Diablo III to be Announced This Week

blizzard_splash_page.jpg

If you visit the Blizzard website right now you'll get a strange splash page depicting ice with some runes. People throughout the Internet are speculating what this could mean ... perhaps Blizzard will be announcing a new game? Perhaps the long awaited Lost Vikings sequel will be announced this week at the Worldwide Invitational in Paris?

Well it's quite simple, it's exactly what everyone is hoping/think it's going to be.

Blizzard is going to formally announce they are developing Diablo III this week at the Worldwide Invitational in Paris (or D3 they like to call it).

In fact, much like Starcraft II , Blizzard has been hard at work on D3 for several years and people will quite surprised at just how far along they are with the development of D3. Again, like Starcraft II, D3 will have greatly enhanced graphics, updated gameplay, new classes, and will continue to tell the story of the struggle between the agents of Heaven and Hell (sure that's pretty vague, but it's D3 is D2 with enhanced graphics and updated gameplay, what more do you need to know?).

But when will it come out? Right now from what I understand the loose release schedule is as follows. World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King is to be released by the end of 2008. StarCraft II will be released towards the end of 2009. And Diablo III is aiming to be released by the end of 2010, but I would expect D3 to be delayed until at least 2011.

So all of those who have been patiently waiting for a sequel to Diablo will finally have their prayers answered this week ... and then will have to wait several more years. Well at least Starcraft II should be out to hold those starved D3 fans over.

My bet is on a Wrath of the Lich King announcement because this thing is a Warcraft rune.

Posted by FTH at June 24, 2008 4:10 PM

That's fantastic, even though you had to sit on that news for a few years. I'm afraid I will like it too much (aka obsession).

Posted by Robert Gauss at June 24, 2008 4:10 PM

Hurray for more diablo. I am curious as to what the aesthetics look and feel like.

Posted by lemurbouy at June 24, 2008 5:08 PM

Starcraft II towards the end of 2009? I doubt Blizzard will wait THAT long.

FTH: The runes on the picture are from Diablo.

Posted by Theodor Stake at June 24, 2008 6:03 PM

Ehmmm..not to be too big a partypooper or anything, but here's my thoughtprocess:

Blue....ice...? Runes...Nordic...? Northrend...? Lich King???

I mean seriously! What's the title gonna be:

"Diablo III : When Hell Freezes Over" ?

Posted by Seb at June 24, 2008 9:14 PM

Oh, and BTW....just go to:

http://www.wow-europe.com/wrath/

scroll to the bottom, see that ice? see those runes..? yeah... =\

Posted by Seb at June 24, 2008 9:18 PM

Way to "hold it" until thousands of fans have already come to that conclusion on diablofans.com, among other places.

Posted by MV at June 25, 2008 1:23 AM

Well I'm a huge fan of the Diablo universe and have been playing both games of the series on and off for about 6 years. I would really like to see a third installation to the game after all of the hype, though there isn't THAT much evidence to support it yet.

Though I have to agree with "Fan" - it seems as if you haven't done very much research into the matter and that you are likely just guessing, much like the rest of us.

It would be funny, though, if you're wrong and lost all credibility.

Posted by Jeremy Hoffart at June 25, 2008 2:10 AM

Okay all you did was make generalized, vague statements. It seems to me you pulled these release dates out of your ass and are just assuming its going to be Diablo 3. You have NO proof ZERO. I love the Diablo franchise but if your wrong I'd laugh my ass off, you would lose all credibility. Please do the gaming community a favor and stop trying to drive traffic and hype.

PS: To all those saying its WoW get your head out of your ass the first one is from WoW but the second one is clearly a Diablo rune. I would not be surprised to see items from all 3 franchises in the ice once the week is out. Plus WotLK was already announced. Dim-wits.

Posted by Alex at June 25, 2008 2:54 AM

To all of you, who are bashing GamingSteve, he knows much more than any of you about certain games. He was also who posted some information about D3 two years ago with the hell vs heaven thing.

Get your facts straight! Before you begin to bash someone.

Posted by Martin at June 25, 2008 3:45 AM

I don't know where these Steve bashers came from, but they need to go away now.

Posted by Sketchrob at June 25, 2008 4:25 AM

I'd like to come to the defence of Steve as well.

