January 30, 2006Dofus ... the Little MMO That Could
Real quick rundown: at first glance the game appears to be the lovechild of WoW and Pokemon, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Once you load it up you'll immediately be struck by the stunningly beautiful animation and graphics (I'm having fun just running around the world to see all the amazing scenery). As for all the other MMO staples they're all here and accounted for: eleven unique character classes (no fighters, mages, or rogues here, instead you'll play Ecaflips, Sadidas, Sacriers, amoung others), twenty different professions, a deep crafting system, a small monthly fee of around $7 (you can also play a small portion of the game totally for free), guilds, quests, and all the other MMO stuff you know and love. But my favorite part of the game so far has been the turn-based tactical combat engine. It's deep, moves along at a brisk pace, and requires serious thought on the higher levels (oh yeah, you can get your character up to level 200 ... ouch that's a lot of levels). Fans of Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics will definitely want to give this game a try just for the combat system alone. I have not played Dofus enough to give a truly in-depth review just yet (look for that in a future podcast) but I can give a Gaming Steve "check it out as it's free to try and there is a lot of unique elements in there which should hold your interest for at least a few gaming sessions". Ironically the game that I am really keeping my eye on is not Dofus but Ankama Games next project, Dofus-Arena. This game is still in beta-test and there isn't a whole lot of information about the game, but just the screenshots alone look intriguing. From what I can tell Dofus-Arena will allow turn-based tactical combat from a top-down isometric view in an MMO world mixed with a collectable card game. I only have six words ... oh my god that sounds amazing! I need to get into that beta-test right away! Anyone out there playing this one yet? Do tell! Comments
Just from looking at it, I get a Ragnarok online feel although it does seem pretty interesting. I've always had a love/hate thing with tactic games. Vandal Hearts was a great game and I miss it so. -leeman Posted by lemurbouy at January 30, 2006 10:25 PMFirst impression just off those screenshots: Orgasmic! O_O This is straight down my avenue! =D Yeah, Ragnarok does come to mind when I saw this. But, hell, its free, sounds like fun and I've already started downloading it XD Posted by Devilmachine at January 31, 2006 02:36 AMI don't like WoW and I hate Pokemon... Posted by P4p3Rc1iP at January 31, 2006 02:38 AMI gave Dofus a try about a month ago, but found the community surrounding the game to be extremely juvenile. What you say about it appearing like Pokemon and FF:Tactics is right, and the combat is quite interesting, but the game feels... like a Flash game? A game-lite, so to speak. I didn't spend enough time with it, admittedly. I'm really curious about the "deep crafting system" you mention. Could you explain that? Or perhaps you should just hold out until you're ready to do a podcast review of it. I can wait :-) Posted by Jomdom at January 31, 2006 11:51 AMActually I would agree with you Jomdom, the game is sort of an MMO-lite. So far I have been playing the game in short bursts, getting a few rounds of combat in, killing a few things, leveling up a bit, and it's been fun. I haven't been able to get into the game like I did with WoW or CoH, but in a strange way I am almost relived! I just don't have enough time for another WoW-type game in my life. But if I want to quickly jump on and kill a few things and level up my character Dofus has been hitting the spot so far. More to come. Posted by Gaming Steve at January 31, 2006 01:19 PMIt's been a fun little game so far, but I feel like I'm kind of burned out of MMOs after so much time playing WoW. Dofus-Arena seems extremely interesting to me though, hope the beta starts up soon! very nice i tryed it out love it not sure about the battle system Posted by Retman at January 31, 2006 03:30 PMI tried it out today! Really nice looking! However, I start off moneyless?! Also, I have no idea how the combat system works. It feels stupid, that high level people can challenge me when I'm level 1. Its a nice little game though :) Posted by Daan at February 1, 2006 02:38 PMTactical RPG + MMO!!! Trying it now... Posted by Shikaeshi at February 1, 2006 07:50 PMThanks Steve !!! I played for a couple of days and decided to subscribe. It is an excellent value ! Also the developer adds new content monthly. In the next patch later this month, PANDAS will be a playable race . I highly recommend this game for any tactical RPG fan or someone who is looking for a nice MMORPG with 200 levels!!! Posted by Shikaeshi at February 5, 2006 01:36 PMThere are replays of Dofus-Arena here: http://forum.dofus-arena.com/topic.php?id=780 You need to install the last version of D-A to play these: I tried Dofus awhile ago, frankly I hated it. I do enjoy a lot of strategy titles but I found this one extremely monotonous. Primarily I played that time-mage class, whatever it's called. I could really only fight anything by using the same tactic every single round, basically time-slow the enemy so they couldn't