EVE Online Starting to Look Intriguing

eve.jpgIn less than 24 hours I have read about half a dozen stories about the MMO EVE Online and I have to say that this game is starting to pique my interest. First, they have a 14-day free trial, which is always a good thing.

Second, there is the amazing story of how a small "corporation" (AKA player guild) spent months infiltrating another corporation all the way up to the highest levels. And once all operatives were in place, the spy corporation assassinated the leader of the target corporation, stole their extremely rare and valuable spaceships, and then completely liquidated the assets of the target corporation which were valued at around $16,500 in real dollars.

Third, they just released their second huge free expansion pack for the game, which is always a good sign -- it's important to see that the developer is continuously updating and improving their game.

And finally, the next expansion will allow you to own and fly some ridiculously large ships. And when I mean ridiculously large I mean like Super Star Destroyer large. That is just too freaking cool (look at the EVE picture carefully and you'll see the Eiffel tower in the bottom left corner for size comparison).

I heard about those stories too. It does look like an awesome game - And I hate MMO's.

That is all great and wonderful until you realize it takes minutes to do simple actions, hours to get anywhere, and months to achieve anything of true signifigance. Factor in the horrendous combat and you have the makings of a horrible MMO that receives far more credit that it deserves, but eh, people seem to love mediocrity and repitition! So to all of you;

Space is big. And I don't mean like huge, I mean like unbelievably huge. You can just not immagine how huge it is. And it's bigger than that.

(Yeah, i'm not very good at quoting books.)

Anyway, it's not a bad game. Just because you don't like it, and you think things take too much time, doesn't mean it's a bad game.

You'd be better off sticking to WoW, since that's a lot more casual gamer friendly.

Well Ive played the game, The nice thing about it is in other games where all you do is GRIND AWAY... you set a skill timer which in fact is your skill trainer, every skill has a set time, and there are other skills which lower skill times over all making them faster... say for if you obtain the skill which allows you lower skill times, level it to level 4/5 which should take 3/4 days all together, you can train other skills afterwards and save a 1.5 to 2 days of overall training time than without the time lowering skill, all within the 14 day trial, that is wat I did, and I even got to one of the intermediate cobat ship levels I own 2 of the class, several low level ships, two level 1 freighters and 2 level 2 freighters, and have a grand total of 5 million ISK which is a considerable amount within a trial time...

The Best thing for EVE is having friends in the game, my first 2 hours of game play I made 600k of ISK while tagging along for a teir 3 mission, which I got to keep alot of the loot. :)

I gave the trial a whirl. It looks great and has one of the best avatar-customization interfaces ever.

But this game is DENSE - I have limited blocks of playtime and didn't manage to get through the tutorial over the course of my 14 days!

Posted by Grumpy Robot at December 18, 2005 7:19 AM

theres no doubt that EVE is a very VERY nice looking game. Great engine. but you cant do much in 14 days in that game.. ..... ..

IF you like games that allows you to read the LOTR books While playing THIS is your game.

IF you dont like fast paced combats / prefer auto combat stuff THIS is your game.

IF you love great graphics and an overall superb engine THIS is your game

I got alot of stuff done while playing EVE;) that other games wouldnt allow me too, and thier engine is stunning:) absolutly super nice. I think its a shame that combat is so boring and and "distant" somehow. but thats just apersonal opinion
(dont know if others share that tought)
EVE was a very relaxing experience for me, though many probaly play the games to create connections and chat with others
(my social fobia makes me a loner in EVE)

the reason I dont pay to play is that I think its too expensive compared to what you get.

EVE is okay. I just wish Earth and Beyond was still around.

Posted by Sordino at December 18, 2005 12:52 PM

EVE isn't really that involving. After a while it becomes more of a screensaver than a game, which makes it hard actively enjoy if you're not into reading books while you play.

Posted by Jecrell at December 18, 2005 1:33 PM

Earth and Beyond was great. This game is super for those people with nothing but time.