If you guys had been following his podcasts and news, you would know that he has friends within Blizzard, and have dropped hints about D3 before any other on several occations. But of course like any other he can't reveal too many details because then we have his friends fired and NDA scandal etc. etc.
Generally when Steve says something about a Blizz product it comes true. The times where it doesn't his statements were still solid, Blizzard just changed their stance later - early information is often changed at a later date.

I can understand people who don't know this page well will have problems accepting his word as law, but those who have followed the podcasts and news here for a while, will generally be aware that he rarely comes up with statements like that without being able to back it up; if it wasn't for NDA's.

My first guess was WOTLK, but if I had to put my money on a bet, I would trust Steve before my intuition. I haven't got years of experience in the industry, and I haven't got acquaintances at Blizz.

Posted by Necrox at June 25, 2008 5:35 AM

For all those that listen to the podcast and know what an honest and credible source Steve is this is an awesome bit of news.

The best bit is, a lot of people are going to think this is baloney and ignore it..! Websites like Joystiq.com won't pick up on this because they don't realise Steve's connections. We heard it here first, I've already told everyone I know, Steve is like our own personal insider!

I can't wait until Saturday!

Posted by Ben Furneaux at June 25, 2008 6:48 AM

On the last splash there are 3 runes :
first rune : rune on Frostmourne (sword) >> WarCraft
second rune : Hel rune >> Diablo 2 LoD
third rune : Protoss symbol >> StarCraft

All univers are present, but I hope D3 will be announce in WWI.

Posted by Scarbito at June 25, 2008 7:33 AM

Scarbito, excellent observation!
Plus when I got re-directed to the Blizzard site, what did I have staring me in the face?? This:

Hot Job – Lead 3D Environment Artist
Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of Diablo and Diablo II, is looking for a lead 3D environment artist skilled at creating models and texture maps for both architectural and natural environments. The ideal candidate has experience modeling and texturing assets for a diverse visual range of environments.

So chances are, that something about each of the franchises WILL be presented.

Posted by Seb at June 25, 2008 7:45 AM

The Steve-critics don't realize one thing. If they were suddenly aware of a major Blizzard project themselves, leaking the news would jeopardize the business strategy and you would most likely be sued for millions. It's all business, legal, and NDAs. It's something we should all take seriously if participating in an open or public beta test. There is a good chance that some type of nondisclosure is part of your participation, so read the agreement before clicking "OK."

Posted by Robert Gauss at June 25, 2008 10:09 AM

3 runes.... Third installation?

Ice melting... The ice that keeps hell shackled?

The top rune is from D2, called HEL.

Posted by Linus Magnell at June 25, 2008 10:26 AM

Since the 3 Blizzard universes have been shown (Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft), I fear it might be the announcement of Blizzard's promised new universe.

Mind you, a new Blizzard franchise would be nice, but I'd much prefer Diablo III (as long as it's not a paid MMO, that is).

Posted by Sonny at June 25, 2008 10:26 AM

God I hope it's not a D3 announcement, just so you end up looking like an amateurish fool.

Posted by jimmy at June 25, 2008 10:32 AM

Where the hell do you people get that it it is a hint at Diablo 3 announcement? It has ice and runes from the Frostmourne upon it. What does that have to do with Diablo 3? It has a hell of a lot to do with the WoW expansion, but jack with Diablo 3.

Posted by Lucero Jaurez at June 25, 2008 11:39 AM

Knowing Blizz it means nothing until they decide what it means. It can be anything. Seeing as Diablo has died twice and his brothers each once it is possible that Hell has frozen over if Diablo is back again. Could be a WoW thing since it is icy and it is mysterious and blue, so it could be SC2, something we don't know about it. Shock Blizz gave us nothing solid. Love those guys who come up with vague clues to spark imagination abound, even if it is cruel.

Posted by hawk88 at June 25, 2008 2:09 PM

That's so ridiculous, Smood. So utterly ludicrous that it defies all logic. You're telling me that I'm supposed to believe this is a hint of an imminent D3 announcement because of a single rune in an image that screams Warcraft? Yeah, right.

Posted by Lucero Jaurez at June 25, 2008 2:17 PM

First of all admit you're wrong you moron. The second rune is from Diablo 2 while the third is a starcraft symbol... your belief that it 'screams' warcraft is just your opinion. As you can see there are runes from all 3 games/worlds.

You want more proof? How about www.diabloii.net basically confirming it is Diablo 3? A reliable site that never spreads rumors.