attack and then use my remaining action points to make a weak attack. The time-mage was an interesting class in concept but they didn't give me enough options that 'tactics' were even remotely involved. Failing to deliver on a very interesting class concept to that extreme made me realize the developers were idiots. Maybe if more options had opened up I would've found the game somewhat interesting, but after about the 50th battle with that same, very time-consuming tactic being required, I decided Dofus was crap. I found no place for any meaningful interaction with other players, and i'm not going to waste my time on crappy gameplay just because the art is "cute". If I recall it cannot be multitasked effectively, so it's not a good way to fill boring chunks of time where you can't be playing a game that's like... good. Better off playing ADOM or some retro game in DOSBox. Posted by Stromko at February 11, 2006 09:04 PMI don't know how old that post is (haven't paid much attention), but who are you in-game? I'd love to go leveling with you sometime! Lemme know. :) Myriad Posted by Myriad at February 13, 2006 12:24 PMThe game does contain much variety. at certain lvls new spells are learnt and thus new strategies evolve. youve also got the choice of different types of classes, long range, close combat, summoner, buff, heal and others are mixtures or change when u lvl up. the game makes use of items a lot too, most good players owning sets which put up different stats according to how many pieces of the set u have. in my opinioin its a great game Posted by MagnaCarta at February 19, 2006 10:49 PMIn response to Stromko's comment on the game, I would have to say you are very wrong in your accusation of this game being crap. Xelor (the time mage character.) is a very hard character to start off with. IF you are not partying with other players, it can get very repetitive and monotonous. I suggest playing as another class, possibly something more aggressive. Posted by Death's Fox at February 22, 2006 04:20 PMKevin is correct. Xelor, Eniripsa, Feca and Enutrof(Time mage, healer, defense mage and treasure hunter respsectively.) are all quite difficult to use if you do not have a higher level character that can buy it equipment and items. Good classes to start out with, in my opinion, would be Cra, Iop or Osamoda (Ranger, Fighter and Summoner.). I've been playing this game for months now, and I am still amazed by it. Every time I feel I've hit the greatest point I can achieve, a higher level character of the same class comes around and shows me that there is still much more to strive for. That just keeps me going. When you have a profession, even the low level items you can craft will be sought after. Various quests make the smallest swords important, which really boosts a new player's faith when they seem to be getting nowhere monetarily. Having good equipment that can be acquired early on definitely hooks one on Dofus rather quickly. Posted by JebinZedalu at March 3, 2006 12:51 PMI've been playing dofus for about a year now and I've figured out that Xelors Enipsa Fecas and Enutrofs really aren't that hard to raise... With a Xelor all you need to do is stick to Intelegence and wait to level dark ray at level 9, Enipsas are a little bit harder but are sorta like Enutrofs you need to raise them with two accounts at once and also the game is designed to give more experience to Enipsas with a group (build intelligence with Enipsas and wait to max Stimulatin Word then Revitalizing Word), then fecas are nice and easy all you have to do is fight "Gobballs" from a distance with your first offensive spell while waiting to max Armor of Earth and then only increase intelligence.. and with Enutrofs you need to raise them with a seperate account at the same time then and level "Fortune" 4 and "Living Bag" to 4 then wait till 17 until you fight by yourself...
ok, out of all the classes u have\n't mkanaged toi mention the other classes such as pandawa(all around) and sram(assasin) i need level ups quik heeeeeeeeelp I LOVE DOFUS SOO MUCH!! im not realy the one to play games etc but a frend of mine got me into it and now i jus cant get enuf it awsome i hope it last forever becuz it jus fantastic i dnt have any bad things cuz evryting is great on it oh maybe the lagn does tend to get annoyn but other then dat it ok ..my character is XXXshadudieXXX on rushu server if anyone wanna challenge lol Posted by tanya at July 20, 2006 08:28 AMDofus rocks my socks man! I've been subscribed to Dofus for a few months now (and been playing for 6 months) and all I can say is "wow!". I love the in-depth gameplay which normally forces players to interact with each other to complete objectives and subbessully traverse dungeons. The battle system is quite diverse as it is possible to fight solo at an early level against a few enemies, but it is more beneficial to build a team and fight as a group to gain more experience. W00T this game rocks i have been playing for awhile and now that the new server is out i moved over its Rosal and im stuck inbetween Osamodas (summoner) Xelor (time-mage) and Sadida (nature mages) the only bad part is all the high lvl characters can be snobs and kill u randomly when ur on THEIR team ect. but other then that this game is the best of the best.
