Forget those idiots.  Idiots: Gaah!  Reading makes brain hurt!  Me smash stupid text thing! (Proceeds to throw feces at cage wall)

I will be Raka, age 81, Martian captain.  Having played a quintessential role in the wars against the Green Martians, Raka has established himself as a valuable asset, and has risen to a semi-important role in the Martian military force.  Recently, he has been summoned to take part in a special secret project, codenamed:  "Blue Star".  An expert pilot of the fighting machines, he cannot wait to set his vast intellect and cold precision to the job his government has set out for him.

He did not expect to be launched out of a hydrogen cannon.

((Can we NOT use C.S. Lewis's creatures?  The Silent Planet was a bit... too Narnia if you asked me.  It doesn't fit in with the Martians.  Also, I'm assuming we are using Edgar's The Princess of Mars civilizations (Hence the Green Martians).  That also makes the orange-people civilization (Can't rememeber the name) part of the story.  They had atmosphere factories and aetheric flyers.  Will this be included?))

((Alright, no more C.S. Lewis. But only Green Martians, which are apparently called Tharks. I think it would be a funny reference if the Martians from the Calvin and Hobbes story Weirdos From Another Planet! were a species similar to rats.))

((What about that funny little ostrich guy from that short story? Expedition to Mars, or something? With the black tentacle creature that makes illusions and the big silicon-based gray lump and the ostrich guy that said, "You one-one-two, he two-two-four"? Naw, let's not, it'll just make up more required reading. But still, he was a funny little ostrich-thingy.))

EDIT: Here's a character for you. This is one of Raka's four ship-mates(cylider-mates?) on the first pod. Raka is in the first pod, see. His co-pilot is Oorl, age 73, a flying-machine pilot and war veteran from the southern hemisphere. Not unlike Raka, Oorl did not expect to be launched out of a large-scale hydrogen accelerator, despite the fact that he already knew about the project. He assumed that he was being assigned to a top-secret mission to combat the Tharks. Obviously, his assumption was wrong. Oorl feels that the invasion of Earth was uncalled for, and he has always stuck to the belief that the Martian race should be colonizing Earth's moon, where the less advanced Selenites reside. Oorl is absolutely certain that project Blue Star is a suicide mission and will fail tremendously. Why does he think this? Because there are so many humans. As you can gather, the seasoned veteran has little faith left in Martian technology. He predicts that if the suspension pod is not blown up by the incredibly savage and hostile humans within hours of landing, the bipedal vermin will rush him and his ship-mates, tearing apart their flesh with their bare hands. Even if by some miracle they manage to get a fighting machine constructed, the humans will climb up the legs of the tripod, smash up the cockpit, and rip up the Martian fleshes like the vicious, deranged little buggers they are.

Whew! See if you can wade your way through that wall of text! :)
Now, Martian Overlord characters, anyone? I need some people to fill in the positions of the other three crew members on the first pod. Man, I'm so hyped about this. I'll turn on the Jeff Wayne musical. Dun dun dun DUN dun DUN, dun dun dun dun DUN dun.....

You know, we don't have to use ((OOC)) since this is the OOC topic. And not that many people here have read the book, so it would be good if someone created a human or Thark character.

The Martian Overlords will also be using crystal eggs and the wing contraptions from the short story The Crystal Egg by H.G. Wells. For those of you unaware of the story, I'll give you the brief version. A guy finds this egg-shaped crystal. He looks inside it and can see Mars. There are a bunch of other crystal eggs atop these pillars. Martian Overlords(apparently) are using these artificial wings to fly around and look into the eggs. The wing contraptions are vaguely described, so they could look like delicate, beautiful, red butterfly wings with intricate patterns on them. Or they could be plain old fin-wings, like from DaVinci's glider. Maybe they're like insect wings. So anyway, back to the crystal eggs. They're like webcams. You look into one crystal egg, you see out the other. And anyone on the other side can peer into that crystal egg and see you. So I assume that they're very valuable. I think that there's one crystal egg for every cylinder. Either that, or the Martians are using those telepathic communication devices from the game intro to radio home. For now, let's stick with telepathy, because it's actually explicable. I don't know how exactly a crystal egg would work. Maybe it has some sort of telepathic field around it, like the crystal skull in Indy 4. I dunno. The crystal eggs seem like they belong in Out of the Silent Planet. They're too vague and mystical. But they are clearly used by the Martians, we know that for sure. So we probably won't use them in the RP. We might, but probably not. Perhaps the crystal eggs were stolen from the Tharks. Which Seems Unlikely. The wing contraptions were probably too delicate or rare to bring aboard the cylinders, because they're never mentioned in TWOTW. Or maybe it's because they were merely used as a form of transportation, and were not designed for warfare. They would leave the user exposed and largely unprotected. Bringing the wing contraptions to Earth would be like bringing a bicycle to a tank fight. Anyway, that's my explanation. What do you guys think?

I like it and I think that the crystal eggs are probably one big camera/screen. That is, the surface is.

Nnnno. That doesn't sound like what the Martians would be able to do. So, anyway. Gunner, can you create a character? Preferably one of Raka's and Oorl's ship-mates?

It wouldn't have if you had just used a hyphen and said, "engineer-like char," but that's beside the point.
To clarify further on King and mine's roles, I control everything that's on and related to Mars, and UFO King controls everything else. I wanted me and King to divide up the roles of GM evenly, but noooo. He gets Earth, Venus, and the moon, and all I get is Mars. He was reluctant even to give me control of all of Mars, and says that I only get control of it because I'm playing as the Supreme Martian Overlord. I actually obsess and know more about the book(s) than he does. I was the one that read it first. I was the one to join several forums related to it. I was the one that ordered the graphic novels, and I was the one that read and bought all the spin-offs. I am better at this than he is. I have obsessed over every single tiny detail in TWOTW and every single other piece of literature related to it. King? He's just read the book and the spin-offs and such. If things were fair, I would be the GM. I would have started this topic. And I would be acknowledged as the bigger fan.
I AM A BIGGER FAN OF H.G. WELLS' THE WAR OF THE WORLDS THAN MY ROOMMATE UFO KING IS AND HE IS BEING UNFAIR BY NOT LETTING ME BE THE GM!!!
Pleeeeeeeeeaaasssse? Will you let me be the GM? Pretty please?

Fine, fine. I know you are a much bigger fan, but that does not give you the right to be the GM by yelling something you would expect from a spammer. If it will make you stop, then you can be the GM. Now stop whining/spamming. Jesus! >:(

Thanks, but you don't have to be so grumpy about it.
Now let's stop flaming and get back on topic. We have Xeno's guy, Raka, and Oorl. We need two more Martians. Gunner, you've read the book, I presume. Are you up for making a character?

EDIT: Xeno, where's your character? And where's Gunner? Hasn't anyone else read the book?
...
*sigh*
Do any of you guys that are neither Xeno nor Gunner that like to roleplay but haven't read the book need me to give you a summary of it?

Basically, you get to play as aliens in Striders with lazor beams.  And cans of poisonous gas.

Kill all humans, harvest their blood.  With crab machines with tentacles.  And cages.

Did I mention the foghorns?
