Sony Online Entertainment Future Vision

SOEToday I went to the Games & Mobile Forum where a few interesting little items were revealed to huge audience of 307 people (that was the actual attendance).

John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment, started the conference off with his keynote address and revealed quite a few interesting tidbits.

First the foremost, Smedley revealed that the PS3 will allow online microtransactions (just like the Xbox 360) and these transactions will become more commonplace in the near future.

Smedley then described a future where you could play an online game via your PSP, PS3, PC, and cell phone where you would be able to play the same game utilizing the same character on all platforms. The graphics and experience may be slightly different – for example, you would only be able to perform inventory management of your character on the cell phone version of the game while the PSP, PS3, and PC versions would play the same but have different graphic engines. However, it was important to note that these online games would not be separate games, they would all be the same game, using the same character, across different platforms, where you can play with the same people online. He also said we should expect to see this sort of gameplay within the next six months.

As for selling items within Everquest via Station Exchange, Smedley said that they were still figuring out the exact pricing but expect the Station Exchange to be live in June. He also warned that SOE programmed extensive monitoring tools which will alert SOE if players are excessively camping certain creatures or treasures and may ban these people from EQ.

As for new online chatting interfaces, Smedley explained that they were working on a single text and voice chat interface which would work across all platforms and games (PS3, PC, PSP, Everquest, etc.). So rather than having to leave Everquest to chat with your friends playing an online game on PS3 you could chat across platforms and games within a single interface. No timetable was given for this technology.

All in all it was an interesting keynote to see where SOE is planning on moving in the future.

What a dumb idea, this whole deal with actually setting up a system that accomodates people who want to trade virtual items for real money.
That's just retarded.

But oh well. Let them be idiots. I don't play any of their games anyway.

Geez.

i hope this doesnt turn out so all the rich kids are the ones with the coolest and most powerful items

Gauphastus,

if you don't play their games, then you can't bitch about it. Leave the commenting on these types of things to people who actually play their products.

I, for one, don't care for it as DevilMachine hit the nail on the head.

Posted by Steve2 at April 22, 2005 10:12 AM

I hope that in the end the only thing does not prevail those microtransactions that would do would be to harm to the player with few resources.

in other words the microtransactions stink out

I predict the game economy will be all over the place for the first several months. Prices will be high, gold will be farmed, items will be obtained, method will be exploited. The market will become saturated. Prices will plummet, and playing the game itself will be as worthless and plugging in a quarter to get some cheat codes.

Unless, Sony licences out the ability to trade and sell items online, not just with cash, but with (what some would see silly) agreements and contracts. This sillyness will ruin the game of its fun, while the act of trading will ruin the downright playability.

That's how I see it, at least.

Steve2,

Baha. Okay then, I'll rephrase -- I no longer play any of their games, not because of this little thing, but for the fact that most of their games are crap anyway.
I have played their games, so I can "bitch" about it, though a few sentences on a trivial little comment post hardly constitutes bitching on my part. But whatever.
Besides that, I can bitch about whatever I want. It's super fun.

I was just making a quick comment on it. Heaven forbid anyone should make a short comment about something on a comment board.

Bleh.

I'll say again: this plan Sony has is a stupid idea.

Posted by Gauphastus at April 22, 2005 6:17 PM

guh! just shut up!

Posted by rooster at April 22, 2005 8:27 PM

This would more than likely ruin the economy of their games. Not terribly smart.
We'll have to see how it goes. Hey, the only way to truly know if these things are good or bad ideas is to try them out.

ON a side note, Steve2 and Gauphastuas should take their bantering to the forum or something.
Gauphastuas gave his email there for a reason. Use it.
Besides, you both seem to agree. Who cares?

Steve!

Where is this weeks episode? We expect a new show every seven days!

Posted by IPodder at April 22, 2005 10:18 PM

Well the only thing this really does is shift the balance of power in games from those with time to those with money OR time. Its just a rebalancing of the long domination of one type of player.

SOE SUCKS A LEFT NUT! Their ruining everything, especially SWG. They've killed it.

F*** YOU SOE!

Posted by SOE SUCKS NUTS! at April 24, 2005 5:46 PM

Just look at lineage II. You have companies over seas that camp spawn points 24/7 with a armed detail that warn you about comming in there or they will TK you. I do a good "virtual" buisness in SWG. I see things going south very very fast.

Posted by The Ronin Corperation at April 24, 2005 5:55 PM

pretty much agree with SOE SUCKS NUTS!.... i have wasted 2 years of my life playing SWG , only to find that they are now engaging in a "COMBAT DUMBGRADE" in which they are taking the ultra unique system that SWG was founded on, and doing a copy and past from games such as EQ2 (surprise surprise , also SOE) and WoW.....

have you seen the color icons???? i almost had a seizure after 3 minutes of continuous focus on them in the TC.....

anyway, F YOU SOE! ....

