October 06, 2005Star Control II Lives!
For those of you who have never played the original, or want to rekindle their Star Control love affair, you can now download and play Star Control II on your modern operating system! Back in 2002 the original creators of Star Control II Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III released the source code of the 3DO version as open source under the GPL. Since then, The Ur-Quan Masters (UQM) project aims to port Star Control II to modern operating systems and enhance the gaming experience with updated music and effects. Of the three games released Star Control II is often considered the best and has almost a cult-like following. During the game you will create alien alliances (with 21 truly unique alien races to interact with), go on exciting missions, collect various resources, build a combat fleet, trade captured alien life forms for advanced technology, and, oh yeah, save the universe (no biggie!). The graphics might be dated, but the fantastic writing makes for a deep gaming experience. Available for Windows, MacOS X, and Linux Star Control II might "look" dated but the gameplay holds up extremely well and will quickly suck you in. I just started playing again and I'm having a very hard time pulling myself away from the action. Definitely download this game and give it a try (and check out the walkthrough for a little history and how the controls work). Comments
Is this somewhat similar to the MoO series? Ive been playing MoO3 lately, and its a big dissapointment. Posted by Devilmachine at October 6, 2005 08:08 PMNot really, it's much better than the MOO series. It is a little similar, but this game actually has a plot and storyline for you follow. It's actually a lot closer to GTA than MOO. Definately give it a try. Posted by Gaming Steve at October 6, 2005 08:35 PMSteve, you rock man! What might be of interest is that the HOURS of conversation in this game are all voice acted and totally hilarious, though it still manages to preserve a serious atmosphere when needed. Totally awesome and thumbs up. Possibly the greatest game ever made. End of rant. Posted by FTH at October 7, 2005 05:39 AMI discovered UQM about 5 months ago, it is a great bit of nostalgia from the days when Amiga MODs were awesome and I used to love going stealth with my Ilwrath and then cheap-shotting my friends :) And for the record, MoO3 is like the most boring game ever. If per chance you are using it as a benchmark for the quality of the first two, don't. They are much better. Sadly the Urquan Masters 'technofied' the music and, in my opinion, ruined it. SC2 is still one fo the funniest games I ever played. :) -Lego Posted by legodragonxp at October 7, 2005 01:45 PMActually the new updated version of SC2 has voice-acting for everything now, and you can go back to the original music if you want (you don't HAVE to listen to the new music, that's just an option). Personally I like the new voice acting (the alien voices are great), but you can easily turn it off if you want. Posted by Gaming Steve at October 7, 2005 02:18 PMThe game blows. Posted by Kagan at October 7, 2005 08:53 PMKagan... You Blashphemer! Don't make God throw you into the pits of hell, because, I WILL!! Kind of weird though... dl that 1 mb, then download another several several mb while installing from the 1 mb... why can't you just install the whole game instead of doing it in little peices...? I wasn't really expecting to have to be on the internet to dl it, so I wasn't and someone was on the phone, so I couldn't do it till now which really irked me. Posted by Psilontech at October 8, 2005 09:58 PMThis is one of my favourite series/games of all time, I never even thought to look for it to download, thank you. Heh, I still have star control 2 and star control 3 discs :P Posted by Lord_Oberic at October 9, 2005 02:00 AMSC2 was one of my favorite games of all time -- I must've played it for months. I don't remember SC1 all that much(it was quite different from 2 and 3, if I recall), and SC3 was pretty good(though not nearly as great as SC2). Posted by Derella at October 9, 2005 10:23 AMFirst i thought it stunk, but i was determined to give it a chance, Then i thought it was boring and suddently (about the point where you meet Master Greenish) it switched from boring to Genius:D and ive been playing it since Steve posted this:D. Great game;) are there others in the same genre?, first time ive tried anything like this. Cool stuff! Posted by Red_Fish at October 10, 2005 04:33 AMThere is no new voice acting in UQM. The