"Diablo 3 Announcement at WWI

With this week's speculation over the Blizzard teasers, more and more reports in the media, and numerous tips coming direct us at IncGamers from reliable inside industry sources in the past 24 hours, we now have confirmation from inside sources to say that Diablo 3 WILL be announced on Saturday at WWI Paris 2008.

With that in mind, we would like to invite Diabloii.net readers to submit their questions for us to ask Blizzard.

This is extremely exciting for all of us here at Diabloii.net. For the past 10 years we have been supporting the Diablo community and to have something completely new to sink our teeth into is fantastic. We will be at the show on Saturday for the announcement and also the press conference which is directly after, so expect reports from the show floor live, interviews and much more."

Now make sure that when it turns out to Diablo 3 you come back on here and admit that you were fucking wrong... instead of sliding out like a little bitch. I know if it turns out to be something else I will own up to my mistake and admit it although Blizzard will have a huge numbers of loyal fans really pissed off at them.

And some more evidence:

"1. New Diablo Art
Blizzard has made completely new art of Diablo for their WWI logo, BlizzCon last year had old art and Diablo was in the back.

2. CSS names
Code:
/*.tundra {background:url(_images/04.jpg) no-repeat 0 0} */
/*.cavern {background:url(_images/15.jpg) no-repeat 0 0} */
/*.icy {background:url(_images/23.jpg) no-repeat 0 0} */

The hidden classes are named Tundra, Cavern and Icy, possibly after Drifter Cavern, Frozen Tundra and Icy Cellar in Act V of Diablo 2. A qualified guess is that the next names are among these: Pit, Cellar, Summit, Keep, Throne and Chamber.

3. diablo3.com
Diablo3.com previously pointed to diablofans.com, but was taken down on Monday. Blizzard is the owner of the domain so they took it down on purpose.

4. PR disaster
Imagine if they don't announce Diablo 3 on Saturday when everyone are expecting it, they would have a major PR problem. You would think Blizzard would release some kind of denial to soften the blow, and absolutely not hint for a Diablo game in the splash screen.

5. Job Ad
Blizzard has a job ad up with this intro:
Blizzard wrote:
Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of Diablo and Diablo II, is looking for a 3D environment artist skilled at creating models and texture maps for both objects and natural environments.

6. Birthday of Diablo II
Diablo 2 was released on June 29 2000. LoD on June 29 2001. WWI is June 28-29 2008.

Conclusion
Although nothing is 100% certain until Blizzard says so, the evidence is very strong, especially since Blizzard hasn't denied the rumors. There also seems to be something getting brighter behind the ice each day, bursting through, can it be a portal, or even Diablo himself?

Maybe it won't be Diablo 3 on Saturday, might be World of Diablo, or Realms of Diablo, especially with all the job openings for a next-gen MMO."

Posted by Smood at June 25, 2008 2:51 PM

There is a rune from each gaming universe they have created. Just go to diabloii.net to learn more about it. There is a Hel rune from Diablo II, a Protoss symbol from Starcraft, and a WoW symbol from Arthas' sword (that's what I'm told it is). So please, stop the stupid arguments and educate yourself before getting into it. Steve is the business and knows more than you. Period. End of Story. Get used to it.

Posted by Anon at June 25, 2008 4:02 PM

After reading both posts, I would conclude that Smood provides a much more professional and compelling argument than you, Lucero.

Go run back to World of Warcraft because in this case you're the real jackass.

Posted by Guest at June 25, 2008 5:53 PM

Leave the poor guy alone, hes obviously a figure of such importance that namecalling is the only way to refute information in an argument.

Posted by Guest at June 25, 2008 8:52 PM

Okay to Lucero stfu and go play WoW some more. And to Steve's supporters you basically screw yourself with the NDA argument. Who the hell would let some 2nd rate blogger inside on all the info and say HEY ITS CONFIRMED GUYS!!!!! if any magazine or publication did this they'd get their pants sued off. Im guessing they ignore steve because he has no real say in the gaming world.

Posted by Alex at June 25, 2008 10:35 PM

I think it's sad that comments on gamingsteve have become filled with so much malice. This play used to be fun to visit.

I'm fairly certain that the Steve bashers are all the same guy :p

Anyways, maybe this announcement will be enough to make Steve do a podcast....maybe? Remember what they are Steve?

The things where you go into your office and talk into a mic for 2 hours then post it on your site... :D

Posted by Selby at June 25, 2008 11:57 PM

It changed again today, and there is now a fourth rune in the bottom-right corner, though I have no idea what it is.

