The 1982 Atari Club Christmas Catalog

The Atari Club Christmas Catalog 1982Can't find an Xbox 360 for the holidays this year? Seventy dollar "special edition" games getting you down? Well let's go back in time to a simpler time in video game history ... back to 1982 when the Atari 2600 ruled supreme!

This 8-page catalog of gaming goodness was bundled inside the September/October 1982 edition of Atari Age Magazine and features some rather odd gift choices. An Atari plastic inflatable kite? An Atari space telescope? An Atari "Super Sports Wallet"? Err ... okay, if you say so.

But check out page four of the catalog which has some "choice" items. A Breakout cap and scarf! The "official" Berzerk T-shirt! An Atari duffel bag! Damn, I wonder if that 1-800 number still works?

Check out the entire catalog after the jump.

I never knew the 2600, but that stuff looks really nerdy. But then again, Spore is probably one of the nerdiest games I've heard of.

I will take the Dust Cover, the Pin, the Giant Bear, the Telescope, and the Instruction Book, Book!

And hell, throw in the Frisbee too!

You know that guy caressing the telescope is imagining that it's a woman.

The Breakout scarf is pretty rad.

Oh My God did this take me back. I used to work in Retail here in Australia (Perth Western Australia) in the early 80s and we sold Atari 2600s and Atari 400/800 computers. I have some treasured memorabilia of the time. I have an original circa 1984 Pacman Bean Bag doll/toy, most of the Activision pseudo Military material stick on badges for ironing onto your T-Shirt etc. They are Wing Comander, Starmaster, Flying Aces, Chopper Commandos, Sider Fighters and Megamaniacs. I still get the 2600 out occasionally just to play Imagics excellent Demon Attack. Still very challenging and addictive. By the way if you like the old T-Shirts check out powerupclothing.com. They have some great Atari T-Shirts

Spoken like someone born after 1980.

Yes, the games were simpler but they forced designers to work harder, look at all the craptastic Batman and Jurassic park licenses to see what it means when developers focus on graphics and forget how to make it fun.

I grew up with Atari and my generation rules the world and produces the games you now play.

I work for Google -- run an Xbox360 on a 50 inch Pioneer Elite plasma with RBH 7.1 surround. My wife plays Bejeweled in 1080 high def. She was an atari gamer.

In 20 years you'll be in a position to rock so don't forget your roots either.

Considering that I have been playing video games since the mid-1970s I can say that I enjoyed playing Adventure just as much as I enjoyed playing The Legend of Zelda. Just take a look at Tetris, perhaps the most popular video game of all time. Tetris could have easily been programmed to play on the 2600 ... does that make it a bad game?

Great gameplay is great gameplay, period. Fancy graphics and amazing sounds definitely enhance the overall gaming experience, but gameplay is everything. And the Atari 2600 had more than its fair share of legendary games.

I still want that Breakout cap and scarf...

Just wait 30 years and see what they say about the games of today.

No way man! I gonna keep rockin forever...forever...forever....

LOLOL I have 2 of those modular cart. holders both full of games in my closet. I had no idea that they were $15 at the time. I was about 7 or so when we got em. Great stuff!

oh yea... and Adventure STILL rocks!

CAn you imagine how much this junk would go for on eBay?? Wow -- super rare!

I still love my Atari it has pride of place amongst a collection of cool designer toys that I've collected and occassionally it gets fired up for some fun. Actually it's not the original...dah! I got it in perfect working condition for £1!

Seriously though Atari and the 2600 is responsible for inspiring many designers today and it did me - check out our gaming clothing at www.joystickjunkies.com/store - we've got Gauntlet, Robotron, Defender, Atari Activision and much more launching soon after Christmas and you'll find all the official Space Invader stuff and a whole lot more. hope you like

Oh, I love the scarf and the hat! I wonder if my gradma would make sth like this... :)

I used to own that whiteboard Hall of Fame. I have no idea what happened to it. I'd love to see what games and scores I wrote on it. I wonder if it's in my "pigeonhole box." You know, the kind of box with useless stuff you just can't part with?

I think the stuff looks exactly as nerdy as my current-day video game paraphenalia. If you update the hairstyles, a lot of this stuff would look more modern. Case in point: the down vest. They're back!
