Necrox' 33 Creatures (UPDATE: Winged Stoy)
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:32:41 am »

(Click for larger version)
...yes I made these letters too :)

Hi all!
Here I will post my darlings as I create them. Feel free to comment along the way :) Oh and it doesn't have to be positive comments, as long as it's constructive criticism ;)

My very very first creature ever, created from the very first blob I was given the very first time I loaded the program (you get the idea):

The Butonidon #1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFANbzkJtSg

The Butonidons are a mostly peaceful race, but they are very protective. They will not actively look for war and conflict, but if conflict is upon them you will find fierce and capable fighters defending their homes and families to the very end.
It takes time and effort to gain their trust, and you will not be welcomed into their tribe straight away. But if you are persistent, honourable and peaceful, your presence may be accepted in their territory eventually. And once they call you friend, you are also family.

The Slontinar #2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elcVsHkjwOw

More exotic (otherworldly) than the Butonidon, but less focus on being cute and loveable. The focus here was to see if I could make something weird but still cool.
This friendly omnivore is not much of a hunter. Basically he only eats roadkill - whatever he stepped on by accident with his clumsy feet. He is dullwitted and fairly slow moving, but what he doesn't have in those departments, he makes up for in sheer height. His diet consists mainly of leaves and fruit - and creatures who might *look* like leaves or fruit. They often end up in gigantic fights with the Walking Tree, entirely by accident.

Hehe yeah, he's a bit of a tricky bugger. He is definately not created to be a merciless killer but on the other hand, his looks and colour can be decieving. If he or his tribe is threatened, those arms can uproot a mature Orgon tree with ease - and you don't want to be where THAT lands ;)

The Monoki #3

http://www.youtube.com/v/411fDK2OkoQ

The Monoki was supposed to be a cute, furry, small monopod. Sort of like a kangaroo rat with only one leg, in essence but not precisely. However, I completely forgot about the "small" until he was almost done and then it was too late :P Meh.

Monoki's are pack animals. They are omnivores and their diet consist of certain leaves, fruits and meat they can scavenge. They don't actively hunt, unless a very weak prey avails itself to a pack. Often they will instead attempt to overrun a larger predator who's taken down fresh prey, and scare it away with loud noise and great numbers. If the predator is persistent and they don't succeed however, they will rarely stand and fight but instead run away and leave a hidden scout to wait for the predator to finish. The scout will usually be the alpha, and he will call the rest if there is enough meat left for more than what he needs; he will however only take what he NEEDS, and leave the rest. If however there are pregnant individuals in the flock, he will often let them feast before him.

The Skroot #4

http://www.youtube.com/v/CqD8PKqzZDk

The skroot was inspired by the blast-ended skrewt of the Harry Potter books - or at least the name and idea of having the end of it be an exploding ball of toxic slime.
The scroot is a very large insectoid being. It will probably never evolve beyond the creature stage as it is already very evolved, but has no hands or grabbers. Scroots are carnivores and survive by being well camouflaged to blend into leafy, grassy underbrush. Should it be spotted by another larger carnivore, it relies on its many spikes and pointy spines to make it an unappetizing meal to would-be predators. If all else fails it can explode its "tail" in cloud of vile, toxic goo, which will cause intense pain and burn the attacker. The exploding backside is mostly a defensive mechanism. For hunting they will mainly use their strong and spiky mandibles as a weapon to lacerate or crush the prey.

The Phatassosaurus #5

http://www.youtube.com/v/0wNyX9813eU

I don't have much description of the Phatassosaurus so far, but the idea was to make a big creature that would work as epic as well, and I think this one will... and the hatchlings are adorable! Awww ^^ (they're at the end of the video)

The Deep Quinquepod #6

http://www.youtube.com/v/Hbj6lcVogRw

This is one freaky little thing. I just wanted to make something completely strange, so that's what I've done.
I've come to the conclusion that is must be a cold-blooded amphibian which lives deep down in caves with underwater lakes. It has huge eyes to catch any reflection created by the photophores in its partly bioluminescent skin. Much like a bat uses sonar, it uses bioluminescent flashes at regular intervals to illuminate the immediate surroundings in the caves and cool crystal clear water, in order to locate prey and navigate. It has little use for camouflage, as it is by far the largest predator in its environment and the light from it's bio-flashes also dazzle and disorient most prey in the lightless surroundings. Its tentacle grabber serves as a far reaching weapon and all-round tool.

