studies can show trends with certain elements' appeal to the genders. Chick flicks was a great example.

Based on my OWN "personal observation" among MY female friends, and on the type of games that have been shown in several previous proper studies to appeal to females, I can say that yes this is one of the games that seems more likely to appeal to females as well - particularly and specifically the non-gamer variant.
This doesn't mean that all gamer-girls will not like it, and that all non-gamer girls will; it means only exactly that which was said.

So far my Fiance is less into the spore creature creator than I am, though she has made a few creatures. She really had her heart set on there being aquatic creatures, but there arent (at least not intitially).

That being said, I'm sure she'll be more interested in Spore once it comes out. Just not enough to drool over it for the next 78 days.

Its a half misconception/half truth resulting mainly from the following:

1. Popular culture frowns upon the idea of girls playing videogames, labeling video games are labeled as "masculine".

2. most videogames are pitched toward guys rather than girls (ex: Most video games have male main characters, portray females as "sex objects", and ads show males playing the game). A few exceptions include the "Nintendogs" ads, and barbie pc game ads. They don't so much portray the actual population's views, but are intended to influence public opinion, contributing to (1).

3. Gaming-related television puts out messages similar to those described in two. For more examples of gender-role stereotypes, watch just 20 minutes of "Spike", and then 20 minutes of the "Oxygen" channel.

There is no "video gaming gene" that only guys have. Its all depends on personal preference and the game in question.

Not to be sexist, but society is the cause of it and at fault. In the west, traditionally girls create and boys destroy. In other societies, it's another story, but that's just the west, and my 2 cents to your findings. Sad thing really, because historically elsewhere, girls can be very destructive and boys can be very creative.

I always find it curious though, that if a girl is portrayed like a sex object that this is something that is not done, while girls nowadays are always reducing men to their butt or their eyes or his chest or what not. Surely if you go to the ladies room you'll have "object" talk. Ok they usually bath these conversation in lots of emo cream, but women can see men as sex objects as much as men can do with women.

The only difference i see is that it might be that men don't really have the whole emotional scala of feelings, romantic stray and whatnot: when they think about boobs. I feel myself slowly entering the generalisation again, cause that's what will always happen if you think that the one is more sex oriented than the other,...

It's always those who talk the most respectless about any aspect of the other sex: that get noticed the most easiest.

Now the first thought about this idea was that I suddenly think of a "model" like lara croft. Men will say rrr i wanna play her, some wommen will surely say "I wish i was her so i was more sexy". Not every women will do that. As not every man will be seeing this as the ultimate companion.

I often get the comment of being gay if I resist these kind of role models myself, that's not fun too: so I'm trying to think that both sexes can be extremely sexist.. or not.

There is no huge difference between men and women psychologically, it all boils down to how we were raised, generally boys are raised differently than girls and vice versa, but every likes and dislikes aren't coded into our gender, it just differentiates based on how we are as people.
So does it really matter whether women or men like games? If people like games then that's that, why try to make it a gender thing?
It's irrelevant; I know that hiphoppers and clubbers like this game as well, but it doesn't really matter, the stereotype is rarely the majority.

The original games were made by little nerds. Then they sold them and silly wannabe soldiers bought them. Then the artsy types put their morals and stories into it and so people who read books started playing them for the stories.

Something I have noticed that really bugs me is the way some guys treat women in online games. Every time I am in a server in GTA IV and a female starts talking, there is always at least one guy that starts putting her down and calling her names. There is no excuse for doing that and I can see why a lot of females probably are not vocal about gaming. Some probably play with out even saying a word. It's a shame really. I like hearing female voices in the chatter. Too bad there are the jerks who think they have to run the women off. I guess they are afraid of being beaten by a female.

I'm not sure why you think this sort of censorship is (or began as) a liberal* thing. There are plenty of people on both sides who have favored censoring videogames (and books and movies and radio...) for as long as they have existed—and there are plenty of people on both sides who have always thought that such censorship is an infringement on basic human rights.

It's not a "liberal" thing or a "conservative" thing. It's just an ethical philosophy thing—a matter of whether it's better to control people for their own good or better to let people control themselves, for better or for worse.
