March 07, 2006Spore Gameplay Video: The Uncut VersionThe Spore gameplay video that I posted last week was actually an abbreviated version of Will Wright's presentation from last year's Game Developers Conference. Thanks to a little tip from my buddy Tim, I was able to locate the entire 61 minute(!) presentation which not only includes the Spore gameplay video but a 12 minute introduction, a few extra bits, and a nice wrap-up from the main man Will himself. Definitely check out this version for the full "uncut" version of the Spore presentation. By the way, some people seem to be a bit confused thinking that this video was from 2006's GDC. The above video was from last year's GDC, March 11, 2005 to be exact. So just think if the game looked this good a year ago who knows how great the game will look this year! Look for my full Spore coverage from this year's GDC from March 20-24, as well as tons of developer interviews and more game previews than I can possibly imagine. It's going to be crazy I tell ya! Comments
Looks great! Thanks Steve :) I'm looking forward to this weeks podcast! Posted by Bob at March 7, 2006 01:30 AMYeah...This video is the one on the GDC Site. It's provides a little bit of context and backstory for the smaller video Posted by Naar at March 7, 2006 02:44 AMCool! but, where's your weekly podcast, Steve? Posted by Mighty Max at March 7, 2006 03:09 AMI'm sure the game will look so great that it won't have a hope of running on my current rig. The Sims 2 has frame rate issues let alone what Spore will require. I guess I'll enjoy Spore in about ten years when I buy my next computer. :| Posted by Laurence at March 7, 2006 08:08 AMA great video to say the least, but for some reason I cant get out of my mind how many times Will says "um". Posted by Psychic_Dude at March 7, 2006 08:32 AMSo, how long after the GDC before the next vid will be on the internet? Posted by Deiland at March 7, 2006 09:16 AMI look forward to the next podcast. Hopefully it will be tonight!! *hint hint* (PS I've already seen this video, but cheers anyway!!!!!) ::) Posted by Rct2mad at March 7, 2006 10:31 AMHere's my one problem with the video (and not the speech itself): Where are the slides?!! It annoys me to no end to see the man talking about and referring to images that I'm not being allowed to see! Posted by Ryuukuro at March 7, 2006 10:51 AMI agree -- the lack of slides was disappointing. It's strange because many of the other videos on the GDCTV site included the slides in a seperate window. Posted by Derella at March 7, 2006 11:45 AMMaybe they we all too amazed at the time to see them? I now I would be ;) Posted by Rct2mad at March 7, 2006 12:21 PMThere is only one thing I want to know... when will this game be coming out? I predict this game will be the best game of the year, best game of the decade and the best game of the century, I give you my word. playing this game is like... being god with a less graphical consept! WOW Posted by Wisher at March 7, 2006 01:11 PMNice one. Thanks again. Posted by Brutus at March 7, 2006 01:14 PMMaybe this is pessimistic of me, but last year when Steve presented Spore it wasn't just to plug the game, but to demonstrate a number of new developments in game design, including procedural... stuff. I'm really, really hoping he talks about it this year, but if he does, wouldn't that be sort of across purposes with the conference itself? Unless he's added some new stuff that substantially changes the way the game's played it'll just be an update to a project, the theories behind which have already been discussed at length. Definitely something intriguing, but to my understanding, not the purpose of the GDC. Posted by Lobster at March 7, 2006 01:35 PMYou mean Will, right? Will Wright is the guy behind Spore, Steve is the guy behind this site ;) Anyway, I see your point, but I also think Will knows this, so don't worry... :) Posted by P4p3Rc1iP at March 7, 2006 02:19 PMAs I'm understanding, Will (or Lucy Bradshaw) will give a speech at this years GDC about prototyping, something that is also relatively new in the game development scene. Usually when a game is developt, someone has an idea and then executes it until it is finished. This has a drawback that if that idea is flawed, the almost finished game must be tweaked to make it better, which is expensive to do. With prototyping, the development will be more streamlined, thus more costeffective. Spore is one of the first games that was first extensively prototyped, to see what works and what doesn't. Posted by DoggySpew at March 7, 2006 02:35 PMGod, I want that game. Has anyone nominated Will Wright to be a god yet? His mind baffles me--so deep yet down deep he just wants to play the games. Posted by Princess at March 7, 2006 09:59 PMwill this be coming out on the 360?
