October 02, 2006Why Would You Want to Buy a PS3?
Blu-Ray? I already have hundreds of DVDs thank you very much. Online access? I already have the Internet and Xbox Live. New games? I already have more games than I can play for my Xbox 360/PC/PS2/DS. The last thing I need is more games. Unique PS3 titles? I will say that Resistance: Fall of Man looks and plays great ... but so does Gears of War. And Gears of War doesn't require me to buy a new console to play. So why do I need to buy a PS3 exactly? Why should I kill myself looking for a PS3 this holiday season and spend $600 for this system? Why? I can not think of a single reason that I would want to buy the PS3 right now. Not a single one. Perhaps in a few months if/when the PS3 gets its legs and finds its place in the console landscape. But right now all I see when I look at the PS3 is a bloated, overpriced console which offers me nothing new. I truly hope that Sony manages to get their act together and releases some awesome unique content in 2007, but right now I just don't see the need. Now the Wii ... that's a different story. Comments
Yay Steve made a post! Posted by PatMan33 at October 2, 2006 12:38 PMYea!!! Glad to you you post. You have a lot of people that have been missing you. Posted by DCoiner at October 2, 2006 12:38 PMYes, I am back. For those of you who were wondering ... I had a baby boy recently (well, I didn't have the baby, my wife did). And my already crazy life became even crazier! But things appear to be settling down and now I will have some more free time every day to devote the site and the show. Look for a new podcast very soon! Posted by Gaming Steve at October 2, 2006 12:44 PMGreat to have you back. Can't wait for the next podcast. Id love to hear what you think about everything that been going on in gaming. TGS X06 etc. Posted by jongalt at October 2, 2006 12:59 PMSteve, congrats on your new addition. A girl and now a boy - good for you! I can only hope to be so luck with my next one. (1 girl thus far) Enjoy having even less time now. ;) btw - My sentiments exactly on the PS/3. It's time for Sony to wake up or they are going to niche themselves right out of the market. Posted by djfinny at October 2, 2006 01:05 PMHooray, Congratulations Gaming Steve, you've officially got the best excuse possible! It's really really great to have you back! Posted by Sander at October 2, 2006 01:14 PMCongratulations Steve (and Mrs Glicker). I hope you find the time to enjoy your new baby. They're not babies for long (as I'm sure you already know). Posted by Matt at October 2, 2006 01:19 PMI agree with you on the PS3 issue. It seems like Sony has forgotten that people by consoles to play games. New technology is great, but I should have a choice. I dont need Blu-Ray. Posted by Dean St. Onge at October 2, 2006 01:24 PMWow! Glad to see that you're back. A baby is a very good excuse for an abscense by the way. Posted by Tadale at October 2, 2006 01:31 PMWhy am I not surprised the first post NintendoSteve makes after months of absence is a poorly worded and ill-informed PlayStation flame post? I thought this was supposed to be a site for intelligent game discussion? I'd say this post is on the level with most forum drivel. Way to go, Steve. Posted by Khash at October 2, 2006 01:35 PMGood to see you're not dead Steve. Oh, and the only reason why you would have to get a PS3 is to be able to make reviews for anyone who is even considering to buy one. (which I highly doubt) But, ehh, a journalist has gotta do what a journalist has gotta do. :P Posted by Eligecos at October 2, 2006 01:38 PMI agree completely. There is no compelling reason even for hardcore gamers to buy a PS3 yet. Even if Resistance is the best FPS since HL2, It's not worth $660+tax. The PS3 is going to need a BUNCH of "system seller" quality titles to actually sell most people, since it's twice as much as most consoles. Once FF13 comes out I may consider getting one, but so far that's the only title even being talked about that I'd bother getting a PS3 for. steve, you´re absolutely right! Posted by xenomorph at October 2, 2006 01:43 PMHey Steve, After I took your advice on the DS Lite, I traded my DS in and have never looked back – also picked up Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and am enjoying it GREATLY! I agree with your view on the PS3, and all things concidered - will probably pick up a Wii just to play through Mario and Zelda. Xbox Live gamertag: Lounge Gremlin. Congrats on the new born too! Hey, when's your next show due? Posted by Pete from New Zealand at October 2, 2006 01:51 PMOMG STEVE IS BACK MUTHAFUCKAS!!!! I think the PS3 is going to end up surprising a lot of people. Yes, it's expensive, get over it. You can either afford it or not, don't go into debt over a game console. Being expensive affects the "value" of the machine, yes, but not the quality. If you can afford it, the "value" is different than if you can't. I know it's not "required", but a 360+HD-DVD is the same price as the 60GB PS3 (and people seem to be drooling over the HD-DVD add-on) and Sony definitely has their work cut out for them, but it's not "game over". They