Title: Death Note
Post by: Fink on January 08, 2008, 11:44:15 am
Warning: this is an anime, but I think non-anime fans will enjoy it. Keep reading

Ok, I'm always the last one to hear about new Anime, but this series is so good that I have to make a topic about it.

I was watching AMV Hell 4, and I saw what looked like the same anime pop up over and over. I look through the credits, and sure enough "Death Note" was all over it.

So I decided to watch it and see what it was about.
Holy cow, it turned out to be one of the best animes I have ever seen.

The premise is that the main character (Light) finds a notebook if a persons name is written in it, they will die (It's a little more complicated that that, but whatever)

Basically it turns into a battle of wits between Light and the guy trying to capture him: "L"
This anime feels like watching a chess match in terms of strategy, and intellect.

Whats also interesting is that you see the majority of the anime from the bad guys viewpoint (who has a comic relief "side kick")

If you want to see the show it's on cartoon network adult swim, but the next episode is episode 14.
Here's the 1st 11 episodes if you wanted to take a look:

Death Note (http://www.deathnote.tv/list.php)

(Sorry if this post didn't make sense. I tried my best, but I've been up all night)

Lol, keep watching, the subject of finding out who L is gets interesting.

And on that subject, L is so freaking cool.

I saw about 4 consecutive episodes near the beginning, then missed them and saw a few later.

They're just too few and far between.

Just go watch them on that web page I posted. They have the 1st 11 in English, but the whole series is on there if you wanted to watch the Japanese sub version.

It's the only anime I watch.

It's very good, if only because it was made after the manga was complete, as opposed to as it was written, which leads to 22 minute episodes being designed around 10 pages of material.

I've seen all the episodes. The first 20 episodes are pretty good but after the 22, the show decreases in imagination.

I guess it could be a bit hard to undestand if you havn't been following the story.  Luckily I discovered it when the 2nd episode was on and have been following it dutifully ever since.  I'm right around... episode 14 or so I think?  Don't know for sure, it's the part where:

*ZOMG SPOILERS*

Light and Misa are released from solitary and his dad pretends to try to kill him and L straps himself to Light.

*End Spoilers*

Conveniently enough it comes on right after full metal alchemist, another anime I've gotten into.

I don't think you ever learn his real name. He just goes by L or Ryuzaki.
Both of which are fake. I think they said that Ryuzaki is a name of a famous singer in japan.

[Edit]

I tired to look for the singer, but it's just saturated with Death Note.
So I don't know if it's a real person or not.

No, Ryuzaki is a made up name, Ryuga is the singer's name, which he uses on campus.

Anyone else read through the entire Manga?  It gets really convoluted towards the end.

I'm not going to comment on how poorly your post is, but if you dislike the subject you don't need to post in it and mock everyone who happens to like it.

Anyway, did anyone see the latest one on Adult swim? I loved Matsuda's ring tone. Very 4th wall breaking moment  :D

Post by: martyk on July 05, 2008, 11:51:38 am
From what I heard the English version is better than the Japaneese because the actor doing Light's voice puts alot more emotion into his voice.

Anyway, I thought the last episode as a whole was pretty good, but the very ending was somewhat disappointing.  I disliked how it deviated from the origional manga (which I stumbled upon a week or so ago).  I just don't think light should have gone as quietly as he did at the very end.  Ryuk's ending dialouge should have been said to him, not off in the distance.

Also, epilouge.  You can't end a series like that without an epilouge.
Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Ultramarine on July 05, 2008, 10:13:04 pm
Yes Brad Swaile has a way more dramatic tone compared to the jap dub.
He does a marvelous job at Light, which proves the Viz's pressure to find good voice actors.

As for the ending it was phenomenal, the tone, the plot outline, the epilogue, character actions everything was great. I'm not going to spoil it as I wish not to ruin it for others but it's worth the watch.

I have to say when I have the opprotunity I'm definitely buying the series on DVD.
Worth the money and for special order you can get an honorary deathnote copy ^_^

I think I liked the voice actor of L the best in the series. That guy was great.
It was on par of the voice actors in the Ender's game audio book.