hmmmmm i dont think a console would have the power to run a game like this, this game does not look like it relies mostly on graphics like the console games usually do, this one will be quite processor and memory hungry wich is a think even the next gen consoles cant do very well, i would trust a 3 year old computer to run this game but not a next gen console to be honest. by the way this game really looks amazing everything is so well made and tought and its only an early version , the only thing i'm worried about is the EA logo on it... Posted by biff at March 9, 2006 04:32 PMwow... "next gen consoles cant do very well, i would trust a 3 year old computer to run this game but not a next gen console to be honest." and you know the processor speed of the 360 and ps3? Honesty isn't knowledge. Posted by vecha at March 9, 2006 11:10 PMconsoles are for kiddies anyway, i've read the specs those look like tiny computers that look "cool" to the children... consoles are doomed since they are allmost like computers in specs, wouldnt be surprised to see this generation of consoles being the last one. "consoles are for kiddies anyway, i've read the specs those look like tiny computers that look "cool" to the children... consoles are doomed since they are allmost like computers in specs, wouldnt be surprised to see this generation of consoles being the last one." Wow...there really are PC-fanboys. Seems like you try to be too intelligent for your own good, "I've read the specs" But can you comprehend? Why would they be doomed since they almost like computer? Because you don't play them?...kiddies? I guess people like you need a reason for spending 4000$ on something other then a blowup doll. Posted by vecha at March 11, 2006 11:44 PMUm... Will needs to take some speaking classses. Um...Because he can't seem to start a sentence without "um" at the beginning. Um...that got so annoying to me that I finally turned the video off. Um... I hope he never does any voice acting in any of his games. Um...other than that, the game doesn't look too bad. Um...um...um... Posted by Ron at March 12, 2006 01:59 PMWow I want this game so bad. If only for the impact on the gaming community. Think of the possibilities. I want to see procedural animation hooked up with Radiant AI. that would make a truely awesome game. But as things stand now any word on a release date? I believe this will be the only game i play for a good while. Posted by Russell at March 13, 2006 10:49 AMthat game is going to be the foothold of the golden age of gaming, there is endless possibilities and options it will be a game that is never going to board of. Posted by eddie at March 13, 2006 11:21 PMNot only can I not wait for this game to come out... ...but I can't wait for this game to have been out for a year. That's when we'll have all the user-created content, the patches, the hacks, the Something Awful articles. Posted by Nick Bensema at March 17, 2006 07:06 PM"hmmmmm i dont think a console would have the power to run a game like this, this game does not look like it relies mostly on graphics like the console games usually do, this one will be quite processor and memory hungry wich is a think even the next gen consoles cant do very well, i would trust a 3 year old computer to run this game but not a next gen console to be honest."
Gamespot says the expected release date is Q3 of 2006. I believe Q3 is Summer... correct me if i'm wrong. Posted by David Brasser at March 18, 2006 12:19 PM"Gamespot says the expected release date is Q3 of 2006. I believe Q3 is Summer... correct me if i'm wrong." If I'm correct in assuming that Q3 is Quarter 3, then it would be in the July, August, September area. Posted by JavaJesus at May 12, 2006 01:28 AMErm... Just... Wow... What amazed me is that every time you thought that you had reached the top, he added another level. I only heard about this game yesterday, but now... I don't know what to say... How could I have missed this? Posted by Draco at May 16, 2006 05:36 AMCongrat! skazal Kondrat. Posted by Val at June 10, 2006 08:03 AMZeige mir Deine Freunde und ich sage Dir wer Du bist.