have a very powerful machine that at launch has some titles looking as good or better than the 1-year-out-the-gate 360. Most tech guys will admit, the PS3, once fully harnessed, will likely outperform the 360. So I see currently being shown launch titles that "look good", strong commitment from 3rd party developers galore, lots of games in development, power in the box, which should be enough, and there's also the unknowns that haven't really been "shown" to us like backwards compatibility (those who say that doesn't matter are probably basing it on the 360's BC, and you're right, it was too iffy to count on -- there are TONS of great PS2 games), their online presence (free multiplayer on most of the announced games sounds nice, a lot of other free services), their Linux offering (take it or leave it, if it's there and good, this will be a HUGE thing for Linux. A standardized hardware base of decently powerful computing.), PS3/PSP interactivity (doubtfully worth the purchase of either, but if you've already got them, I'm betting it'll be worth messing with), BluRay media's higher capacity (sure, games now may not need uber-storage, but when it comes to that, the 360 is stuck with DVD-9 whereas the PS3 is nowhere near as limited), as gimmicky as you think the SIXAXIS controller might be, it _will_ add to some forms of gameplay in ways that will be welcomed (I predict an eventual settlement of some kind with Immersion and we will likely get rumble -- my bets are all the SDK calls for rumble are still there and the controllers themselves are the only thing missing the rumble -- it'll suck to have to buy new controllers, but better that than never). Hands down the biggest feather the 360 has to flaunt in front of the PS3 is XBL. Sony will amaze everyone if they can jump out of the gate with anything remotely in the same ballpark as XBL. I would give them 6-12 months before passing final judgement on their online presence as that's not something that can just be "made". It's a much more fluid, dynamic thing. I'm concerned about their online presence, but all will be revealed in time. So while I totally respect that the PS3 may not be for _you_ (owning all those other platforms) but some of us haven't seen much from the 360 camp (until very, very recently) that led us to buy their machine. I feel the 360 is just now getting into full stride. If I had a 360, I likely wouldn't be looking to buy a PS3 at launch, but I don't, and I'm fairly excited to see the PS3 in action. I'm confident I'll end up with a 360 down the road, but this will likely be a Sony Christmas at my house (well, the kids are going to have a Nintendo Christmas of their own) I guess the bottom line is that just because you don't see a single reason to buy a PS3, that doesn't mean other people don't have their own valid reasons for doing so. Posted by rothbart at October 2, 2006 02:16 PMWell...here are a few reasons I can think of, and I'm a self-described console hater. First, the unit will be a pretty inexpensive way to add that BlueRay DVD drive to your system when you include the other things the PS3 can do. Yes, you have plenty of DVDs (they'll play fine of course), but just like broadcast HD TV, once you see a movie at home in BlueRay, you're going to prefer to rent or purchase new movies in the new format. I'm not advocating replacing your entire DVD collection, but instead I'm thinking about those new movies you rent or buy after BlueRay comes out. Second, there will be a way to use the online service to download PS1 games. Maybe you missed a great title along the way or you might be introducin a new generation to the greatness of Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, or Spyro the Dragon. In any case, having access to those at a reasonable price (oh and I'm not sure $15 is reasonable - I think $5 might be more like it.) And finally - the only real reason to buy a game console (of any kind) is the content. There will be PS3-only titles (or titles built for the PS3 and thus look better ther) that you're going to want. Maybe they aren't available this fall - if so, then wait. But when that content is there, you'll want the console too. Certainly this does have the effect of making that first game (maybe GT-HD? maybe the next GTA game?) cost over $600, but that's usually easy to justify. For a gamer, of course! :) Posted by ScottSh at October 2, 2006 02:17 PMHurra! Many many congratulations and all the best for the boy and his mother! Posted by Martin Bennedik at October 2, 2006 02:31 PMSteve. I'm just happy that your personal issues were happy ones, I had gotten the impression that there was some serious negative shit going down chez Steve. Anyway, as long as we know you're all right, you just concentrate on the important things, like that new family. We'll be here waiting for you when you're ready. Posted by Cruithne at October 2, 2006 02:39 PMDamn Rothbart, thats some pretty well-thought out stuff you've got there. Honestly though, Value is the true judge of something, not expense. A house's value is increased if it has more things, but it may not become more expensive. Titles that "Look Good" coming