Another day, another few clues. I'm with Kotaku now. They say there's a nice chance it'll be Lost Vikings 3. God I'd love that. Read up on it yourself if you want, don't know if I'm allowed to post links.

Posted by FTH at June 26, 2008 8:29 AM

Found out about the new rune: It's something from Star Control. Lovely news, as it means that this awesome game isn't forgotten!

Posted by FTH at June 26, 2008 11:05 AM

Steve is late to the party, If he had given us this info a month ago it would've been cool. now it's just lame.

Sounds like he's trying to get some extra traffic by not calling it what it is, a rumour.

Probably true, but it's still just a rumour.

Posted by Munkatten at June 26, 2008 6:29 PM

Hey Steve, always a pleasure to hear something from you. Going by the unusually hostile posts in this thread, I can only surmise that you've been using your absence to piss some people off big time.
Though, as mentioned upthread, it's most likely one little Troll with too much time and multiple usernames.

What did you do Steve, kiss his momma?

Posted by Cruithne at June 26, 2008 6:38 PM

Stop bashing Steve and go do some research. Blizzard North started working on Diablo III right after they finished Diablo II/LOD. Unfortunately, a bunch of high ranked staff members left Blizzard North in 2003, and shortly after Blizzard North was shut down in 2005 and combined with Blizzard. So in fact, Blizzard has been working on Diablo III for potentially as far back as 2001 or even 2000.

Secondly, you know this is going to be a game announcement. It was confirmed by a staff at Blizzard in an interview. Also, last year prior to the SC2 announcement, Blizzard had a different splash screen each day that displayed their games in chronological order leading up to the big day. There were no clues as to what the revealed game was going to be. It's the same sort of thing again this time; each new rune/symbol that appears is only to portray each of their major franchises or games. You can even interpret it as showing their line of work in order again: the first icon that appeared is from Warcraft, the second is from Diablo, and the third is from Starcraft. I can't explain how today's would fit, but it doesn't matter. The point is that they are simply portraying all of their major franchises, and are not actually giving any real clues. There's no reason to reveal *anything*, not even a hint, until announcement day, and so far they've succeeded in that respect.

So the only real information we have right now is the advice and opinions of knowledgeable people with inside connections, such as Steve and Diabloii.net. I don't care for your analysis of the splash screen; it all means nothing until the big day, and if you were smart enough to not waste your time criticizing someone who obviously knows more than you do, you would have figured that out by now.

Posted by AzureKevin at June 26, 2008 10:50 PM

a fifth symbol now at the top-center. kinda looks like a snowflake.

Posted by Guest at June 27, 2008 3:31 AM

OK, there is at this point NO DENYING it.
This picture is Lich King...I mean seriously compare the splash pic with the one on

http://www.wow-europe.com/wrath/index.xml

But hey, doesn't mean we can't hope for a few new announcments anyway, right? Steve, good work, but I dont think u hit the bullseye this time...Shame. =\

Posted by Seb at June 27, 2008 7:08 AM

While I'm not going to jump on the Diablo 3 train just yet, much as I'd like too, why would Blizzard put together something like this just to announce the the release date of something we already know a fair about? WoW expansion seems unlikely...

Posted by shakaka36 at June 27, 2008 7:12 AM

they said that they will announce a new game and that the majority will celebrate it. that means -> no expansion / add-on for an existing title. but, its possible that the teaser picture has nothing to do with the new game announcement and just hints towards the lichking betaphase.. i just dont know, but im still crossing my fingers for a d3 announcement.

Posted by KL0k at June 27, 2008 7:59 AM

"stop bashing steve and do some research" -AzureKevin

^ Most of us have, that's why we're dissapointed.

Posted by Munkatten at June 27, 2008 10:29 AM

If you join the runes together, you'll see they form a pentegram.
If you look to the right, you'll see a distinct #3.

If you look at the Top and Bottom runes, I've heard the top is a Nordic compass of some sorts, and the bottom is a Lost Vikings symbol.

The Anniversary of D2 is this weekend, so it's also an ideal time for an announcement.

Posted by Anon at June 27, 2008 2:41 PM

Actually, this looks far more like a Protoss image... but hey, Steve NEVER was wrong so far...