(I know that's random, but it's true)

[Edit]

Just saw the last one. Your right, the English voice actor of Light is a lot better.

Yeah L's voice was well done too.

And Brad's was magnificent.
If anyones a Gundam geek you will notice that Brad voices Amuro Ray from Gundam 0079 and Complation movie Chars Counter attack.

Just a fun fact for all :D
Have to say Brad really but the dramatics in well, made the real psychopathic character come out really well. I was very pleased with his performance.

It didn't end as I had wished, but nonetheless the final episode was absolutely brilliant.

To get the leverage on American TV you could have watched it in Japanese dubb online if you hda wished to Brandon. Sort of like how Bleach is blisteringly ahead of the US in comparison to where we are now, but that's just my thoughts.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Neoadept on July 06, 2008, 07:01:25 am
I thought the ending was lacking, but that might be because I read through the manga first.  They were exactly the same right up until Light started freaking out.  I'm going to spoiler it in case anyone wants to read it for themselves.

When Light calls out to Mikami to kill everyone after getting shot, Mikami doesn't kill himself.  Instead, he freezes for a moment before screaming at Light that he can't be god because his plan failed (or something like that, it's been awhile).  Then Near says that he won't kill Light, just lock him up in a place where he'll never see day light or hear another human voice for the rest of his life.  Light continues calling for help from people who aren't there before spotting Ryuk and crawling towards him.  He pleads to Ryuk to use the notebook, and Ryuk agrees and starts writing.  He then says the same thing that he does in the anime, that he isn't going to wait around for Light to die on his own.

There's a flashback to when Ryuk first appeared, when he was explaining the rules of the Deathnote.  Just after he explains that the user can't go to heaven or hell, it's revealed that Light immediately said "Because there's no such places right?"  It is revealed that this is the case and that humans don't last beyond this world.

Back to present, Light starts pleading with Ryuk, screaming that he doesn't want to stop existing.  Ryuk explains that it's already been written.

Then it shows a year later.  The Japanese Kira investigation squad has been gathered by Near to help with a renegade drug lord he's been after.  In their conversation it is revealed that Mikami killed himself in prison shortly after being locked up, and someone speculates that Near may have written his name just before burning the note to ensure it was real.  It is not certain if this is the case.  It is also revealed that crime reached record highs a few months after the killings stopped, but have now stabilized to pre-Kira levels.  Kira's followers insist that their god is still alive and that he will return to cleanse the world again after he is done resting.

The final page shows an isolated mountain range with a winding trail of lights leading to the peak.  As the view shifts closer each light becomes a figure carrying a candle.  It shifts closer to the peak and shows a single cloaked figure standing at the highest point.  A final view inside the cloak's hood reveals that Misa has become the leader of Kira's cult.

End of DeathNote.

Exactly.  I could watch the various series that I follow on the internet if I so desired, and my parents fail to under stand why I'd want to stay up til 3 in the morning watching them when I could just tape it, but I dunno, there's something more special about it with the suspense of the week wait and commercials.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Neoadept on July 18, 2008, 08:10:25 pm
But the story is the whole thing!  The note itself is great for enabling that story, but the series is less about that and more about the battle between enormous intellects and question of who is actually the good guy.

And I think we'd all prefer to have the various super powers we read about than, well, read about them.  But then it wouldn't be a story, would it?
Title: Re: Death Note

I agree with Neo. When I once mentioned the series to someone, I stumbled at whether the protagonist was the 'good guy.' If a show makes you think, or reconsider your morals, it's doing something right. It's all a complex, world-spanning game of chess.

I've just started watching this, and I was sceptical at first but now I'm really into it. Every second I think 'Wow, L is smart: Kira is being an idiot and playing right into his hands" followed by 'Wow, Kira is devious.'

Although killing criminals seems a little pointless; they're going to die or be imprisoned anyway. I'd concentrate on ridding the world of escaped Nazis and people whose politics I deem unworthy. Moral Absolutism is fine if you're doing it.