a long time in the future don't neccessarily translate to "Will be good" or "Will be worth $600" The Xbox 360 has exclusives that include Splinter Cell Double Agent, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Blue Dragon, Crackdown, Forza, Fuzion Frenzy 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Project Gotham Racing, Too Human and of course Halo 3. About Linux. This company has been the most anti-homebrew of any company I've ever seen. On the PSP they continually release homebrew breakers to thwart the loyal fanbase who still actually use their dying console. I have zero trust in Sony's intentions being honorably nice about this. I have no problems whatsoever swapping out discs ever 10 hours of gameplay if it means that I get to keep $200. Posted by Sander Scamper at October 2, 2006 02:41 PMWhy is the Wii a different story? "Online access? I already have the Internet and Xbox Live." "New games? I already have more games than I can play for my Xbox 360/PC/PS2/DS. The last thing I need is more games." Your "new games " reason seems to be an argument against getting any new technology. Posted by exam at October 2, 2006 02:49 PMI never gave up hope!....Made my day Steve Posted by Brian at October 2, 2006 02:51 PMHomebrew on the PSP is inherently tied to ISO loaders and piracy on the PSP. You can't fault a company for fighting piracy on their console. I've gone on the record before in other forums like dreamstation.cc and gamercastnetwork.com about how I predict Sony will handle (or should handle) the Linux computing. The best analogy is to look at how products like VirtualPC, VMware Workstation, and Parallels Workstation work. They give a guest OS bare metal access to a "virtual" machine. There's no compromising the PS3's hardware if they're emulating fairly vanilla PC hardware. At 3.2Ghz, the Cell processor is no slouch. If it emulated a general PC with even the equivalent of a 2.4 or 2.8Ghz processor, decent graphics, and networking, that'd be quite the basis for a widespread Linux distro. Something like Ubuntu that could run on the machine would be phenominal. However they choose to do it, it's important to realize it's not necessarily a huge deal to offer "true" and "full" Linux support without giving away the keys to the kingdom. If the PSP homebrew didn't come tied-to-the-hip with software piracy, I'm betting we'd see a more hands-off approach to it. Also keep in mind that just because you run Linux it doesn't mean you have to be a programmer at all. Modern distros are set up so you can point and click your way into thousands of programs from online repositories. Posted by rothbart at October 2, 2006 03:12 PMHey guys, I wrote a little response on my blog if anyone wants to read it, figured it'd be better than doing a huge reply here. Posted by _leech_ at October 2, 2006 03:49 PMFinally someone in a position of authority who is willing to speak their mind about the PS3 without worring about being diplomatic about it. Thank you Posted by KoR at October 2, 2006 03:49 PMOMG .... I just wrote this comment without reading the post because.... Thank god gaming steve PODCAST and blog arent dead .."At least i wish that .. because i love it". Posted by happy happy joy joy at October 2, 2006 03:57 PMWoo new post! Posted by ilikesanta at October 2, 2006 04:06 PMHey Steve, Congrats! As I posted in the forums, I'm glad to hear from you! It's awesome to have you back, but take your time getting back to the show. The new baby must come first. All of your dedicated fan base will understand :) As for the PS/3, personally, I have never liked any of the PS's, so I am biasly against the PS/3, but even from a logical standpoint, anyone with any sense of gaming will see the PS/3 as not worth it. I read some web previews stating that they would get PS/3 simply for the BlueRay, because its a cheap BR player. But I dont think BR will even be useful until they do things with movies, like having different multiple endings that can play randomly if selected. I would personally like to see movies have multiple story hierarcies that can play randomly. Anyway, thats a side not. I dont see the point of the BR at this moment in time other then if you have one of the next gen HDTVs that very few people have right now due to the price tag. I havent noticed a difference between the 480p and the 720p. That and they are only releasing 400k units at launch. The Wii is doing something like 4M. I just dont understand Sony sometimes. I'm not totally anti Sony though. My LCD is Sony as are my awesome headphones for my Ipod. But as the saying goes, for every 1 good product, theres 10 bad ones... (not sure if thats a saying, but you get the idea). Thats not to say the PS1/2 are bad, I just never liked them, mainly because of the graphics and the controller. Graphics are forgiveable, illogical and irritatingly uncomfortable controllers aren't. The PC has always been superior in my book. Anyway, enough of my ramblings. Congratulations Steve and Family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Thanks for a great show! Posted by Verkinix at October 2, 2006 04:12 PMI agree with Gaming Steve