Gaming Steve Episode 32 - 12.27.2005

Rise of Legends Alim CityIn the last Gaming Steve of 2005 I sit down with the Vice President of Big Huge Games, Tim Train (Civilization, Master of Orion, Alpha Centauri). Big Huge Games made the excellent Rise of Nations and is hard at work on the upcoming RTS Rise of Legends.

In the interview we cover the game's unique setting, issues we both had with Alpha Centauri, how the RTS genre is evolving, playing Magic: The Gathering, how to balance a complex RTS, the very cool Rise of Legends single-player campaign, the why the director's cut of the movie Aliens really stinks. Oh yeah, and I also go over my best games of 2005. Enjoy!

Great show, liked the interview.

Good recap and I agree with you so much about Psychonauts. I can't believe it hasn't sold as it deserves. Every critic seems like love it and still.. So sad. Weird thing is that it's not even out here in Europe yet. Expected release date is Feb 2006 (so that might be one explanation)... I imported it on launch from the US and I hold it as probably my favorite game of 2006. When a game is hard to stop playing, you know it's good. Also, just finished Shadow of the Colossus and "boss" number 13 (Traildrifter) was probably the most beautiful boss fight I have ever done.

I remember in Psychonauts -- the crazy old man asked me if I was ready to leave -- and I said "No." Then he slapped me and said, "How about now?!"

That game is a modern classic.

I was just listening to the top games of 2005, good lineup, I look forward to playing some of these. As a little eccentric side note:

check out at 1:35:53, steve makes the funniest noise I've ever heard him make. It's like a hesitation stutter of some sort, very very funny, I replayed it like 3 times.

My guess for the third race: Atlantis.

Iam not sure if i missed it but how could u not put Mario Kart DS in your "best of 2005"

Posted by Retman at December 30, 2005 08:50 AM

I'd add Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth to your best of 2005 list. Very unique Xbox title, and fun...

I found the disparaging remarks about Alpha Centauri a bit hard to take. I guess an interest in science fiction is needed to be able to absorb elements of the game. But why doesn't everyone have an interest in the future? A much more satisfying genre than silly fantasy.