The Blot #7

http://www.youtube.com/v/d3Ie2-tdTHE

The Blot was born out of boredom. I just wanted to make something with the tiniest possible body, and which was a normal bipedal homanoid. Behold the result! Blot. I have no silly story for him. He is purple :p

The Walking Tree #9

The Walking Tree is the granddaddy of walking sticks. Duh :P He's as tall as I could make him, so he's one of the larger creatures you can stumble across... or who can stumble across you, more likely.

Most of his day is spent standing still, simulating the local foliage. When they move their gigantic bodies, it is in slow, jerky movements much like chameleons. They will generally only move if in danger, breeding or feeding. Their diet consists mainly of photosynthesis and larger bug creatures and smaller creatures of all kinds who might walk between its legs. By standing still and absorbing the suns rays through its large "wings" (which in reality are more like solar panels and has no flight function), this coldblooded (sapped?) creature can conserve energy for days or weeks without meals. When one finally chances beneath it, it drops its massive weight in an instant, crushing or impaling the creature with its mandibles.

Thank you both! ^^ The Gritch got popular as soon as I uploaded it, and I've gotten positive feedback on the Skroot as well (though that's the one I like the least myself). It seems people like creepy bugs? :p I prefer the more cutesy stuff myself, though I have seen some really awesome bugs other places as well.

The Kobold #12

The Goblin #13

These are loosely based on artwork and description of those monsters in D&D, 4th Edition. I made them as an experiment; I just started running a D&D campaign, and my idea is to bring up the creature whenever the group comes across one ^^ I might end up with the entire Monsters Manual in here :P

Both Kobolds and Goblins are cowardly beings, lyhing in ambushes, picking their prey, and only attacking in groups. You will often see them running away if odds are not looking good during a battle.

NOTE!
The Walking Tree and The Slotinar has had their descriptions updated!

The King Siarc #14

The King Siarc is much like the fabled "Rat Kings" of urban cities, except these have evolved into being born as a collective of individuals, fused into one body. Dangerous to only the slowest prey on land, but higly intelligent and deadly in its watery element.

The Aurudactyl #17

A species of golden-feathered dinosaur, named for its protruding "fingers" and the colour of its coat. Aurudactyls are technically omnivores but primarily they eat meat; they are scavengers and pack hunters. They are rarely seen in groups of less than 3, and almost never alone. As a species, they are social and take care of not just their own young but the whole flocks. Though they may not look it, they are ferocious fighters and will never back down.

The Scyton #18

http://www.youtube.com/v/6FxeUyIBFYg

This one is my favourite so far. He's the one I've spent the most time on, though it might not be imediately apparent from looking. I've spent a lot of time tweaking him so he looked like something I thought was cool, at the same time as getting optimum stats, without cheating. I've also spent a long time tweaking him so the animations are really good at the same time.
The only thing I'm not quite sure about is the colouring, so any feedback would be appreciated. I've spent literally hours coming up with that look, but I'm not sure it's the best I can do with this thing.

Description
The Scyton is a (very) distant cousin to the King Siarc, and a much more evolved one. While not inherrently evil, their capacity for destruction is truly awe-inspiring. The concept "survial of the fittest" make these little monsters natures A+ student - and places them firmly at the top of the food chain. They excel in soundless movement, can sprint great distances, leap to incredible heights and are masters of combat.

After a long week of inactivity, I give you:

The Torqodon #19

This guy was made because I felt like making something bulky and more menacing after seeing the Diablo 3 trailer, so I attempted to make something in the Diablo franchise's approximate style (I stress "approximate"). I found the most difficult part as always was making an non-cute looking face that wasn't a bug.

Really nice creatures, especially this most recent one. Making non-cute faces is kind of easy for me. It's making Cute-Faces I sometimes have difficulty with. There is a Flesh-like texture... I forget which one it is exactly but I used it for my Fleshaden.

Thank you :) What I mean is if you use the standard mouthes - which are not for insects - the result is too often cute looking. Sometimes not in a static image, but then instead when animated, because it smiles in an adorable way or something. I would like a function to choose the general disposition of the creature - whether it is usually mean and aggressive in its animation - or happy and benign (or a mix).

Today's creature is...

The Twitter #20

http://www.youtube.com/v/17lwnsyxCSw

This one is supposed to be cute. I wanted to make a porcupine-inspired animal that can explode in a hail of quills in all directions - which is exactly what this guy can. As the work progressed I got the idea of obfuscating his actual body inside the armor with black, which had the amusing side-effect of reminding me of Marvin the Martian ;D

Thank you ^^ I think it's interesting to see what people likes, because most people seem to pick different creatures for their favourites, it's hard to find a pattern and say "this one is good". I had a look at your own creatures as well, there's some really cool ones in between as well :)
I really wish Maxis would make stats for the creatures on sporepedia soon, so we can see how many positive and negative notes each is getting specifically.