here... Why would I want a PS3... hmmmm. The SIXAXIS? BlueRay? The exclusives? CPU POWER and "TRUE" HD!! Online? Africa? This is a pretty wierd post for GS if you ask me. Has his opinion of the PS3 gone backwards and did his writing style change that much in the few months most of us haven't heared of him? The post makes some valid points I guess, but it will have good and popular exclusive games so it probably will be a popular game console. Perhaps future decisions made by Sony will make the PS3 even more popular. Who knows? Lets just see where the games land. Posted by Bloody Eyed Slacker at October 2, 2006 04:48 PMJust to clarify my post a bit more, I am only referring to buying a PS3 at launch. Of course I fully indeed to purchase a PS3 at a later date, and expect the game library to fill-in over 2007, but I have yet to find a compelling reason to buy a PS3 on day one. For $600 the PS3 hardware and launch titles just aren't enough to justify a day one purchase. Of course Sony expects, and will, sell the PS3 on the PlayStation name alone. But in this PS2/Xbox/360/DS/PSP/Wii/Gamecube/PC day and age I believe that Sony will need to do more to justify a purchase of this magnitude. That was the point I was trying to make. That Sony is going to need more than Blu-Ray, a tilting controller, PS3 Online, and the PS name to convince me to spend $600. Posted by Gaming Steve at October 2, 2006 05:06 PMSteve I recommened putting your clarification in your initial thing just in case someone doesn't read the comments. But that's just my suggestion. Anyway... Yay Steve! Glad to see you've returned and hope everything is okay. Posted by sgore at October 2, 2006 05:19 PMPlease note that Steve says that he sees no reason to buy the system "right now". By the time MGS4 and the new Final Fantasy come out he will probably have one. I am in the same camp as Steve, I see no reason to buy a PS3 right now either. That being said®* I also saw no reason to buy a DS when it first came out either and I ended up buying a PSP well eventually I got tired of my PSP , traded it in for a DS and never looked back. In fact I have a white DS Lite and my just traded in her regular DS and got a pink DS Lite. At the time that I got the PSP the DS looked like it wasn't going to do much but look at it now. I am not saying that the PS3 will do the same thing but the man just gave his opinion based on the facts that we have right now and they are valid facts that would keep someone from buying a console at this moment. So chill just because his opinion is different than yours doesn't make you or him wrong. It is my opinion that there is WAY too much negativity on the gaming journalism and by gamers in general. *"That being said"® is a trademark if Gaming Steve and GamingSteve.com 2006 Posted by DCoiner at October 2, 2006 05:20 PMI forgot to state above that my opinion might be considered wrong to a lot of people that think we need more of that in the gaming industry to keep the companies in line. Posted by DCoiner at October 2, 2006 05:22 PMCongratulations Steve! I hope everything with the new munchkin goes very well! Posted by Jonathan Rosing at October 2, 2006 05:41 PMWOO! steve is back, i was worried there for a bit. Me being 14, i don't really know how it feels to have a child, but raise them as gamers and geeks- They won't be as rebellious. Great to have you back! Posted by Strychnine at October 2, 2006 06:57 PMwelcome back! Posted by arbok at October 2, 2006 08:33 PMHey Steve! Congratulations on the new family member. :) I'm a PC gamer myself, never had much to do with consoles, but I've got to admit I've somewhat enjoyed watching the PS3 over the last few months, purely for the 'train wreck in slow motion' effect it seems to be exhibiting. I mean, what do I know, maybe it'll pull through and have some success, but as you so succinctly point out in your post, it's kind of hard to see the point right now. At the moment, the most entertainment one can get from the PS3 is in "Giant Enemy Crab"/"hit weak point for Massive Damage" jokes. :p This is typical Sony. Build a great product that makes waves (Walkman, Playstation 1), then make big and promising plans but drop the ball completely (minidisc, PS3) and have a competitor walk all over you, stealing the market you previously owned (iPod, XBox). Anyway, really looking forward to the belated next episode of the podcast. I've been missing it greatly, can't wait to hear it. :) Posted by Tim at October 2, 2006 09:17 PMGlad to hear the good news Steve! I was missing you, but I think we all understand how important the birth of a new child is! Haha! Great article. I look forward to your next podcast. Congrats to you and your new family on your new kid. I hope you find lots of happiness with him and your family :) Posted by Pilot4Life at October 2, 2006 09:33 PMI certainly won't get a ps3 at launch, but with only 100000 units coming to north america I know they will all be sold out within a day, and half those units will be on ebay going for thousands of dollars. I doubt the prosperity this system will experience. By the time this console becomes affordable enough to warrant