I've had an idea of how to turn this bug into a feature. How about a density slider in the CC. Lets say it goes from 1 to 10.

-At 10 the creature has high density. It is strongly pulled to the ground. Because of it's dense musculature it can hit hard and it's very durable but because it's so heavy it doesn't move as fast. It also consumes energy faster. Think turtle or crab.

-At 5 the creature is of average density. It can move fairly quickly because of a good balance between power and weight. It has an average energy consumption. Think most mammals.

-At 1 the creature has low density. It is filled with gas bladders which make it very buoyant in the atmosphere. It can kind of hop about like when someone is hoping underwater or on the moon. It has low power and speed because it has a limited musculature but it also consumes a lot less energy for the same reason.

Advantages of the system:
-Compromise between editor flexibility and physics: If you made a creature with no legs that doesn't touch the ground the game would simply limit your density slider to 3 or below. So you'll have to use gas bladders if your creature is impossible otherwise. Same thing with making a huge creature with a tiny leg or a leg way to the side. Normally it should fall over. The game will just say "The creature you just made is impossible so it must be using gas bladders to stay upright." and limit you to density 3 or less. If you want to open up higher density simply add solid legs that can support your creature's weight.

-User filtering choice: If you don't like floaties you can simply exclude everyone with density 3 or below. If you love floaties make the game bias for them. If there is a metric for it you can specify what you want or don't want in the search filters.

-More creature customization and playstyle variety: Gassy creatures need less food, take less fall damage and are good at flying but are a bit frail. Average density creatures are fast and average in other attributes. Dense creatures are durable but slower and need more food. But since they probably travel less than the average it works out ok energy wise. There can even be different abilities only available at certain densities.

So what do you think?

My predictions for Spore.

1) No water creatures at initial release. I was right about this even when the fanboys were denying it.
2) No composite limbs at initial release. eg. Buttface; attaching a limb to a limb to... Update: Prediction was incorrect. Buttface is in!
3) Spore will outsell the Sims and be the best selling game of all time until something better comes along.

Cool idea, but way too unfeasible for the time that's left I think.

Maybe not in six days but for september they could do it.

I think it's a great idea but I think it's too late, for now. They will have a very tight plan from now till september and can't afford any extra work.
For a patch or expansion however, that's entirely possible and worth noting I think :)

This may turn out to be a horrendous mistake, but I'm going to stick to my conviction that creatures cannot hover. We have never actually seen a creature hover in a recent video in which the creature has been saved. Until then, I will not believe.

See this is floating. If the wheels were taken off i bet it would stay in the same spot and not fall to the ground..

Yeah, the wheels don't even seem to touch the ground completely, they don't even rotate.

That's cuz they're weapons, not feet. But the editor does seem to try and make the lowest extremities 'feet' in the absence of actual feet. Interesting.

Also, a possible slitherer WITH arms: Melusine

I think floating is a major plus. Also, I don't think it's fair to call it unreaslitic. Spore takes place in an alternate universe, so the density of atoms and properties of fundamental mechanisms are entirely unknown. Besides, Maxis (thankfully) places entertainment above realism.

Just ask yourself, how many sci-fi beings have had the ability to float? Many!

Floating opens up the door to more mystical and creative creatures.

Besides, who wouldn't want a beholder in-game?!

i'm a fan of the GDC 2005 Spore video on Google Videos...

To me it looks like it's slithering on the little flat bit at the bottom.

They should have a bit of animations on the wings. (and smiler parts.) I wonder if its to late and/or complex to add that?

*Vid*

Is this floating?

No. Look at the two spindly (and inverted?) insect legs holding it to the ground.

Wait, yea. I think you're right. It's floating.