Posted by SWG reject BRANNY at April 24, 2005 10:23 PM

I personally dont have a problem with the new icons, but I do think its a downgrade. The new muffled gun noise...the fighting is even worse then EQ2...Im accualy considering deleting my account, and not letting SOE suck anymore money out of my 1 Grand account.

Posted by Jack at April 27, 2005 4:20 PM

ok then if the soe have created the online game like that then that suck though, really i meant u have to pay real money to get the items for the stupid game when the game is suck though. and oh yeh they are try to copy like the xbox 2 or 360 or nexon somting like that though right well there u go........man. to me i think the ps3 they are offer us two different version on the same system right so then wait and see and try it out though hmmmmmmm. and i will try some online to pay real money ( meaning and depend on how much the items it though if they cost 50 cent to one dollar or more gee i would not even image that though)and let see if it is worth it or not though.

Posted by gamemoney at April 27, 2005 10:01 PM

man this is not even final yet........

As many of us know from experiance (SWG just being the most recent) SOE don't listen to their paying customers. Seriously how can you justify doing a so called "Upgrade" when there are people rioting ingame and in forums saying they don't want it? This is the same concept, just a few less people complaining because less people know about it, okay alot less people complaining. Sometimes I wonder why I bother even complaining about SOE screwing games up, I have to say I've finally learned my lesson. I spent over two years on Everquest and about four months on Star Wars Galaxies. Both to trashed by SOE. Can they not take a hint when that many people quit? Do you realize so many people quit in SWG that the president of SOE actually made a post in the forums?! I mean come on take a hint guys, something is seriously wrong. To end my rant, first of all SOE only listens to the customers that agree with how they do things, not the ones that dis-agree. Second, I'm personally boycotting SOE. They are not getting another penny out of me. I hope others do the same, if SOE won't listen to the voice of the customers, then maybe they'll notice the big dent in their paychecks. *shrug* If you keep paying them, they'll just keep screwing you over.

Thanks for listening,
Catone

HOLY S**T! THIS IS A DUMB IDEA!!! TO BUY VIRTUAL ITEMS FOR REAL $$$ WHO THE HELL WOULD THINK OF AN IDEA LIKE THIS!?!?! juss think of it: the rich kids would get da good items cuz they can aford it while the poor kids can't even buy good items cuz dey hav no $$. All these companies are looking for more $ when they already are overpricing their games. Now they introduce a stupid idea like that. Why couldn't they just keep the old trade an item 4 an item that only specialty versions have (like Pokémon, Megaman Batlle Netowork Series and all of its versions)? That would be so much better cause then other people can just trade for their things (even rare items) instead of paying real cash for it. Its so stupid.

Posted by the dumbest idea at July 23, 2005 10:21 PM

I cant believe this! This is juss 4 you guys out there who think this is a good idea:
1. Lets say u buy alot of things and items/characters (like $50 worth). What happens if your memory card drops and you loose all of the items you had bought. There goes $50 down the drain plus all of your hard work. How would you feel to be out 50 dollars?
2.Lets say the item you wanna buy cost too much but you need it to complete the game. That would suck cuz not only will you need to get the $ to buy it, its essential for the game in order to beat it. If the games were like Pokemon where you could just trade for the essential item for sumthin u dont really need then you could continue the game.

Just think of those concepts ppl who like this gay crapass idea. You'll have to hope that these people running this idea dont think this way and make you end up paying more afta u bought da game juss to finish it. If this happens, then there would be no point in playing a game if you hav 2 pay more to finish it.

This is why they turned our beloved game into another pre-teen shoot'em'up. If I wanted that I'd play Battle Front 2

Posted by Jay at February 7, 2006 9:10 PM

SOE is so money hungry they will try anything if it translates into more dollars. This company has had it's problems with ethics and I don't see that stopping in the near future.

They have ruined StarWars Galaxies in their search for new, younger players and since that hasn't happened, they will look for the next "new" thing that will.

Any company that disrepects its customers and offers the worst customer service in the industry will never get my money.

I wouldn't buy, use, or test anything SOE's develops, produces or things about.

Posted by Sara at February 8, 2006 12:16 AM

I have boycotted SOE since they came out with that second SWG "game enhancment"
They turned something so unique and fun into yet another generic, boring, and broken game.

I HOPE SOE BURNS FOR THEIR LACK OF SUPPORT FOR THE CONSUMER'S WANTS!!!

Posted by Bill at April 25, 2006 12:12 PM

Smed Destroyed SWG for the PS3 so i aint buying it