a purchase, the 360 and Wii will have more than enough titles for any gamer to be satisfied. If truly amazing titles come out for the Ps3 (which they will, eventually) I may not get one until very, very late in the consoles life. Most likely around the time they release a NOT-HUEG version. I expect a whole whack of the Launch ps3's to break and be pieces of junk at launch, with sony, who is known to be shoddy when it comes to console production at least combined with the rushed manufacturing of the blu-ray drives will equal distaster for many would-be buyers at launch and the proceeding months. I dont envy the early adopters. Posted by Shurakai at October 2, 2006 10:18 PMSteve! I missed you! Posted by Brian at October 2, 2006 10:58 PMYeah Steve! Congrats on the new boy and we are all happy your all ok. It's just really great to see ya doing ok. In the case of the PS3. I also don Holy freaking crap Steve, you got a boy! Steve Jr.? Posted by Shadowcreep at October 3, 2006 12:04 AMI'm sure you'll find a way to nail gaming into your new-born son. Perhaps play some tracks from Halo as he sleeps? Anyways, forget my horrible parenting advice. Its good to have you back, I kept checking this site during TGS and X06 with no update in site and I got worried that you just stopped updating the site. Again, its good to have you back and I hope for the best for your wife and kids. When's the next kid due? Or is too soon to say? You can be like Valve and state, "When its ready." LOL. Posted by SecretAsian at October 3, 2006 12:29 AMCongratulations with the new born! Looking forward to his first pod-casts from the crib! I agree with you about the "Why should I buy the PS3". I will wait for some time too see why. I will perhaps go over to a new console when they stop making any games for the PS2. Posted by Thor Jarle at October 3, 2006 12:31 AMCongrats Steve! Now just don't start what my favourite author did with his blog, namely posting tons of pictures and videos of your kid! Trust me, it's something he wouldn't exactly appreciate in ten years. Posted by Huggkruka at October 3, 2006 01:49 AMMaybe you're just getting old. Posted by Bonobo at October 3, 2006 02:22 AMGreat to hear from you again Steve! You still remain my most respected podcast and source for gaming information. Looks forward to hearing your next podcast and congrats on your new boy! Posted by Bomer at October 3, 2006 02:44 AMI can totaly see where steve is coming from, but the truth is...i will be getting a ps3 on launch day. I work at a game crazy and i want a ps3 so it works out for me.. but most people who want one will not get one..its just the way it is.. and if they do they will be getting the $5,000 packages with a ps3 a few games and a new sony hd tv... or they will spend alot on e bay.. i want a ps3 for the final fantasy's and at launch i will get resistence... i have a nice big hdtv and would like to see some blue ray.. but that isnt really why i want a ps3..i just want one for resistence at this point.. and im a big enough gamer that,.. well.. that is enough for me to get one.. i will also be getting a wii two days later.. and will love all three of my systems.. but if it ever comes to picking my ps3 over my 360... its x box...every time. Posted by allen at October 3, 2006 02:51 AMCongrats Steve. I'm glad to hear your happy news. Make sure you give your family time. They are first! As all have said before me, very glad to hear from you again. Excited for the new podcast when it does arrive. Well thought out PS3 comments. I have to agree with 'Scamper'... "The Xbox 360 has exclusives that include Splinter Cell Double Agent, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Blue Dragon, Crackdown, Forza, Fuzion Frenzy 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Project Gotham Racing, Too Human and of course Halo 3. Congratulations Steve hope everyone is well. Posted by Wadders at October 3, 2006 05:50 AMCongratulations Steve to you and your wife. You must be very proud. Who needs a PS3 when you've got a boy? ;) Posted by Einhander at October 3, 2006 08:45 AMCongatulations on the new family member! That's awesome. My main reason to not buy a PS3 is the starting lineup. I call it the $700 Metal Gear Solid. While the Wii has several strong titles in the starting gate. Meanwhile, the PS3 has a nebulous "Phantom"-like release, because they keep changing the specs and prices. "Those who like Japanese RPGs and Japanese gaming in general will find reasons to buy a PS3." "Hardcore gamers - the ones who have a particular fondness for schmups" And pray tell, what JRPGs and schmups will be available at launch for the PS3? Oh, that's right... zero. That's what he's talking about, did you even bother to read the article or just freak at the headline? He's saying that there isn't a killer app to make folks rush out and buy the system, especially at such a high cost. Posted by mjs at October 3, 2006 09:56 AMI tend to look at this issue from a pragmatic viewpoint. Firstly, it may be a value to some, but to most, the most important thing here is the expense. I can't drop $600 for a new console, regardless of the value. So to