I'm considering starting the first playthrough with only my own and Maxis' creatures to choose from for the game, just to see how weird it feels to be playing a game I've populated myself! Then after 5 minutes when I'm weirded out by it, I'll let it download other people's ;)

Thank you Darcie :) Yes I have thought about it, I just didn't think there was much interest in it, since many others have done something similar (like the gaming steve sporified thread). I might still do it, it's just very time consuming so it will be a slow process. Each creature doesn't take long as such, but the trick is to make them varied in both appearance and paint job; that's what takes time when it's so many :)
I've made "S" already, does that help? :P

If I do end up making them, I'll be sure to post them here :)

The Veilfish #24

[/quote]

http://www.youtube.com/v/qgB-kawEFyU

This one is a floater intended to be a fish. It was a bit of an experiment in using the way the CC merges the mesh of intersecting limbs to create a fin/veil like quality. The pictures don't show it well so if you're interested, please have a look at the video. The movement animated surprisingly well and while definately not perfect, I'm pretty pleased with the result for a silly test like this :) The video actually shows the creature off far better than the pictures, as the "veil" is not apparant in the snaps.
Have a look and let me know what you think :)

PS: For some reason the sound is screwed up and totally out of sync. Just ignore it.

The veilfish looks great. Too bad it can't be a water creature...

The Muffle #25

This was originally made to show the CC to a friend, and demonstrate some of the silly gravity-defying things you can make in it. However, he took shape as we progressed, and I decided to finish him up the next day because he turned out kinda cute ^^

Thanks guys! :) I'll make sure to upload some more when I've made something I'm happy with. Only 26 creatures have found their way here so far but really I've made like 50 :P

You have some fantastic designs. I think you should make some more 'mean' type creatures because your Torqodon is great :D The more you practice the easier it will get :P

I try but they just end up cute! ^^ I start out by having something menacing in mind, but then along the way I can't help making it like that :P

WOW, well done! He looks really good. Very spindly. I like your stuff, some of it is very surreal. Keep up the good work!

Hehe no it's definately not always bad, I like my cute creatures :) But there's a big "demand" for more nasty looking ones too. It's just  lot harder to make in my oppinion. Even the most evil looking parts end up with an endearing quality :p

You may be right. I had a hard time finding a propper "ending" so to speak ;) I guess I was just tired at the time and bailed out. I will re-evaluate it when I have the time :)

The Zlimanup #29

The Jellybuttons were supposed to be spitters, but I ran out of complexity points, and there wasn't really anything that big I wanted to remove.

Oh wow, I like this one!

You need a link to your sporepedia in your signature. I had to do a search to find it. :P

edit: It's not on your page, did you upload it? If not, please do.

Hehe it's funny, I was actually kinda thinking of your creatures when I was making it - as in, you mentioned something about your Mallen being on a swamp world at some point, and I thought I'd make some creatures for that kind of environment :) I have another one but it's not as good and needs some tweaking.
I thought I'd uploaded this one, but I might not have. I'll check when I get home :)

Oh NOES! You had to SEARCH??? Poor widdle yuu! :P
Okok, I'll add it ^^

Turns out I HAD uploaded it.
I had clicked upload and the game saw it as being uploaded, but it hadn't entered my profile regardless. So I tried altering it a bit, saving, and then uploading again: Nothing. Again my game says it's uploaded, but nothing has appeared on sporepedia.
It must be the complexity meter that's screwing up, I remember hearing other people having similar reports after the patch; that a creature that's OK in CC isn't being uploaded to the live DB.

I tried removing the inner mouth and uploading it; it worked :/ I don't really want to sacrifice that mouth though, but it seems I'll have to. I can't see what else to remove. I tried removing 3 armor plates, but that wasn't enough.

So anyway... it's uploaded now. Only just with 1 mouth.

Note: This guy does NOT animate well, but I wanted to upload him anyway because I instantly loved him as soon as he started taking shape

Try taking the tags off and if that doesn't work, then leave one tag in. That's happened to me alot and it works. I'd rather see it as the original you made. Just try it and see if that works.

It's a shame he doesn't animate very well. I may be able to redo him in another way so he does, I'll have to see about that.

UPDATE
I've deleted my letter-creatures from my spore.com profile. I can make them available here on request, but I don't want to foul up peoples games with silly letters just because they've added me as a buddy :)

Good thinking. I wouldn't mind anyway, as long as they animate and aren't "floating castle" or something like that.
