December 17, 2007Question of the Week: What Games Are You Looking Forward to in 2008?
The end of the year is a strange time. You got the holidays, the insane shopping, all of the "year's best/worst/indifferent" lists, tons and tons of new games (and not nearly enough time to play them), and the strange sensation of looking towards next year. Even as I look at my intimating stack of games to finish this year I can't but help look forward to next year and dream of playing yet more games. So this week's question is, "What games are you looking forward to in 2008?" Of course this is a pretty easy answer for me ... Face Training for the DS! Who else wouldn't want to practice making faces in front of their DS? (Actually it does look like a pretty cool game.) On a more serious note I would have to say Spore (of course). And from what I have been hearing through the grapevine all signs are pointing that this game will be released this year ... most likely in the Spring of 2008. So after years of speculation, reporting, and dreaming I wonder if this game will be everything we think it will be. From what I know and the extensive amount of work the development team has been putting into polishing this game have a feeling that it will meet all expectations and more. What about you? Comments
Smash Bros 3 Posted by Danzik at December 17, 2007 5:50 PMSpore, Starcraft 2, and Fallout in that order, are the games I am most looking forward too. I have been waiting for Spore since it was first shown back at, I believe GDC '05, and I like everyone else, hopes it lives up to the potential Wil Wright first showed us. Posted by Dustin at December 17, 2007 5:53 PMSSBB- GAIS IT HAS DIDDY KONG!!! Mario Kart Wii- GAIS IT HAS DIDDY KONG!!! God of War: Chains of Olympus- No Diddy, but I needs me some GoW. SPORE- Obligatory And I'll be buying all the new Mario spinoffs as well because Nintendo owns me. And I'll hopefully be able to snag a bunch of titles I missed out on this year at a lower price. Assassin's Creed (PC), Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath, GTA IV, StarCraft II, and definitely Spore. Posted by Sylvos at December 17, 2007 6:26 PMFallout 3, which is unfortunate as that it isn't coming out for nearly a year. I like a game that can keep me going for a while & Bethesda really knocked it out of the park for me with Oblivion. Posted by Razorburn2021 at December 17, 2007 6:41 PMMercenaries 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Dynasty Warriors 6, Destroy All Humans 3 -- that's all I seem to be able to recall. However, Spore is on a level of DO WANT on its own. All I can say is that I -hope- it won't be boring or too easy (or dumb!). I just can't tell. I thought about it for awhile, and then I remembered Little Big Planet for PS3. I love the open-endedness of user created content. Plus, the demo videos make it look almost photo-realistic. That's an amazing feet since it doesn't look like a real world. Posted by Robb at December 17, 2007 7:53 PMSpore. Simply can't wait. Was hoping they'd release the creature editor already, but my guess is EA wanted to keep it interefering from the holiday releases. Runner-up: Guild Wars 2. While probably not going to get beyond Beta in 2008, they could always surprise me. And if it keeps the good aspects of GW competetive play while adding in the more persistent elements it was lacking, I'll finally be able to put WoW out of my mind. Posted by Moose at December 17, 2007 9:14 PMI am waiting for Wii Fit, it looks like a blast to play! Plus I'm excited to see how my father will react to it, I plan on setting it up at his house when I visit. Posted by PatMan33 at December 17, 2007 9:32 PMOh man, I forgot about LittleBigPlanet. Although that's really out of the question, as I won't be getting a PS3 until at least the next [NON-DENOMINATIONAL GIFT GIVING DAY/DAYS]. Looks really neat though. :( Posted by Malt at December 17, 2007 9:40 PMSpore, GTA 4, Burnout, LBP (I have to buy a PS3 for this one), Mario Kart, SSMB, Alan Wake (if it makes it) and Fallout... I think I'm forgetting something but those should keep me busy. Posted by ilikesanta at December 17, 2007 9:52 PM1: Spore 2: Turok 3: Mercenaries 2 4: Army of two 5: Halo wars Posted by ShadowBandit at December 17, 2007 10:05 PMSpore Posted by Chris Conlon at December 17, 2007 10:42 PMMost definitely they are Assassin's Creed 2 and Mass Effect 2. The first in each series were both awesome games that executed the big things - the actual assassinating part in AC (which comprised maybe 17% of the game) and the roof jumping; in ME they nailed the conversation system and succeeded in creating an awesome storyline and an immersive universe rivaling Star Wars/Trek - but they messed up on a lot of littler