me, the price is a serious issue, as I'm sure it is to many Americans. Secondly, the whole HD thing is pointless to most people. I don't even know anyone who owns an HD TV, so why should it matter if my console can support it? Honestly, I don't know why people keep going on about this technology that I can't afford, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. Finally, based on this, if the average consumer cannot afford a PS3, then this will cause it to be an unpopular system, which may not be that big a deal for die-hard fans, but it will, in the end, seriously affect 3rd-party support. Of course, Gamecube had basically no 3rd-party support, and it was still worth it, so I guess time can tell, but I still stand by my point that if nothing else, Sony has priced itself out of the homes of many people. My guess is that most simply are simply unwilling or unable to drop that much cash on a game system. Posted by macweirdo42 at October 3, 2006 10:50 AMfew things about this post Welcome Back, Stephen! Good to hear stuff's settling, gotta love those hectic "everything's happening at once and i'm supposed to adhere to a SCHEDULE?" times, lol. I'm in 100% agreement on the PS3. Even IF the US gets Japan's discount on the baseline PS3 I don't see a compelling reason to buy it ahead of the inevitable late-2007 price-drop, if that soon. I've gotten to the point that I'm even more discouraged from buying it every time Kaz or some other Sony talking head tells me of another super-awesome feature. Sure, it can make Julian Fries and do my Taxes, but if it were really God's gift to console gaming would you be talking about this other fluff? On a side note I'm sort of disappointed in the Penny Arcade guys for reconsidering their stance merely on one White Knight Story trailer. If there were 5 or 6 games that looked that good coming I could see it, but you're really thinking about going Day One on PS3 just becuase of WNS? Posted by Beomoose at October 3, 2006 11:51 AMWow. Now that is harsh. I know you're not a Sony fan persay Steve, but that was just rip-roarin' hardcore. I completely agree with you on many of the reasons why not to buy a PS3--but I must say there are a few great ones: a handful of badass unique games, with out of control graphics, some of them being PS3 exclusives. Another reason might be that--even though we hate to admit it sometimes--Sony has ruled the console world since the PS1. They know what they are doing, they always give us tons of content in the end, and there always seems to be a method behind the madness. I do however think there is something insane about trying to sell us the PS3 at a $600 price. I know Sony said they "want us to work for the PS3" or something along those lines, but that price puts so many gamers out of the loop. Ok ok...we must agree--the smart ones anyway--that consoles the past generation and a half are loosing money on hardware, and most of us realize that if we purchased the innards of a PS3 on NewEgg, we would spend at least $600...so...perhaps Sony is trying a different approach for once. Perhaps they don't want to loose out on hardware like Microsoft did, and does. Steve, I have liked Sony since the beginning. I of course enjoy my PC quite a bit better, but I don't dislike Sony...so I have to ask myself, why the hell are they doing this? And I admit, I haven't been a fan of Nintendo since the 64...and when I say ..."haven't been a fan." I don't mean I dislike Nintendo...I have just perfered to play my PC, Xbox, and PS2 instead. My son however...he plays Gamecube...which is what that system (to me) is meant for. But for the first time, I have been excited about a Nintendo system again...so yes, the Wii is going to be great--especially for my son. Anyhow. My 2 cents. I certainly agree. The PS2 controllers are by far my favorite console gamepad. If you want to Sonyhate, you go boy, but hating their controllers and graphics? Ridiculous! Humbug! Rothbart, I completely agree with you. You're a good man Charlie Brown. And to everyone out there, give me a break. Price? Yes it sucks, it's hardcore for you console owners--but let me tell you something...do you know how many young kids I know personally that save for a gaming PC from their own income? Do you know how much a gaming PC runs? At least $1000 for anything worth while. And don't talk to me about Windows apps, internet, adult content, etc--they got the computer to play games, and that's it. So if you all can't justify throwing down $600 on a bleeding-edge console, that is your issue. The hardware alone is worth that by far. There are many many many people all over the world that buy PCs strikly for gaming for upwards $3,000...I think we can all understand what I'm saying...so stop this pyscho-babble...get with the program. Lastly folks...don't buy one at launch...no big deal. But if you are seriously one of those people telling me that you never liked Sony, or don't think they will have enough 1st and 3rd party support...you are ludicrous. Sony's library is enormous. And don't tell me it's mostly crap titles, because my only reply is..."isn't that the case with EVERY console?" Oh and