Everything Else / Picked up a neat apprenticeship!
« on: April 14, 2021, 07:11:42 pm »
I was talking to a guy at the club earlier this week and he was telling me he needed help cleaning coal furnaces. And it seemed interesting and I had the extra time, so I figured I'd pick it up. He's got a lot of experience in the field and I'm pretty hyped to learn something new. Should be a good time!

Hallelujah! I have witnessed Him. Yes. God bless.

Everything Else / Anyone archived Steve's podcasts?
« on: March 29, 2021, 01:46:23 pm »
That old Gaming Steve Show was the tits and the ass back in the day. Lots of neat insights on things and way ahead of the curve.

Anyone archived the show? I might get around to doing it, but maybe someone else has. Food for thought!

PC Games / Cruelty Squad - Now with 100% more fishing!
« on: March 13, 2021, 07:04:41 am »
Let me tell you about Cruelty Squad.

**** YOU.

That's Cruelty Squad. It's a terrible looking game with painful audio and excellent gameplay. This game is the ****. It's hilarious to play while simultaneously being a chore. It's basically like playing a JRPG or Dwarf Fortress. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes good games.

<a href="" target="_blank"></a>
It is still in early access and it's one of the rare early access games I would recommend considering the field is so consumed with absolute trash and derivative titles you played 20 years ago. But if you don't get it today, maybe in a month or two. By then there may even be more fishing and maybe even gameplay! :D

<a href="" target="_blank"></a>

This looks pretty darn good. I like the more open concept of the design, even if it still uses the same awful controls that 3D World had. I'm definitely going to consider getting this again. And 3D World isn't awful, just flawed in a nonsensical way. You might enjoy it!

Everything Else / I'm not saying I have a family tied up in my basement.

But if I did, they'd definitely be in my basement and not in the living room or the kitchen.

Everything Else / Hooray it's a new yeah!

So last year ended up being pretty good, all things considered. Made a lot of progress and accomplished many goals; the adversity only making them more worthwhile to attain. So I'm really looking forward to this new year. What goals and plans do you hope to accomplish with this one and how will you end it better than you started it?

So you know when you've waited years for a game and it comes out and the result is a buggy, sloppy mess? I hope they can patch a lot of this stuff out as quickly as possible. But a lot of the pre-release communication from the developers was concerning. Especially the comments about there being bugs that the developers are aware of. I hate day-one patches, especially when the game itself is already SEVENTY GIGS. Jesus Christ that's a huge file size.

I don't know... I guess you'd think after such a long time in development that the game would come out in a pretty decent condition. But I've watched a bunch of streams of the game over the last week and change and each one presents more and more odd bugs and strange behavior in the game's engine that I really didn't expect from CDPR. As buggy as Witcher 1 or Witcher 3 were, those games weren't anywhere near this bad when they came out.

You've got an outrageous range of NPC health anomalies from extremely weak enemies to immortals. Props and NPCs flying off the map and hovering up through the ceiling to their doom. Partner and player character animations that absolutely should have been smoothed out before shipping. It's really really weird. A lot of it seems like at some point within the last year or two something happened and the development team had to change course drastically in several of the game's key areas, resulting in a lot of rough edges.

Rumor is the day-one patch is going to be around forty gigs. FORTY. Fuuuuuuck!!

I'll definitely be sitting this one out and waiting for a Game of the Year edition. I don't care how enticing "penis 2" is.

Console Games / Commandos 2 is on the Switch? Neat!
« on: December 05, 2020, 07:42:11 am »
Picked this up last night when I saw it on the Switch's news feed. Plays pretty good, looks pretty good, and is as hard as I remember.

This is one of those types of games that I wish we could have more of. Sort of like the older (and better) Resident Evil games where they use a slightly obtuse control scheme to make you focus more on the game. It ends up paying off in the long run. I really like the Commandos games, even if they're a real challenge to get through.

Console Games / Pokemon Sword/Shield - Here we go...
« on: November 29, 2020, 09:05:14 pm »
So where to start with these games. I really want to like them. And I do not hate them. I got Shield and it's... fine. It's very fine for a game. I guess.

But you know, it's one of those games that has a long history. And I've played a lot of the older games, though not all of them. I skip every generation, sometimes two or three. Depends how I feel. And playing Pokemon Shield I am really getting this feeling that this is a Game Boy Advance game with fancy graphics. Like, mechanically this game is clunky and obtuse and plays exactly like Pokemon did two decades ago. And that is not a compliment. The way battles flow is awful; there's no excuse for there to be so many phases between attacks, status effects, information about impacts of attacks/status effects, and enemy reactions. It's just god damn awful. This all could have been streamlined and I feel like it wouldn't be that big of an ordeal; especially when you consider that Game Freak lied about spending all that time creating high quality assets for each Pokemon. So what else were they doing? Besides building a very okay game?

A lot of my gripes with this game come down to the way information is given to the player in combat. It pads out the overall experience in the worst kind of way. You could easily have an attack, its damage, and any additional effects happen with one screen worth of information as opposed to breaking three actions up over five screens. They've had 25 years to improve this system. I dunno man.

I'll keep playing it, the game is fun enough. But some simple tweaks could have made it a lot better. And also I'm not super keen on the setting. The Galar region is kind of meh. And the Gen VIII music is really mediocre. I don't know what they're trying to go for but the Game Boy had far better music than this game. Everything in the new game feels overproduced and some of the battle themes are a mess of sound. It's just noise with techno bips and bops thrown in at random intervals.

Very okay game.

Everything Else / Just got over COVID again!
« on: November 29, 2020, 11:06:34 am »
Feeling pretty good today; got a few days left on quarantine and otherwise I'll be done with my second round of COVID. Was about the same as the first time, which is to say I've had hangovers worse than this. Really looking forward to getting back to work and hoping the morons at the statehouse don't do another unnecessary shutdown.

I've got so many projects at work that are just sitting that I could have had completed a week and a half ago. Remember to take your vitamin D3! And don't let the whore media scare you into hiding. Unless you're in one of the risk categories (old, fat, smoker) you don't have much to worry about. Stand up and be strong! We'll get through this no problem; take it from me, I have had it twice. And if you are fat or a smoker, take the opportunity to better yourself. It's worth it and so are you.