Posted by PineappleTheHun at December 18, 2005 5:26 PM

I, too, tried the 4-day trial. The nice things about EVE are the huge universe (5000 systems, 10 planets per sys), the skill interface making grinding obsolete, the absolutely awesome graphics, player corporations capable of building space stations just like the developers, and the way EVE puts all their players on one server, no more asking your friends which world their in.

On the other hand, it costs a fair amount (slightly more than WoW) and after a while, the automatic systems for mining and combat get boring. You fly to your bookmarked asteroid field, lock an asteroid, then activate your lasers and wait for your mining barge to fill. Soul-crushingly boring (unless your using a macro). Combat is also like this, you lock your target, select orbit or approach target, then click your weapons and wait. This means that on average, you must be at your computer for only 1 min out of every five you play. Great for getting stuff done ;)

Posted by Wahh at December 18, 2005 7:05 PM

Ya, this turned out to be a really short trial for me. I played for about 5 days and basically, it went something like this...
-Get delivery
-Hit autopilot
-Play Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
-Give cargo to guy
-Rinse
-Repeat

Then I tried mining
-Choose asteroid
-Hit autopilot
-Lock asteroid
-Hit laser
-Play Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
-Sell ore at space station
-Rinse
-Repeat

There were some interesting parts to the game though. So many different weapons and customizable items were fun but, it'd take months to actually be able to afford them. I think it could have been fun too be a space pirate also but, there's no way Im going to invest 3 months of game time just to get the required levels and money to make that happen.

I can't understand either why the char generation was so hyped. Basically you're customizing a portrait for your avatar that never leaves its ship.

By the way, I've got a group of friends playing EVE right now. Really good people and quite welcoming to new players. Feel free to drop by their forums and say hi. Link below

Well i play eve and its awesome, for those moaning about it being a screensaver, omg try leaving empire, i started on a 3 day trial back before the exodus expansion was even thought of, a grand total of 18 months have passed since then and i'm still gaming away.

TBH you just have no idea what eve is about, you've done simple courior missions and some mining in a barge, thats only a tiny fraction of what this game has to offer, i'm one of those pirates you spoke of and yes it can be rewarding, this game is NOT for the solo gamer hence the MMO part, you need to find a nice large player run corporation to settle down in and start some PvP which is in no way a point and click then walk away affair, you actually have to plan things for PvP and its very fast paced once it actually happens, i suggest you give it another go and actually experience some more of what eve has to offer.

Sounds like Kagan wasn't any good at EVE.

This is a game for intelligent people. If it appears differently to you, have yourself tested. You might have Kagan's problem.

Posted by Wig at January 6, 2006 12:21 PM

A lot of players above have completely missed the point of Eve. Mining, missions etc are really just time fillers to top up your battle funds!

The beauty of Eve is there are no rules! You can literally do what you want whenever yoou want and be anyone you want to be. The politics & players are the game. Until you have been in a corp v corp war with battles of 20 battleships each and a crap load of frigates, cruisers and others in support roles like electronic warfare... well you havent lived :)

Those complaining are complaing about the tutorial basically. I have played for 2.5 years and still havent done 50% of the things I want to do!! :) The 14 day trial is probably not enough to even to learn 10% of the game!

Posted by Seer Taak at January 9, 2006 5:04 PM

The game has a learning curve, so the "learning" part of that is bound to be a real turn-off for CERTAIN people.

Posted by Wig at January 10, 2006 3:02 PM

The thing about eve is the 14 day trial does it no justice... No offense to the people who says it takes long to do anything, Or it turns into a screensaver. Eve online is a game thats more complexe than anyother and by being more complexe compared to other games it seems very simple on the surface.. I have played for 2 1/2 years now and the Pvp and 0.0 are really where the real game is.

