Rumor: GoldenEye, Other Rare Games Headed to Xbox Live Arcade?

Goldeneye 007

Citing “very reliable sources” and “seeing evidence themselves”, Xbox Evolved is claiming that Rare's Goldeneye 007 will appear on Xbox Live Arcade. Originally for the Nintendo 64 and remembered nostalgically as one of the best (and first) multiplayer console first person shooters, Goldeneye is reported to come with updated graphics and Xbox Live multiplayer support.

Xbox Evolved also reported that through a complicated agreement between Microsoft, Rare, MGM Studios (the owners of the Bond movies), and Activision (new owners of the license to make Bond video games), Goldeneye 007 will be released shortly before Activision's first James Bond game. Even more interesting is their evidence that Rare will be releasing more of it's back catalog from the Nintendo 64, including Bango-Kazooie and Perfect Dark.

What I find most intriguing about this rumor is that if it is true, more Nintendo 64 games could find their way to the Xbox 360 Arcade, so long as their developers and/or publishers are not owned by Nintendo. Less interesting to me is the actual game, Goldeneye. Truth be told, I can't stand some of the first 3D games from the Playstation and Nintendo 64 platforms.

Detailed 2D and stylized 3D graphics from older consoles are fine by me, but those first attempts at 3D look so jaggy and rigid, I find it hard to stay interested. With the likes of Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 to “compete” against is a game like Goldeneye still worth playing?

Better not be happening.

Why not? Nintendo doesn't need a monopoly.

I'm just a die hard Nintendo fan, I really don't mind if the 360 gets the games (It's a fantastic console). But I know that if it happens the XBox fans are going to rub it in my face.

Halo against Goldeneye is maybe not appealing, but there are countless other games that have much bette gameplay then today's games. even if they lack the graphics. That is where there is money to be made, bringing back old favorites that people want to play again.

I'm a GE64 nut I would love for this to come on to XBLA. With updated controls this would rule online. If this does happen I'll try not to rub it in to hard pat ;)

I pray this be true. Goldeneye played via Live would be the sweeter than sweetness it's self. So sweet that earthly Doughnuts would be as sour as poison, you'd spit them out you would.

Clayton you must learn graphics are pointless it's the game play and Rare got it perfect remember everyone no choosing Oddjob in multiplayer that is just cheap and cheating.

Goldeneye is another one I missed out on when it came out.
These days, I just can't play it. I went over to a friend's house and saw it there. "Hey." I said. "I heard that was good. Let's see it."

I thought it sucked, like hard.

Chalk up another game with some sort of appeal I'll just never be able to understand. :S

That's the same sort of problem with my brother's friends. They can't do 2D. Only 3D. 2D, in their eyes, is all a bunch of cartoon crap.
This is because they started with 3D, and never learned to appreciate 2D as they grew up.

I dunno. Whatever. *shrug*

Goldeneye 007 is definitely one of the best FPS games ever created, and if the Xbox would allow people to play it multiplayer without splitscreen, they should do it. It'd be fun, and that'd pay for itself.

He he, I remember Oddjob.

Trust me, give this game a break Clayton. Before Halo deathmatches, there was Goldeneye. You definitely want to try it out if they do release it for XBLA. And if they speak true about updated graphics, then that will be less of an eyestrain for you Mr. Graphics Connoisseur. :P :D

Hey as long as a graphics overhauls means just the game doesn't turn into a slide show when proxy mines come out to play then I'll be a very happy camper.

Allow me to defend myself. I know games are about the gameplay, and I mentioned I enjoy playing older 2D and stylized 3D games just fine. What's important to note is that, unlike the movie industry, when a game sequel is released or more games are made in a genre, they usually take everything good from previous games, add some new features, and update the graphics to be more pleasant to look at. I understand many people look nostalgically back on this game and many other games from the era, but my point of view is from someone who never played the game when it was originally released. Therefore I will end up directly comparing it to other FPS shooters I could be playing instead.

But back to my comment on graphics. I just find it hard to look back at these first attempts at making realalistic 3D. I find that 2D seems to stand the test of time a lot better, and I loved playing Symphony of the Night last year on the Xbox live Arcade. 3D just improves and improves, meaning that in quite a few years even Crysis will look ugly by comparison. Stylistic graphics like Team Fortress 2 will age much better than somthing like Unreal Tournament III becuase it's the art direction that stands out, not the bump mapping and textures. Like any Xbox Live Arcade game, I would of course give the game a try, but I don't think it would replace my time with Call of Duty 4 or Teamfortress 2. Then again, despite it not looking like Bioshock, I can't wait to play through Metroid Prime: Corruption on the Wii, becuase I loved the previous games so much.

As a Nintendo fan (and not much of a 360 fan) I don't like the idea of this happeneing. But overall I know that it if this is true then it would be better under the control of Microsoft. Nintendo would never be able to alter this game to suit the wants of gamers on the Wii VC. It'd be a straight port (50hz for us PAL gamers too).

I've got a friend who still plays Goldeneye on a regular basis. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to play online.

I don't understand how anyone can't stand the early games on the PSone and 64, they were the best on the systems. Goldeneye is still an excellent game and is one of the best in the limited lineup of the Nintendo 64.

Art direction really has no say on the gameplay. Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye look hideous to todays standards, yet are more deep and fulfilling than most games that come out today. I'd pick Goldeneyes large levels and multiple objectives and paths over Call of Duty or Halos dull mindless shooting, and the same goes with Mario 64 (and any Mario game really) when compared to new platformers.

Yes i have to agree. I hated Golden Eye. Never liked it.

Though i still do not like FPS games on consol.
