Looks like AMD may have cheaped out in the wrong way with their new line of cards, exceeding the PCI-e energy consumption specification. A few people were saying if they'd just used a slightly more expensive connector, rather than opting for the cheap ones, the problem wouldn't have happened.

Thing ends up pulling nearly the same amount of wattage as the Nvidia 1080 series, which is significantly more powerful.

But this AMD card. You need the "extreme" style motherboards because the damn thing sucks so much power that standard-style boards can't deliver enough power consistently to all the components. For a ****ing nice mid-tier card. Ugh... oh AMD what have you been doing lately? Nvidia is gonna kill you if you don't stop the bleeding soon.

This is a pretty nifty series of card for anyone looking to do a inexpensive build. Looks nice! Nvidia are wrecking the place up, it seems.

Hey I'm having PC issues. My GPU usage is fairly workable when I first open up my computer, but eventually something will trip it up and it will start going into a spiral of constant spikes, freezing my computer for a split-second every few seconds.

I have an NVidia Geforce GTX 660.



Here's an image of it ripped from MSI Afterburner, where you can see a visual representation of what I mean. You can see the "normal" part of it functioning at the beginning, and then it starting to spike. Each one of those spikes represents a small freeze of maybe somewhere from an eighth to a quarter of a second.

I took my graphics card out and gave it a dust cleaning, which fixed the problem for about an hour and a half before it started up again.

I suspect this is just my graphics card aging and accumulating problems- at this point, it's a few years old. If it isn't, though, and somebody here recognizes this problem and has some sort of solution, I'd love to hear it.

I'll have to show you the system I've been working on at some point. It has been a few years in the making, buying parts here and there. But I never really got into the hardcore bits that will go obsolete super quickly.

This case I got, fuuuuuuuuuudge it is nice. Aluminum Micro-ATX tower with tempered glass sides. This thing is so HOT. It's the sexiest case I've ever had and I have bought some real lookers. For this build I am finally out of my Full Tower phase and am trying to build a very strong desktop as small as possible. I  generally go very utilitarian with my parts and only get what is functional and leave form to the background, but this time I decided to go for some real, sexy form.

Found a plat-certified 850watt power supply that fits in there beautifully and, here's the best part: totally modular.

My current setup is the most Frankenstein's Monster rig I've ever had. But it screams. Good stuff. I have a single GTX 1060 in there, which I can highly highly recommend. The 1060 has been a phenomenal card and I will probably drop a second one in here on the cheap just because. My goal is to get something in the 20XX line when they become a bit cheaper and hop onto the next generation of Intel chips. Granted this virus has put a damper on that somewhat, but we'll make it work.

Our tech has been getting so good that I can wait longer and longer to build new systems.

On that subject though, I know Yokto has a pretty solid setup. I want to know more about that if you have the time to post about it, sir.

I picked up a Intel i9 10850k for about 300 under sticker price. So I will build out around this processor. It seems like a good choice and is cheaper than the 10900k variant, but I can adjust my cores up to negate the difference of the "better" chip. And I probably won't bother to push it that far anyway. 4GHz seems like plenty.

I found some really nice memory modules from G.Skill, a company I have had good experiences with across several builds. Since I can focus more on form with this build, I went with their Trident Royal series. Look them up and you will figure out why just by looking at them.

Cooling for the CPU in a build this small is as important as ever. I have found some newer coolers that are impressive. Water coolers that are a far cry from my first water-cooled system fifteen years ago. That tech has become very consumer friendly and mostly idiot-proof.

The video card is really the only question. I have an old 1060 that is still pretty great, but I think I would like something newer to keep up with the other hardware. But it is very nice building for CPU power as opposed to GPU power. The 2070 Super looked good though. But I probably don't need something like that.

Gotta be able to play my low-graphics 4x strategy games with 50 AI opponents.

Yes okay! I got it all put together and running.

And I was able to break away from Windows too, which is nice. Now I'm going to consider dual booting which should not pose much of a problem but I'm still unsure if that's what I want to do. The biggest hitch I ran into this time around (and there's always something) was inexplicable lack of keyboard and mouse support on my Windows install. All that despite having the USB 3 drivers installed and ready to go. And that issue is what pushed me to install something else that would work. Normally I'd have had a PS/2 keyboard and mouse on standby just for this sort of thing but I never took them with me when I moved and this outcome frankly went over my head.

But it's all dealt with and working so that's done. Phew.

Now I just need to bide my time and wait for a good deal on a powerful video card.

Yes, cryptofags have ruined everything. You can't get GPUs, you can't get CPUs and if you do find them the price is inflated to a ridiculous degree. When you go on a website that sells computer parts like Newegg you see them demeaning themselves and reselling used hardware. ****ing used hardware!! Pathetic.

Crypto miners need to be thrown off the roof.