Like I said the game is what you make it... if you need help, have a question, or want to verify my validaty My ingame name is (Sin x)

Posted by chadbob at January 17, 2006 4:55 AM

Wel I have read alot of stuff on how slow paced the game is and I do aggree, It is not EQ, COH/V, WOW. I I have only been playing fro 4 days in to my free 14 day trial. I blew thru the tutorial in a couple of hours and completed the training missions in 3 days. I have the top frigate for my race and I am outfitting it. I have the skills to fly it and use what is on the ship ( but still need a few hours to train up some skills to truely use the ship well). If you see Lord of the Rings you think WOW or EQ, If you see spiderman you think COH/V, If you have ever played "Traveler" or seen 2001 a Space Oddessey or the "Black Hole" then think EVE.

Posted by Wolff at January 18, 2006 5:39 PM

Having played Eve for a year, I must say that most of the people who oppose this game fervently probably have attention deficit disorder. If you call this game slow-paced, you've clearly never been involved in an interceptor melee - flying like a bat out of hell at 4km/sec, trying to angle your ship so your turrets can track your target more accurately while messing with the hostile's ability to hit you, all the while trying to maintain your warp scrambler (anti-escape module) is intense.

As for requiring months to attain anything, my corp fought its first war when our characters were about a week and a half old - we won. If you take months to become effective, then it is YOU who are the failure and not the game - all you need to have a good scrap is a tech 1 frigate mob with warp scramblers and stasis webifiers, both of which take only a few short days to train up.

Posted by gluestick at January 27, 2006 12:53 PM

I'd have to agree with many of the comments above, it does have it's boring parts.

I think one of the more entertaining parts of Eve is more conceptual. Many people site the details of game play as the "killers". While combat and mining can be monotonous one of the cooler aspects is that it is a relatively loose environment giving people the freedom to play as they want. Want to frag your friend? No problem as long as you are in unsecured space. Want to joing a corp and help collect money to build an empire with them? Or maybe you want to be a space pirate... or a trader... or even a bounty hunter (hunting other players who have a price on their head) sure, it's all possible. The environment is vast and so are the possibilities in game play. Political intrigue between player factions can be amazing and this adds a lot of atmosphere to the whole experience.

Earth and beyond was ok, but the realism and scale sucked... it wasn't space, it was a "game map" and the back story made little sense and did nothing to immerse you in the game. Eve on the other hand has a deep, potentially realistic timeline.

Posted by Dan Hamilton at May 7, 2006 12:01 AM

EVE is a very involving game and if yoo are a care bear and all you do is missions and mining it can be very boring.
Alas there are cures for the doldroms of EVE its caled PVP (player versus player)
I am part of a large Pirate corp called Dark Side of the Moon (pun intended) and we specialize in PVP, GAnking, ransoming, protection services, and genral Yarrr, and Arr tyoe action in low security space.
So if you think the game is nothing more than a screensaver after afew days, and the combat stinks, STOP MINING STOP FIGHTING NPC RATS AND TALK T A PIRATE

Posted by XiaJia meber of DSotM Corp at June 4, 2006 11:50 AM

Those that complaint about EvE not having enough action or that the game is too automated obviously have not played it for more then a little while.

EvE has the best PvP ive ever seen by the way.

Posted by Joao at June 26, 2006 6:13 AM

EVE is a game for more cerebral, or perhaps more vindictive, or perhaps more capitalistic, or perhaps more altruistic, or... well, it has something for everyone, except a "twitch" factor. If you're looking for the heart-pounding adrenalized rush from nonstop seizure-inducing games like half-life, EVE isn't for you.

On the other hand, if you're interested in a game with one of the most sophisticated economic simulations, the most "at stake" for PvP (you can control entire regions of the game map, defend it, and attack others), and a nearly infinite variety of game play styles, then EVE is worth a look.

Previous posters have commented they haven't gotten very far in 14 day trials. Don't take me wrong, but if you were able to master the game (or even make "significant" strides), why would you invest months of your time at $15/month? The game has a long-term horizon to provide years (yes, years) of growth as a character. The time-based skills are designed to *help* casual gamers, not hinder them; you can train while you're off having a "real" life, instead of grinding to the next "level".