voices are from the 3DO port of SC2. New to other platforms perhaps, yes. I loved that Gaming Steve compared it to GTA, since I've had the same conclusion earlier too. GTA and SC2 have things in common but we don't see a ton of sequels for SC2 on the horizon. If only SC2 would get good sequels the same speed as GTA does. No need to revamp the engine, just write new content and minor improvements and I'm all set for $pending $ome. Posted by ac at October 11, 2005 07:38 PMNot really worth bragging about since it's not even mentioned in credits, but when the UQM project was just started, I helped out a bit on the project. It involved cleaning up the code, so I've in-directly touched every code file in UQM. I still have the almost original source for the project (barely works in PC). Posted by ac at October 11, 2005 07:47 PMThis game is so cool, thanks for showing it on your site I would have never found out about this great game thx. Posted by newsc2fan at October 11, 2005 11:38 PMI played this series the first time round, they were superb games with a 'huge' feeling to them. I'm a little worried about revisiting them as time is too kind to some games :) Posted by DM2 at October 12, 2005 04:33 AMBy far one of the best and first EPIC galaxy spanning games of the 1990's I've been playing SCII on DOS emulation every year at LAN parties when we want to bring up an oldie. Thanks for pointing out this latest revival, i hope someone picks up on this Cult classic and makes a proper sequel. Posted by Xango at October 18, 2005 09:03 AMi found star control II at a good will i went to and disk three does not work all but that disk loaded but the game still wil not work it frezzes up befor it starts. Posted by krazypluto at October 23, 2005 01:17 AMSo... as far as i can tell without having played it... it's like a space GTA but without the M/Ao rating? Posted by Vivec at October 27, 2005 12:28 AMI'm having some trouble installing the game. I've downloaded the installer, but when I run it and it tries to download again, it just says "Connecting..." and then gives an error, ie. it doesnt connect. I'm on the net via the firewall of my university's intranet. P.S. SC 2 ROCKS!! Posted by Will at October 27, 2005 01:30 PMThe same thing happened with me (the downloading errors) but yet the game managed to work in the end. Give it another try. Posted by Gaming Steve at October 27, 2005 07:40 PMMy favorite game of all time. Playing this for the first time in eight years has been pretty emotional for me. Wish they hadn't changed the hyperspace music, though... anyway, thanks to UQM for bringing this back from the near-dead. Posted by Josh at November 28, 2005 09:52 AMI just finished this game. I have been waiting a long time to play this game. I use to have it for the 3DO but I sold it 5 years ago and I wish I had kept it. Last week I decided to look it up on the net and BAM there it was for download as the urquan masters. I downloaded it and the walktrough. Awesome. Thanks! Posted by MIguel Bazinet at November 28, 2005 06:57 PMThanks to gaming steve, Star Control II is my favorite game of all time. Posted by LoreAlmighty at December 3, 2005 10:03 PMHow about a retro review on Star Flight and/or SC serie/UQM? Posted by ac at February 6, 2006 11:57 AMYou know that SC2 is such a good game when we are all discussing it 12 years after its original release. Most games have a shelf life of 1-2 years before the general public grows tiresome of the concept. Star Control II truly is a spectacular game. Modern games simply don't have that kind of depth, period. You know, I found the overall experince to be somewhat like Pikmin, with you venturing out into the wilderness to accumlate raw goods to increase your manpower. One quibble, though; I wish there was no time limit. I would have loved to visit every single star in the game, exploring every planet, but time simply won't allow it. Posted by ReverendNoahWhateley at May 13, 2006 07:43 PMThough its been said 1000000x above i too love this game... like many ppl here i played this for the first time on my 286 when i was like... 8, though i didn't appreciate it when i first started it after i sort've matured a little and played it properly i loved the game, i wish they made the AI a bit smarter though because i find that a human player can easily destroy the computer even with match ups like the Arilou vs Illwrath (give it a go, its fun). But yes ranks as my favourite game of all time, thanks for bringing it back to the 21st century on my pentium 4 :P Posted by Nauti at October 31, 2006 09:41 AM |