things. Imagine AC without all the boring side quests and heaps of dreadful repetition, an AC with cities that actually had cool cities with things to do in them. How much better could ME have been if there were actual planets to explore, not just the same mountain terrain with a different color filter? What if the sidequests felt like part of the game, and not monotonous "do this" and "go there" filler that more often than not just broke up the flow of the MQ? Both sequels have a chance to fulfill all the potential that's there and live up to the hype Posted by Hizzah at December 17, 2007 11:32 PMDuke Nukem Forever Posted by kevin at December 17, 2007 11:44 PMSpore. Posted by Sub at December 18, 2007 12:26 AMStarcraft II (that's coming out in '08?! Sweet!), and Spore. I cannot believe Spore may actually be coming out soon. Its just been so long in development that it feels like it actually being available is only imagination. Either way, I cannot wait for the sheer amount of mind-boggling time I'm going to spend in that game. Would be anticipating more of the Wii games if I had one (still playing with my N64 and Gamecube). And, you know, if I had more money. Posted by Notorious B.O.B at December 18, 2007 12:53 AMAnd Spore, of course. Pretty much the same list as others -- Spore, Starcraft 2, Fallout 3 -- the one I'll add that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. As a general rule, evil Jedi simulators are pre-approved at my house -- is Wayne Brady gonna have to Force-choke a b***h? That and I allow myself to hope each year that EA puts some work into the PC version of Madden to fix the bugs that have existed for years, and close the feature gaps on the last-gen consoles. Needless to say, every year those hopes are crushed -- "no, your salary cap will still be f'ed up by Year 3 of your franchise, no you STILL can't play a custom team in franchise, but hey, at least we added Create-a-Vendor!" Posted by Pfellah at December 18, 2007 8:33 AMWho cares about other games when Spore is coming out next year!!! Posted by Hydromancerx at December 18, 2007 8:41 AMSpore. Spore Turok and if GoW2 (Gears... of War) comes out, definitely that.. Posted by Brad at December 18, 2007 2:53 PMspore, finally the wait will be over. those are the top games i'm interested in for this coming year. seems to be the same as most people on this list. hmm... good game developers must be good at making, and marketing, their games. Posted by nicesocks at December 18, 2007 3:16 PMWell: 2) GTA4. 3) Metal Gear Solid 4 4) Gran Turismo 5 5) (For now) God of War 3 (Althought not officially announced yet) Problem for me is that I at this time have not 1 X360 exclusive that I'm looking forward for. On top of the quite uninterresting current selection (Halo3 is not doing it for me, and Mass Effect is also not my type of game), my X360 is collecting dust.
Alan Wake, STALKER: Clear Sky, Fallout 3 and maybe Spore (not liking the dumbed down impression I'm getting from previews) PC gaming only for me and tbh not really into games at the moment, I prefer games like Portal which come from nowhere without all the baggage of hype and astound people purely on their own merits. Oh and maybe Mass Effect for the PC if they put some more work into it and clear up a few issues. Posted by swerv at December 18, 2007 3:46 PMWii: Spore, Animal Crossing, Mariokart, and Super Smash Bros. Spore and Smash Bros. I will be happy. Posted by Eligecos at December 18, 2007 8:17 PMStarcraft 2 Seriously nothing else comes even close to Starcraft 2. I mean it's the first thing that could really be a heir to Warcraft 3 as the king of all Lan-Parties. No other game has had such a good mod making and mod maker support, and I expect Blizzard to deliver a similarly great editor for Starcraft 2. And Warcraft 3 is the best eSports game to watch, because of programs like WaaaghTV and GGTV. I would expect Blizzard to implement this functionality into Starcraft 2 from the getgo (similar to Command and Conquer 3). Spore looks nice, too. I think I will buy it, but mainly for my mother I guess. I haven't played Fallout 1 or 2, so I don't have any expectations about 3. Posted by Sagan at December 19, 2007 1:39 AMToo Human, Battlefield, Fable 2, Fallout, GTA VI Posted by Bosnique at December 19, 2007 2:58 AMSpore and Smash Bros. :) Posted by BlueSun at December 19, 2007 5:28 PMWell aside from Spore I think 95% of this website are dieing to get their hands on that one. I'm more after Smash Bros Brawl been following the web-log updates thing and they don't seem to be doing a single thing wrong they are trying to put everything in this game. Posted by Cobra at December 20, 2007 4:47 AMI'm looking forward to Rock Band. Yes, we don't get it until the end of Q1 in the UK...