Posted by FoxSpirit at June 27, 2008 4:44 PM

Edit: argh, this REALLY looks like the Lich King's eyes. But WTF?? They said they WILL announce a NEW game. The heat is on O.o

... so I trust Steve.

Posted by FoxSpirit at June 27, 2008 4:46 PM

Gaming Steve clearly knows more than any of us when it comes to insider gaming knowledge, I fully believe that he reckons this game will be announced but think about it.

Why hasnt Diablo III been done yet? I find it very hard to imagine what they would do too improve and expand the gameplay without losing the life and soul of the game. Now im not saying Steve is wrong but I just find it extremely hard to imagine what Diablo III could be. Im a massive fan of Blizzard (Diablo especially) so Im just going to sit back and see how it all pans out. A very exciting time indeed :D

But still deep down I dont see what Diablo III can bring to the table right now for it to be a major success apart from the legion of fans that pounce on any hint of a new game (like me). These guys are clever though and in Blizzard I trust, I just hope if this is indeed a confirmation of D3 that fans wont be let down T.T

Posted by Devro at June 27, 2008 8:49 PM

OK, let's assume you're 100% right, Steve. At this point, how does it affect Blizzard when you've leaked their announcement a few days before E3? Is that a violation of the NDA?

Posted by MOT at June 28, 2008 3:54 AM

I think Steve is on to something. I'm not 100% certain Blizzard will make the Diablo 3 announcement on Saturday. But the game is definitely in the works...

Posted by Tada at June 28, 2008 12:39 PM

As much as I enjoyed Steve when he gave two craps about his fans, giving him credit because he 'called Diablo 3' is like giving me credit because I say there will be another Halo, another GTA, and a dozen more Call of Duty and Guitar Hero games.

Posted by Dave at June 28, 2008 12:47 PM

Actually, no it isn't. It's like giving credit to someone who's in the game business who has many connections to other game businesses, and friends who actually work for the game business in question about the rumoured announcement.

Christ almighty people, he wouldn't say it if he didn't have some amount of certainty, as far as I'm concerned. GET OVER YOURSELVES.

Posted by Anon at June 28, 2008 12:54 PM

Blindly following anyone is never a good idea. On the other hand, trusting someone wth a proven track record of being right is perfectly reasonable.

It's one thing to voice scepticism, but when you insult someone and claim they don't know what they're talking about, only to be proved wrong, common courtesy would suggest an apology is in order.

Posted by Cruithne at June 28, 2008 2:06 PM

Steve was right - suck on you that lollipop loser.

Oh - and yeah... PODCAST PODCAST PODCAST!!!! We want more podcasts! Please :-)

Posted by Mark at July 2, 2008 9:55 AM

This isn't about wether or not steve was right.

Almost everyone thought there would be a new diablo game, and that it would be announced at this event.

Steve decides to claim that he has hard fact, that he KNOWS diablo 3 will be announced. Problem with this is that we only have his word for it, and he didn't say anything that hadn't been said before... heck... he didn't even predict anything specific at all.

I made the same prediction, but I call it what it is, rumour and speculation!

If steve had given us some information about the game, that was both unlikely to be predicted and unique to him... then I would never had said anything.

From what I've seen now, I have to say that steve is probably just trying to generate some traffic.

Posted by Munkatten at July 5, 2008 9:01 PM

@Munkatten Wow your cynicism is really depressing. Hey, healthy scepticism is always warranted, but Steve has always been right with Blizzard news. He's not going to go into the specifics of who said what, because that would ruin careers. He's the one who broke the news of the earlier version of Diablo 3 being scrapped, and he was right when everyone was sceptical. When he is talking about speculation and rumour he makes sure to say they are speculation or rumour. In this post he said Diablo 3 will definitely be announced, and he was right.

Oh, and the only one generating traffic are sceptics/trolls like yourself calling people names and showing blatant disrepect to Steve.

Posted by clee at July 13, 2008 7:47 AM

@ Munkatten - Simply to generate traffic? Steve obviously has this place as a side project, he doesn't make much money off it and if he really wanted to generate traffic he would do more podcasts. The fact is that your one of those jealous little kids that second guess every major event thinking they know something about the gaming world. When you call it wrong you simply forget about it, when something big and blatant is called and right you think you know it all. Steve wouldn't have given any more information even if he could, its called confidentiality and if he wants to remain friends with people in the industry he wouldn't mess up their press launches.

Your a pathetic little loser mate, people like you arent wanted here.