Steve, congrats on the little one. I still want to buy you a drink in the city--we can further discuss why the PS3 will definitely be worth it in the near future. Posted by eXistenZ at October 3, 2006 01:24 PMcongrats on the new addition steve, glad you are back posting. Congradulaions Steve and Mrs Glicker, Take all the time you need, I have two boys. I'm just happy to hear everything is fine. As to the article, I probably won't be buying any next gen system I have a stack of Xbox, DS and Gamecube games to go through first. Also the prices. As a side note thank you for the advice you've given on how to get a nongamer spouse more interested in games. It's worked. Last night my husband shocked me by coming home from EB Games with a black DS Lite for himself. I bought a few of the Nintendo touch software and for the past month he's been playing my DS more then I have. My husband said he bought the black DS so we could play together :) Posted by Karen at October 3, 2006 08:37 PMwell as everyone has said a million times the ps3 is way too expensive, and its not worth it. Although it may be worth it later on who knows but the way i see it is there are two systems coming out within the next year, one is $200 and looks like it's going to be insanely fun the other is $600 and has top of the line hardware and blah blah blah but that doesn't mean it'll be fun. So in my mind its a fairly easy decision. yay! steve is back! hope that new pooping machine... err... baby boy is more fun than your games. hee hee. also, i've never bought a playstation. sure, i've played games on them. and i can admire the company desire to present an impressive machine. but c'mon, 600 bucks for a system? i think 400 is overpriced... sheesh. go go wiivolution! Posted by bob at October 4, 2006 02:22 AMThe number one (and only) reason to buy a PS3 on launch day is to turn it around on Ebay, double (or triple) your money, and then buy a Wii and several games 2 days later with all the profits and still have money left over. Posted by Joby at October 4, 2006 10:01 AMI’m not completely driven either way. However, I happen to be a tech nut. For this fact, I have an interest in the PS3. Those are my key defences of the price of the PS3. I cant even fathom how much sony will lose on these systems, and how long before they make any of it back. I am sure that the people at sony will be sitting pretty laughing away when the 360 runs out of puff in a few years and the PS3 powers on with its newer generations of software which take advantage of the systems potential. But…… will sony be able to last out until this time? Posted by Edenist at October 4, 2006 11:35 AMI think the Americans at this site and especially on the forums, rally behind Microsoft and the Xbox 360 with patriotic zeal. They indulge Nintendo, as it isn't seen as much of a threat. Sony on the other hand is increasingly becoming the enemy. People like Steve can't imagine why anyone would want to buy a PS3, because the Xbox 360 has it all, Microsoft is American, and America is a great and glorious nation. Many of the fools here follow the same line of thought, for they fall over themselves agreeing with everything Steve says. Here's an idea though: perhaps non-Americans might find value buying a PS3 over an Xbox. Hmmm, I wonder if there are any Japanese people for example, who might just want a PS3? Posted by Laurence at October 4, 2006 09:42 PMin response to the post above mine: I have read quite a few gaming-related forums and gaming-related subforums, and I consider myself quite up to date on the latest gaming news and opinions... and IIRC, I have never seen anyone saying they were buying an Xbox 360 because it is an "American console"... Posted by Wunderchu at October 4, 2006 10:47 PMNobody says 'I buy Xbox because I'm a proud American and I like apple pie as well'. It's probably a subconscious recognition of supporting one's nation. Japs tend to support their corporations and shun foreign imports, now it seems Americans are doing the same. I guess the success or failure of the PS3 in America will illuminate things further. Posted by Laurence at October 4, 2006 11:11 PM.. IC that makes a bit more sense to me now.. I still don't entirely agree with it, but it does make more sense to me Posted by Wunderchu at October 4, 2006 11:49 PMI am totally annoyed at your comments about the PS3 and the odvious fanboyism that your showing to the PS3 Honestly This is the worst post you have made, such a bad attempt I think Blu-ray is one of the best features of the 360 Laurence I agree it's one of the proofs how he's not even showing anything but bias towards the xbox 360 Verkinix I am sorry but that was just a a pathetic post Though Congrats Steve on the new bundle of Joy :) I am happy for you though honestly I hope your next show is good compared to this one otherwise I don't know Posted by Jonathon at October 6, 2006 01:42 AMAmen Steve, the PS3 really is looking terrible. I'm glad I don't want any of their exclusive franchises, because they are going to rip off everyone who has been loyal to them. Posted by UNSCleric at October 9, 2006 05:43 AMFirstly, I don't care what kind