Old Games Never Die ... Nor Do They Fade Away

Adventure IIWhat is it about old computer and video game systems that people just can't seem to let go? It's amazing just how many people are developing new games (aka "homebrews") for systems which are ten, twenty, even thirty years old. There is even a two-day Classic Gaming Expo which is going into its ninth year. Then again, without this hardcore gaming niche where else could you find Adventure II, coming out for Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit computers (you can even download the demo if you want to give it a whirl).

Pretty much every single classic system has a online community cranking away on new games. If you want to find some games for your ancient (but beloved) system, make sure to start your search at AtariAge which has tons of the information on homebrew games and is the central hub for the extremely popular Atari homebrew scene.

For other systems there are simply way too many sites to list here, but make sure to check out the Classic Gaming System List, the free monthly online newsletter Retrogaming Times Monthly, and ClassicGaming to find that new Bally Astrocade, Odyssey², Vectrex, or other hard-to-find game system.

So what is your long lost system of days gone by? Personally I'm going to download that Adventure II and give it a try.

YAY! Classic games! My mother played those back in the day, she attributes her old addiction to my current one. :D
I remember playing the original Adventure(under the name Collosal Cave)

say XYZZY
You say, "Xyzzy" nothing happens.

:-) Thanks for a trip down memory lane, Steve!

P.S. Is it fine that I add these games to the lists in the forums?

Aaaaah, classic games!

Steve, I think you did already one time, but I REALLY think that you should RetroReview the SwordQuest saga for the Atari (2600 I think). I don't know WHY but that game was just amazing. The puzzles, the rooms, the mythology and HEY, the comic-books that came with it were AWESOME! I still have my copies of Earthworld and Waterworld (well, I think it was those two, the ones which came with Swordquest 1 & 2) around somewhere!

So yeah, those are MY titles. But you know Steve, sometimes it's nicer to just stay with the memory about how great those games were, because when you replay them today with your current mindset, it just tends to ruin that sweet memory for you. ;D

There's even a thriving community dedicated to interactive fiction... remember Zork and A Mind Forever Voyaging and Planetfall from a company called Infocom? Text only? No graphics? Check out rec.arts.int-fict and rec.games.int-fict or even the yearly comp held for people writing these games... http://www.ifcomp.org/
