Total Annihilation "Sequel" Coming Soon

Cover of PCGamerOne of my great joys is when a new gaming magazine arrives in the mail. Most times I find the cover story interesting, but very rarely does the cover actually make me react with a "holly crap, I need to open up this magazine and read this story right this second!" And that is exactly what I said when the latest issue of PC Gamer arrived in the mail yesterday. The cover story is about "Supreme Commander", the "spiritual successor" of Total Annihilation.

For those of you unfamiliar with Total Annihilation, it was a PC Real-Time Strategy Game released in 1997 and is often considered one of the best, if not the very best, RTS ever released (GameSpy named it the best RTS of all time). It was an amazing game that actually required real strategy to win and not just gathering resources faster than your opponent. Plus, there were about two million different types of units in the game (okay, the real number was closer to 250, but that is still an insane number of units), and yet it was still balanced. And to make the game even cooler when it first came out Cavedog (the developer) would release a new unit for the game every single week. Now that was a great game.

Well it appears that the prayers of thousands of RTS fans everywhere has finally been answer by Gas Powered Games. Supreme Commander is being published by THQ and is due out for the PC next year. Definitely check out the latest issue of PC Gamer to view the RTS goodness.

Can I get a Hell Yah! Total Annihilation was the first PC game I bought, got it even before I could play it. I would just sit and look at the box shots wishing I could play it. Damn it, now I want to go play again, and I need to keep focused on Psychonaughts.

Uh oh... Spore... SA... Spore... SA... ARGH! I'm going to be divorced in a year!

Hmmm....doubt it will make the same impact as it's predeccesor. If you read the gamespy article, you will notice it is hailed simply because it had features that other rts games have commonly today before any of them did. So unfortunantly, this game is going to have to try real hard to be as well-recieved as it's daddy.

only one word: wow!

The combination of this and spore in the near(ish) future will have me glued to my pc for many years to come and will cost me at least 2 levels at gcse! :D

wow!

ok, so it was more than one word- but who cares! :D

wow again!

YES!!!!

I like the DS games, but I'm so glad he's returning to TA! A great game! Very well done, enjoyed it a lot and played around with modding and such. C&C had more PR power, but TA was by far the better game looking at the tech and gameplay.

About time! Will be sure to play it!

This has caused me to think. Spore + Supreme Commander. Could this be a sign of things to come. Could it be the revitilization of PC gaming?

Well, for some reason I thought Age of Empires was the only rts in the genre at the same. Well I learned something today.

Someone needs to make a 'good' rts that had the feel of Age of Empire 2 The Conquerors Expansion.

Last rts I bought was Lord of the Rings battle for middle earth, and haven't played much rts lately.

We'll I'll pick this up when its released.

I don't know - I just can't get excited over Yet Another RTS. Dune II I played to the end, but I have never been able to finish another one. I've tried Warcraft, Starcraft, and C&C, but none of them seemed to bring much more to the table than Dune II offered. Prettier pictures, bigger tech trees, sure, but the basics still felt all the same to me.

Battlezone was the closest I could get that still felt new and fresh. What do you suppose this one could possibly bring to a genre that was tired 5 years ago?

can''t believe I found out so late!!!!
Not sure anyone will read this but HURRAAYY!!!! I can't wait to see the commanders again. Jeremy Soule soundtrack I hope.
Noticed the same sound fx's on the site as in TA?
I thought; well, it's Cris Taylor, maybe he's working with the same sfx guy again, pitty he seems to be using the same fx over and over again.

Turns out thats because this is TA again. Sort of.

Well...... I really hope it'll be related to the old TA. Like I hope The Arm and CORE are still in it. maybe even a new faction as well. If they have the same guys(ARM and CORE) i hope the Core still has the Krogoth aswell as all the other units even for the ARM. Also i hope they come out with patches for the game so after i beat it i can use them. like for the first Total Annihilation I got the TAUCP patch. It gave me new maps, and bulidings and units(like 500 for each side):)

Posted by Keil at October 4, 2005 11:58 AM

No. It won't have the Arm or Core. But, 3 new sides. I think that's for the better though. I can't wait. Go to Gamespy for Uber-coverage, they have everything SupCom! Really, I think I'm going to die Q4 next year...

Posted by Flayum at October 4, 2005 6:10 PM

Well that kinda sucks..... But u didnt say if the ARM was still gonna be here. I miss those little peewee dudes cause some 1 stole my TA commander pack (the battle tactics, CORE contingincy and the capaign and skirmish disk). And how do u know that there will be 3 new sides and what are there names?
Also will there be any of the original units or buildings from the Total Annihilation?

Posted by Keil at October 5, 2005 12:01 PM

But i Know They still have to have the commanders. AND will you have the chance to have a huge space battles?

Posted by Keil at October 5, 2005 12:02 PM