of fanboy you are, how much money you can spend, or whether you like chunky or smooth peanut butter...if you seriously think the PS3 is going to be a crap console, you're dead wrong. Secondly, you may be fooling yourself, but you ain't foolin' the majority of us hardcore gamers. If you listen to all the professional gamers in editorial, podcasting, conferences, etc...you will notice that not ONE of them says the PS3 is going to be crap. The only thing they are debating is WHEN to buy a PS3...because lord knows, they ALL want one. The PS3 is going to be a fantastic console, with tons of first and third party support. Also, the technology is even a slight step above the 360, which will allow it in time to pull even more juice from the hardware. Some may argue with this, but the hardcore hardware boys know what I'm talking about. The only bit of skepticism I hold is for the PS3's online presence. But I have faith that Sony knows they have to keep up with the Joneses (or however that is spelled). I'm sure they will have plenty of online support--the only questions is, will it mimic Xbox Live or not. I just hope you all realize, that coming here, or there, or anywhere and saying, "Sony sucks, and the PS3 sucks...and nobody wants a crappy expensive console...blah blah" will get you no respect. You look like an adolescent fool. All of us in the industry can't wait to get our hands on the PS3...it has a healthy dose of launch titles, and in no time at all will have some seriously kick ass software. So please, don't go rattlin' your mouth off downing the PS3...it's going to kick ass. And lastly, I'm not a Sony fanboy at all. I have been gaming since Pong, and have owned so many consoles I don't care to list them. If anything, I am a PC lover at heart. In all honesty, I THINK WE ALL WIN THIS CONSOLE GENERATION--the 360, the PS3, and the Wii are all going to be awesome! Cheers! Posted by eXistenZ at October 11, 2006 02:20 PMWell, first of all Xbox 360 is not all that. It still got no special games on it. Halo so what. Gears of war so what. By the way, you still way all you DVDS on PS3 along with Blue ray player movies. It doesn't require you to replace your library of DVDS - so no excuse to people won say they don't wan to throw away their DVDs. DVD and Blue Ray is not like VCR and DVD you can play DVD on your blue ray. Posted by Joseph Handibode at October 29, 2006 02:25 PM"New games? I already have more games than I can play for my Xbox 360/PC/PS2/DS. The last thing I need is more games." What the hell is the point of this post anyways???
LMAO, OBVIOUSLY had to buy a NEW console for GOW now didn't you... Personally this site is a laugh and I have no clue as to why there is a link to it from news4gamers... Posted by Testo at October 29, 2006 02:31 PMWell, well, well .......huh it's not surprising that a nitendo fanboy would not see any reason of why to get a PS3 The way I see the PS3 is like I see the Dreamcast. Wayy ahead of it's time. The Dreamcast had graphics that were unbelievable for the time, but it failed. Sony better offer more than a new format, and good looking games. Xbox 360 is good b/c its affordable, and you get to play next-gen titles. Wii is good b/c its completely new and looks like fun. PS3 is...well, exensive, and is ahead of it's time. I dont see it succeeding at all like the former playstations Posted by Bonsal at October 29, 2006 08:10 PMI knew sony was a frickin hype.COME on, the graphics?what's so stunning?360 games are getting stunning, gears of war is the one that is making the ps3 look bad right now.everything fanboys and sony said is nothing, I mean nothing to what htey said.the grpahics are close to the 360.what's so next gen about grpahics that are the same?even then the grpahics on the games i saw for the ps3 don't look superior to all 360 games. I mean,I knew sony was lying again, yes the 360 and thge ps3 ARE NOT any diffretnt o each other.and most of the games on the 360 well be playable on the ps3 anyways.so your going to blow $600 on a syatem that has no better grpahics to play mostly all the games that are already out?sony just got us all hyped out.I am not pleaesd to see what the ps3 has to offer. Posted by Velocity at November 2, 2006 03:35 PMWhen does the PS3 come out and how much is it to buy Thanks, Blu-Ray? I already have hundreds of DVDs thank you very much. Online access? I already have the Internet and Xbox Live.
ONLINE ACCESS Yes so... with ps3 you hook up the ethernet cable and WHALAW! You got youself a much biger screen instead of that dink 14" screen you got yourself [ a sony 60" Plasma screen tv ]... or a dinky 14" low defention... I would not buy a ps3 for a year or so. Let it get the library behind it and see what it can do . As for right now the Wii with Zelda is enough to warrent the purchase of that machine at that cost. Simple math for me and I ended up happy with my ds as a 40 year young gamer. I mostly enjoy my pc but the little DS has found a warm spot I was surprised existed... Posted by Barzenak at November 25, 2006 07:11 PMI really feel sorry for the scalpers who bought this system, and tried to sell it over thousand dollars.