As a new player, and by new I mean anything shy of a year, expect to get "pwned" by the older players if you venture into their turf. Kinda like RL - think you could take out after 2 weeks of basic combat training? No, of course not. But EVE offers lots of content for the beginner, ranging from very thorough tutorials (don't skip them!), to chat channels for help, to guided missions and very safe space.

There are also lots of corporations looking for new players who are happy to share not only their knowledge of the game, but also some of their earnings and "loot" to help a new player get started.

Whether you like PvP or PvE, there's room for everyone in EVE; give it a try, you might find yourself hooked.

I am a novice with the Eve experience, just a few months of
playtime under my belt. I do enjoy the game. I also play
Freelancer (3.5 yr. +). Unfortunatly, the multiplayer server are
suffering a slow death. Only a few servers have 20 +players
gaming on them at one time, even with very talented modders
trying to soup up the game. Thus the reason for my transitioning
to Eve. The only thing I miss is the control I hand over my ships.
It could be my inexperience with Eve but I don't think so. Are
there any former freelancers out there that can give me their
opinion?
Muchas gracias mis amigos

Ok I have been playing eve for about 3 months now. To enjoy the game you need to be smart. If you are a stupid person EVE is NOT for you. The beggining of the game is a bit slow, I was a n00b, had no clue what to do etc. I met a guy in corp recruitment chat and joined up with him. Now we run our own space stations and have our own solar systems. The PVP in eve is the most intense pvp i have ever experianced. No other game EVER gets my heart pounding like in eve. Eve is very very hardcore, if you die, your dead. You loose your ship, and everything in it and on it. Eve online is an amazing game. You need to network, be smart, and act cool. Noob and stupid people are left to be noobs and stupid. The leet make it out into lawless space and make empires. Eve owns wow. I played wow since beta. Eve owns all MMO's currently.

real simple......folks.... you cannot....(REPEAT CANNOT) get anything done in this game on a casual basis. Sure you can spend 3-4 months leveling your character by changing skills, but if you want to play around with that cool tech2 ship then its going to cost you... BIG TIME.

Posted by ceylous at November 20, 2006 6:54 AM

I agree with Redfish, Grumpy Robot and P4p3Rc1iP. I've been playing WOW for since Aprill 2006. I played EVE back in August 2005 and I truly miss playing it. I haven't had the opportunity to play it again which is a pity. Why mention WOW? The two games are in the opposite side of the spectrum. EVE is a great game that doesn't end up ruling your life. Heck I was able to make a sculpture while playing it (of course I got blasted by a pirate twice for going to the bathroom or making coffee while warping). It's a game with a relaxing pace while it still engages your imagination about game lore and the in-game technology. Don't get me wrong like what some of the others here said. This game is DENSE and other games in that respect seem childish in comparison (sorry WOW but i still love you though). Two drawbacks for me: missions and mining = overly repetitious and hours of doing nothing. Great enviroment and graphics, great community especially if you like RPers (like a friend said the 5 hour tutorial alone scares away annoyingly inane people), no levelling grind!, and the multifaceted ships. This is the best PVP game i've played.

...this is the best mmo on the market, hands down, without a doubt. It has the BEST pvp in any mmo by FAR. Obiovusly a person of you feeble mental capacity couldn't handle such a masterpiece.

Posted by Someone with sense at December 18, 2006 1:17 AM

Eve, in all its beauty, has a monstrously steep learning curve. If you are not willing to invest time to overcome this then Eve is probably not for you. Also, if your idea of a great game is to plunge into fullscale action instantly, forget about Eve.

Yes it does take endless mining/mission running/ratting/pvp'g to build up enough of a wallet and yes, the skill trainings can be killing to get thru, especially the learning ones with which each new player should start.

But once you get past that very difficult initial stage the game becomes so much more rewarding with great ships to fly and killer setups to fit.

My tips:
-Join a corp and tag along on missions/ops.
-Set a long skilltraining and leave Eve a while to break any monotony/boredom. You'll soon find yourself wanting to go back ;)
-Don't avoid 0.0..there's a lot of fun and rewards to be had!
-Death is part o/t game, don't let it get to you.
